"Wiener was a great mathematician who opened new perspectives onto fields in which activity became intense, as it still is. Although most of his ideas become standard knowledge, his original papers, and especially his books, remain difficult to read". (DSB)"W. wrote a most unusual autobiography. Although it conveys an extremely egocentric view of the world, I find it an agreeable story and not offensive, because it is naturally frank and there is no pose, least of all that of false modesty".

Norbert Wiener (18941964)
(Fri Apr 4 13:55:56 1997) A very carefully brought up young man. His father, Leo Wiener, was a professor of Slavic languages and literature at Harvard, who had pronounced and peculiar views on education, and put them into effect on young Norbert. (Wiener Russell ). After various peregrinations he settled at the math department of MIT, where he did lots of good work on algebra and measures and the foundations of statistical mechanics. In his younger years, he was (by his own account) a barely-ambulatory bundle of neuroses, and insufferable; he improved with age, to the point of being merely vain and arrogant. In all fairness, he had a lot to be arrogant about: in addition to his mathematics, he was one of the founders of cybernetics , and the man who coined the word (from the Greek kubernetes, steersman, whence also ``governor''). He defined it as ``the science of control and communication in the animal and the machine,'' and thought it was basically about information theory and feedback, and how animals and machines manage to

Norbert Wiener, A1909, H1946
Norbert Wiener may be the Tufts alumnus of most enduring fame. He was a world renowned mathematician and founder of the science of cybernetics and made some of the most important contributions to mathematics in the 20th century. Norbert Wiener was born in Columbia, Missouri, November 26, 1894. His father, Leo Wiener, was a Russian who became a self taught philologist of importance, aquiring a chair in Slavic languages at Harvard soon after Norbert's birth. Wiener's mother Bertha was born in Missouri. His brilliant, absentminded and hot-tempered father personally took charge of his son's education, and Wiener did not go to school until attending the high school in Ayer, Massachusetts, near his family's home in the rural town of Harvard, Massachusetts. Tufts When he was 11 the family moved to Medford Hillside, so he could enter Tufts. He enrolled at Tufts in 1906 and graduated in 1909. His major was mathematics, and he had a strong interest in physics and chemistry, and finally biology. At 15 he entered the graduate program in zoology at Harvard. His eyesight and coordination made him a failure at laboratory work. After changing to philosophy he moved closer to mathematics with a doctoral thesis (at Harvard) on mathematical logic, obtained while working with Professor Karl Schmidt at Tufts. Travels In 1913 (at age 18) he moved to Cambridge University where he worked with Bertrand Russell, and then to Göttingen in the same academic year to work with David Hilbert until the onset of World War I. Via Cambridge, London and Columbia he returned to the Harvard Philosophy department. He tried to enlist but was rejected for poor eyesight. After trying out officer training and teaching at the University of Maine he worked for General Electric in Lynn and at Aberdeen Proving Ground. For a few months he was a reporter for the Boston Herald.

Wiener: Ideas
Norbert Wiener, 1894-1964. Mathematician, born in Columbus, Mo. Professor at MIT, 1919-60. Books include Cybernetics The Human Use of Human Beings Ex-Prodigy I Am a Mathematician (1956), and from Webster's New Biographical Dictionary A bureaucracy and a factory are automated machines in Wiener's view. The whole world even the universe could be seen as one big feedback system subject to the relentless advance of entropy, which subverts the exchange of messages that is essential to continued existence (Wiener, 1954). This concept of interdependent communications systems, coupled with Wiener's assertion that a machine that changes its responses based on feedback is a machine that learns, indicates the distinction between media and cybermedia. Since Wiener's time, cybernetics as a discipline experienced a rapid rise (in the 1960s) and a swift decline, but it appears to be on the upswing again because of a broadened perspective. The original foundation of cybernetics was limited to the observation of the states of a system, with the drawback being that the states observed and defined were wholly dependent on an observer who was construed as impartial and having no effect on the observed system. "New" or "second order" cybernetics includes the observer as a participant in and part of the observed system; the focus has shifted from communication and control to interaction (Pask, 1992). Another interesting aspect of the new cybernetics is the application of elements of chaos theory to

Norbert Wiener 's father was Leo Wiener who was a Russian Jew. Because Leo Wiener was such a major influence on his son, we should give some background to his education and career. Leo Wiener attended medical school at the University of Warsaw but was unhappy with the profession so he went to Berlin where he began training as an engineer. This profession seemed only a little more interesting to him than the medical profession, and he emigrated to the United States having first landed in England. We should note that throughout his education Leo was interested in mathematics and, although he never used his mathematical skills in any jobs he held, it was a deep amateur interest to him all through his life. Arriving in New Orleans in 1880, Leo tried his hand at various jobs in factories and farms before becoming a school teacher in Kansas City. He progressed from being a language teacher in schools to becoming Professor of Modern Languages at the University of Missouri. While there he met and married Bertha Kahn, who was the daughter of a department store owner. Bertha, from a German Jewish family, was [6]:- ... a small woman, healthy, vigorous and vivacious.
