Surface Spectroscopy and Thin Film Growth Recent efforts have focused on studies of adsorbates and thin films on metal and oxide surfaces using Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS), Raman and Micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). A new program is underway to grow diamond, diamond-like carbon, nitrides and other thin films on a variety of substrates using energetic laser deposition and ECR microwave techniques. IRRAS studies completed include a high-resolution measurement of the linewidth of CO on a Pt (111) crystal surface as a function of temperature. Linewidths measured were the most narrow reported to date, and are in agreement with recently reported direct lifetime measurements. A low noise, high sensitivity Raman Spectrometer that employs a cooled CCD detector is being used for surface and interface studies of a variety of adsorbate and thin film systems. These include the initial stages of oxide layer growth on iron and aluminum, zinc phosphate films on steel, conversion coatings on metal matrix composites, and diamond films. STM is being used to study surface morphology for a variety of surfaces and for adsorbates on these surfaces. Studies include direct imaging of highly symmetric C

Justice William Henry White (1842-1914)
The Seattle Daily Times on the day of his funeral, April 29, 1914, wrote, “No man in the State of Washington stands higher than does William H. White”. That day nine branches of the King County Superior Court adjourned so that all the judges could salute the man who “more than most” brought law and justice to the wild Northwest. Judge White championed causes he believed would enhance Washington’s future. Of premier importance was his nomination in 1884 to go and convince the US Congress that Seattle should become the Western Terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. His tremendous success was an impetus to finish the Cascade branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In February of 1886, unruly mobs in Seattle rioted and tried to force the Chinese (many had come to build the railroad) on to ships and out of Seattle. Judge White ran to the docks and confronted the police who refused to control the mobs.

To go to the " Table of Contents" immediately, click here Tobacco pushers and their accessories conceal the breadth of tobacco effects , the enormity of the tobacco holocaust, and the long record of documentation. The concealment process is called the " tobacco taboo ." Other pertinent words are "censorship" and "disinformation." This site is one in a series presenting information thus unknown to the public. Here is the text by Henry Ford [1863-1947] of an early exposé (1914) of tobacco dangers. Written shortly after Michigan's 1909 cigarette ban , the book cites facts you don't normally ever find reported, due to the " tobacco taboo The phrase " tobacco taboo " is the term for the pro-tobacco censorship policy—to not report most facts about tobacco. As you will see, information about the tobacco danger was already being circulated in 1914, 50 years before the famous 1964 Surgeon General Report. Be prepared. The book is a compilation of profound and humorous letters from a British expatriate in Holland (Uncle Brian) to his sheltered nephew (Henry), preparing Henry for his impending arrival in the Netherlands. Each letter is written with skill, insight, and a large dose of culture-shock wit.

HENRY WHITE
BY: MORRIS STRONG
mbstrong@hotmail.com
The Renaissance Of Renaissance It seems to be that painting is heading back towards its aesthetic roots, hand in hand with beauty, in face of the new artists that appear to be retaking the path of renaissance and baroque art. This is the case of HENRY WHITE-LUJAN originally from the Colombian Department of Tolima although also proud of being a descendant of lineage of the Department of Antioquia. White's works help illustrate the fact that it is possible to capture and show moments of passion and beauty as well as landscapes with clean and realistic strokes. It could be said that his work is at times saturated with black and other dark colors, but his clean treatment of technique makes it a pictorial irrelevance that if anything, only helps to show both his dedication and that he is selfthaught. These facts set him apart from the academy, thus finding his own style and pictorial language for his works. His beginnings in painting go back to the publicity bonanza of illustrators and drawers, long before the digital era, when they were still absolutely necessary for creating and drawing.

HENRY WHITE EXPERIMENTAL FARM
Located in St. Clair County, the Henry White Farm was bequeathed to the Illinois Department of Agriculture in 1985. The farm serves as an outdoor laboratory for research into sustainable agriculture, a system of farming that emphasizes profitability and natural resource protection. In addition to research plots, the farm's 94 acres contain wetlands, evergreen and deciduous groves, restored prairie and wildlife habitat. The University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service provides leadership and technical support for many research projects. Cropland
Sixty-five of the farm's 94 acres are devoted to the cultivation of crops, mainly corn and soybeans. Farming provides research opportunities and revenue to offset operating expenses. Research spans a variety of topics. Cover crop trials involving rye, hairy vetch and red clover help determine the planting cycle that best helps the land recycle nutrients. Finding optimum application levels that balance environmental concerns and profitability is the goal of herbicide and nitrogen rate reduction studies. Corn and soybean population trials investigate how different planting densities affect yields and profitability. The focus of comparisons between no-till and conservation tillage systems is expanding beyond production and profitability into other areas, including extent of soil compaction. Annual research summaries are available at the Agriculture Department's Bureau of Land and Water esources

Harry and Teddy The Turbulent Friendship of Press Lord henry R. Luce andHis Favorite Reporter, Theodore H. white. New York Random House, 1995.
http://www.english.upenn.edu/~afilreis/50s/luce-white.html
Griffith, Thomas. Harry and Teddy: The Turbulent Friendship of Press Lord Henry R. Luce and His Favorite Reporter, Theodore H. White. New York: Random House, 1995.
by Birgitte Regier Harry and Teddy traces the careers of Luce (1898-1967), Griffith's former boss, and White (1915-1986), his former colleague, concentrating on the relationship between the two unequal men who shared a love of China but were divided in the 1940s by a sharp disagreement about China's future. The book also tells an insider's story what it was like to work for Henry Luce, and presents character and biographic sketches of other Time and Life reporters and editors like John Hersey, T. S. Matthews, and Whittaker Chambers. (The author portrays Chambers as a brilliant, arrogant, paranoid man.) A longtime writer and editor of Time, Life and Fortune magazines who knew the protagonists personally, Griffith bases his narrative on interviews with Luce's and White's family members, friends and business associates, the Time Inc. archives, and the protagonists' personal papers. The list of selected secondary sources is rather short; an index is provided. Unfortunately the author does not supply notes or indicate sources for quotations. Rather than a scholarly work, Harry and Teddy is an entertaining although at times redundant chronicle which furnishes interesting background information.

The White House Theory
By Lisa Todorovich
washingtonpost.com
Friday, June 13, 1997 W oodward's secret source had access to such extensive inside information about the Nixon administration that many concluded Deep Throat must have been one of the president's men. Names including White House counsel John W. Dean III and adviser Leonard Garment have been vetted as possibilities over the years. However, speculation that Deep Throat was a White House source has focused primarily on two men who left the administration without being heavily tarnished by the scandal.
Alexander Haig
Former Nixon chief of staff Alexander Haig is one of the most frequently mentioned suspects in the Deep Throat guessing game. An aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War, Haig served as an aide to Secretary of the Army Cyrus Vance during the Kennedy administration and as a member of the Pentagon staff during the Vietnam War. He joined the Nixon administration as a military aide to Henry Kissinger, then Nixon's national security adviser. Haig took over as White House chief of staff after H.R. Haldeman resigned in April 1973. In his 1992 memoir, "Inner Circles: How America Changed the World," Haig vehemently denies the speculation that he is Woodward's deep background source. The notion of Haig as Deep Throat was made popular in a 1991 account of the Watergate scandal entitled "Silent Coup: The Removal of a President." The book's authors, Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, contended that, while Bob Woodward was a communications officer in the Navy in 1969 and 1970, he had the opportunity to brief then-Brigadier General Haig, a member of the National Security Council.

The White House
This picture shows the White House during the time Mr. Hoover was president. It is located in Washington, D. C. and where many world leaders come to meet with our president. The president's family lives on the second floor. Originally the house was called The President's Palace and then The President's House. After the War of 1812 the house was remodeled and painted white to cover scars from the war. Since then it's been called the White House. Mrs. Hoover made the first inventory, listing all the furnishings of the White House. She also was responsible for restoring the Monroe Room. Mrs. Hoover was an excellent hostess because of her world travels and the Hoovers gave many elegant parties in the White House as was expected of the First Lady and the President.
