Next: What's Been Happening Up: The Autodesk File Previous: Final Words Nanotechnology in Manufacturing Ever since I read K. Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation I'd been interested in nanotechnology and followed the relevant literature while trying to figure out, as is my wont, how to make a buck out of it. As one of the designers of Xanadu and an ardent supporter of the project, Eric became acquainted with Autodesk when we invested in Xanadu in 1988. When Eric saw a demo of HyperChem at a conference, he immediately realised that the fit between Autodesk and Hypercube, Inc., developers of HyperChem, was potentially very good. When Eric and Chris Peterson spoke to me about this opportunity, I finally saw not only an opportunity for Autodesk to establish itself in the scientific modeling market, but also a way to position ourselves to benefit from the advent of nanotechnology, if and when it emerged, for surely one could not design atomically-precise structures without a molecular CAD system, which is precisely what a molecular modeling package is. In early 1989, I prepared this talk about the consequences of nanotechnology to help tilt the balance in favour of the HyperChem deal. The talk was delivered at the Autodesk technology forum on May 10, 1990, before an audience which included Eric Drexler, Chris Peterson, and Neil Ostlund, founder and president of HyperCube, the designer of HyperChem.

by Rudy Rucker and John Walker Introduction (from the User Guide Cellular automata are self-generating computer graphics movies. The most important near-term application of cellular automata will be to commercial computer graphics; in five years you won't be able to watch television for an hour without seeing some kind of CA. Three other key applications of cellular automata will be to simulation of biological systems (artificial life), to simulation of physical phenomena (heat-flow and turbulence), and to the design of massively parallel computers. Most of the programs in the Rudy Rucker Cellular Automata Lab (CelLab) are two-dimensional cellular automata. In these programs the computer screen is divided up into "cells" which are colored rectangles or dots. Each cell is repeatedly "updated" by changing its old color to a new color. The net effect of the individual updates is that you see an ever-evolving sequence of screens. A graphics program of this nature is specifically called a cellular automaton when it is 1) parallel, 2) local, and 3) homogeneous. Parallelism means that the individual cell updates are performed independently of each other. That is, we think of all of the updates being done at once.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity John Walker became interested in botany at an early age, but this was not his only scientific interest: "I began to collect minerals in the year 1746" he later wrote. He entered the University of Edinburgh to prepare for the ministry in the Established (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland. At university he was attracted by the chemistry courses given by Professor William Cullen. With Cullen and other friends at university he made many collecting trips. It was also whilst at university that the young Walker became interested in the museum display of natural history, a collection which was already greatly revered. In he was to become the keeper of the Museum. In Walker wrote his first scientific paper, an account of a medicine well. It was also at about this time that Walker made the acquaintance of Henry Home, Lord Kames, who greatly influenced his early career as a natural historian. From he was minister at Glencorse in Midlothian, and from minister at Moffat. During this period he undertook extensive tours in the Scottish Highlands. Walker's manuscripts cover a wide range of his interests and activities. Of particular note to students of botany are the volumes in which Walker annually noted interesting records, many from Edinburgh and its environs, supplied by Mr Yalden.

Getting Even with Dad (1994) reviewed by John Walker My form of "rating": On the first viewing, I alternated between laughter and being pleasantly wired. (Nothing hyper, mind you, just a pleasant "What's gonna happen next!?" [Let it be noted that I get wired easily.]) On the second viewing, the humor predominated. (I almost became the most dreaded theater companionstarting to laugh *before* the joke!) The primary dilemma: This is one flick where reviewers don't have to give any opinions of their own. For many of you, I can simply list some data, and I'll convince you that this is a flick you'll probably like a lot or probably hate intensely. Datum: It co-stars *Macaulay Culkin*. Datum: It has echoes (not very strong) of the HOME ALONE sagas. There are other similar datums, too, but these two should be enough for now. You might already have heard the story, but here it is. Ray (Ted Danson) has planned the perfect heist: gold coins to be lifted with the aid of two partnersBobby (Saul Rubinek) and Carl (Gailard Sartain). True, their last escapade got them four years in Folsom, but at least Ray used the time wellto learn cake decorating, which he now does for a living in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the flaw in the ointment is that Ray's son Timmy (Culkin) has been dropped on him for a week. Ray's estranged wife died a few years ago, and Timmy has been living with Ray's sister Kitty. Well, she's getting married, and dumps Timmy for a week. Ray and company pull off the heist, and merely have to sit on the coins for a week while their fence gets cash. Regrettably, Timmy is on to them, purloins the coins, and holds them for blackmail: a week with Ray actually acting like a fathertaking him to a ball game, the aquarium, roller coasters, the works.
