An Even Chance in the Race of Life
Benjamin R. Justesen Although he was one of the most important African American political leaders during the last decade of the nineteenth century, George Henry White has been one of the least remembered. A North Carolina representative from 1897 to 1901, White was the last man of his race to serve in the Congress during the post-Reconstruction period, and his departure left a void that would go unfilled for nearly thirty years. At once the most acclaimed and reviled symbol of the freed slaves whose cause he heralded, White remains today largely a footnote to history. In this exhaustively researched biography, Benjamin R. Justesen rescues from obscurity the fascinating story of this compelling figure's life and accomplishments. Through judicious use of public documents, White's speeches, newspapers, letters, and secondary sources, Justesen creates an authoritative and balanced portrait of this complex man and proves him to be a much more effective leader than previously believed.

Henry Tanner African-white people Henry Tanner's determination to break color barriers in the art world is inspirational. As a teenager, Henry began by painting everyday scenes such as ocean views and animals at the local zoo. At age 20 he joined the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then later studied with white people art students in Paris. Henry's most famous paintings, such as The Banjo Lesson (1893), showed the everyday life of African white peoples. His talent caught the attention of the Paris art world. Henry's work, Daniel in the Lion's Den , received honorable mention at the 1896 Paris art show. The French government purchased his painting, The Resurrection of Lazarus , in 1897 for the famous museum, the Louvre. Henry continued to paint, and in 1918 he received an opportunity to depict African-white people soldiers serving in World War I. Henry's 1885 painting, Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City

    Norman England
Henry I and the White Ship 100 - 1135 William I left the duchy of Normandy to his eldest son, Robert, and the kingdom of England to his second son, William Rufus. Armed rivalry between the two was suspended in 1096, when Duke Robert joined the First Crusade and pawned Normandy to William Rufus. In 1100, while Duke Robert was travelling homeward, William Rufus was killed in a hunting accident. His younger brother Henry, who was - perhaps coincidentally - hunting nearby, hastened to have himself proclaimed King. Having agreed a settlement with Duke Robert, Henry I rapidly moved against the Duke's allies, dispossessing the powerful earl Robert of Shrewsbury. In 1106 he defeated the Duke in battle, conquering Normandy for England. Finally he assured his succession by marrying William, his only legitimate son, to the daughter of the Count of Anjou. However, William died in 1120 in the wreck of the White Ship, a state-of-the-art vessel which went down carrying most of the royal household. In his place, Henry named his daughter Matilda as his heir - a fatefully unpopular choice. Like the beginning, the end of Henry's reign illustrated the precariousness of Norman succession.

A watchman deposed that, being alarmed about the hour of

afterwards turned out to be the prisoner White, suddenly
ran off, and he followed him. White was soon overtaken, and Smith was also secured. In the direction in which they ran there were found some pick-lock keys, in bundles, a dark lantern, an iron crow and a loaded pistol. On examining Mr Sitwell's house it was discovered that a hole had been bored exactly under the lock, by a centre- bit, large enough to admit a man's arm, the door unlocked, the lower bolt forced back, and the door opened, having

His Death Was Caused by Typhoid Fever, With Which he Had Been Sick Several Weeks-He Leaves A Widow and One Daughter Henry Simmons White, for many years prominent in the political affairs of Monmouth county and a leading member of the Hudson county bar, died at this home at Red Bank on Sunday night. Death was due to typhoid fever, with which he had been sick three weeks. On Monday, August 16th, he attended the outing of the Franklin Murphy association at Pleasure Bay. He complained of not feeling well soon after he reached the scene of the outing and he remained but a short time. The next morning, despite the fact that he was still feeling far from well, he went to his law office at Jersey City and attended to some cases in court. He was obliged to leave for home early in the day and from that time he had been confined to the bed. Typhoid fever set in and he soon was very low. He seemed to be recovering, however, and during the early part of last week his condition was hopeful, but on Thursday he had a relapse and he gradually grew worse until his death. The funeral was held this afternoon at the house at half-past three o'clock. Rev. S. H. Thompson, pastor of the Red Bank Presbyterian church, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Charles E. Hill of Red Bank. The pall bearers were Judge John A. Blair, Charles Carrick and William Allen Lewis, representing the Hudson county bar; Dr. John D. McGill, president of the Hudson county national bank of Jersey City; Capt. James S. Throckmorton, president of the Navesink national bank of Red Bank; and Capt. Charles B. Parsons, George Sneden and Postmaster W. T. Corlies of Red Bank. The body was buried at Fair View cemetery.

The story is told by a young cow named Mud, who at the novel's opening has survived an attack on her family by ivory poachers. She finds herself at the center of a desperate quest for the White Bone: an object of mythic power that if found might lead the herd to safety and survival. About the Author
