Abstract
The education of our future water resources engineers is incomplete without an appreciation of the men and women who created the profession of civil engineering in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This module traces our understanding of open channel flow and the development of the Manning equation. It begins in the time of Aristotle and Archimedes and ends in the late nineteenth century with the publication of Manning's work and equation.
Introduction
When people asked Isaac Newton how he had accomplished so much, he answered, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." If Newton acknowledged his debt to those who preceded him, we - teachers, practitioners and students alike - should recognize our debt to those early civil engineers who paved the way for us.

If the word hydraulics Though both the art and the science of hydraulics treat of such flows, they obviously differ significantly in time and substance. Hydraulic practice necessarily originated as an art, for the principles involved could be formulated only after long experience with science in general and water in particular. However necessary the conduct of the art thus was to the eventual development of the science, it is almost exclusively with the science of hydraulics that the present article will deal. As a matter of fact, the subiect matter of the traditional college course in hydraulics particularly as it was taught in the not-too-recent past provides a framework on which the history of the science can conveniently be based. Such a course usually began with the topic of hydrostatics the characteristics of liquids at rest. Instructors then proceeded to the principle of continuity (the conservation of fluid mass ) and a form of the work-energy principle known as the Bernoulli theorem. In passing, note was taken of means of measuring velocity, pressure, and discharge, including the use of small-scale models to simulate flow conditions in themselves too large to test. These principles were then applied to the study of flow from orifices, over weirs, through closed and open conduits, and past immersed bodies. Simple as such matters now seem when taught, they actually took centuries to understand. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that many such principles were first clarified by men like Isaac Newton whose interests extended far beyond hydraulics itself.

E-Mail info@fpm.de For over 230 years precision mechanical and optical instruments have been manufactured in Freiberg. These instruments have had a decisive influence on the development of equipment for mine surveying and are in use worldwide to this day. Among the most notable of these instruments are the theodolites and levels, whose engineering excellence and dependability served explorers such as Amundsen and Andree so well during their polar expeditions. Engineering achievements like the construction of the 19.5-kilometer-long Simplon Tunnel also owe their success in no small part to the use of theodolites made in Freiberg for the surveying work. The current company, FPM Holding GmbH, continues to build on the successes of the past. We develop and build high-quality surveying instruments of different accuracy classes, especially for use on construction sites. In the process we have become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of levels and construction-site theodolites. In addition to our line of typical surveying instruments, including automatic levels, alignment units, theodolites, laser levels and diverse accessories, we also manufacture measuring instruments for dam construction, special-purpose measuring equipment, sextants and compasses.

List of Spingold Winners
and the History of this Award
The Spingold Master Knockout Teams, first known as the Challenge Knockout Teams, was contested for the Asbury Park Trophy in the early days. The runnerup team in the regularly scheduled portion of the event had the right to challenge the winners to a playoff. This right was never utilized. In 1934, 1936 and 1937, the Masters Teams-of-Four and the Asbury Park Trophy were separate events, providing two sets of winners. In 1938 the event became the Spingold Master Knockout Teams and a part of the Summer NABC. At one time, the Spingold was a double elimination event usually lasting nine or ten sessions. It was scored by International Match Points and was restricted to players with 100 or more Masterpoints. In 1965, the double elimination method was replaced by three qualifying sessions (subsequently reduced to two), followed by single elimination knockout matches. The preliminary qualifying sessions were dropped in 1970. The Spingold Trophy, donated by Mr. Nathan B. Spingold in 1934, and the Vanderbilt Trophy, awarded to the winners of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams at the Spring NABC, are ACBL's most highly prized trophies. Mr. Nathan B. Spingold, born 1886 and died1958, a New York publicist, motion picture executive and patron of the arts, was one of the most influential men in bridge administration from 1937 to 1943.
