ASC News Guidelines for Executive Committees Resources for International Preservation Resources for Foreign Microfilming Projects Items of Interest The Area Studies Council (ASC) was formed in 1992 to serve as an advisory panel to the Planning Committee of the Center for Research Libraries.
The Council has two main functions. First, it serves to foster communication and the exchange of information among the different projects, between the projects and the governance structure of CRL, and between the projects and outside organizations.
Second, the Council serves as an advisory body to CRL in areas where their subject expertise is appropriate and their experience in cooperative ventures is pertinent. This might include questions as to how CRL's program fits into other initiatives nationwide, or it might entail reexamining the usefulness or importance of particular categories of material collected.
The Council is composed of the Chairs of the six Area Studies Microform Projects, who serve as ex officio members. Permanent guest representatives from affiliated organizations may be invited. The Chair of the Council is a permanent appointment from the CRL's Board of Directors. The Area Studies Program Officer at CRL is the staff liaison to the Council.

Useful Addresses
A programme for Scandinavian Area Studies (SAS) intended for exchange students or visiting students at the University of Bergen will be offered in the academic year 2002/2003. The courses are designed specially for these groups of students, and instruction as well as required reading material will be in English. Each course represents a work load of one half semester, allowing students to choose two different subject areas per semester. Each course within the Scandinavian Area Studies Programme represents 5 Norwegian "vekttall" which equals 15 ECTS credits. This means that two courses SAS equal 30 ECTS credits, which is a full semester workload. Please note that not all the courses are offered both semesters.
