With five federally funded National Resources Centers, the University of Chicago offers comprehensive programs in most of the non-Western regions of the world. The five area studies centers add considerable resources to the University by providing funding for graduate student fellowships, Library acquisitions, and faculty projects. The area studies centers also enrich the academic life of the University by holding conferences, sponsoring speakers, and bringing in visiting faculty members. Area Studies Information Asian Studies European Studies Latin American Studies Middle East Studies ... Russian Studies The Fulbright Institute administers five interdisciplinary area studies programs. Combined majors are offered in European Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle East Studies, and Russian Studies. Such majors involve combining the area emphasis with a major in another appropriate discipline in Fulbright College. Minors are offered in Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and Middle East Studies. Students wishing to prepare for academic, business, professional or government careers related to one of these world regions may combine an area studies field with another discipline such as Anthropology, Art, Communications, Economics, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Journalism, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, and Scociology. Advice on appropriate combinations of courses with other majors and individual approval of such combinations may be obtained from the appropriate program director. All course work necessary for any minimum required language competency may be used to fulfill college core requirements. Asian Studies Students may obtain a minor in Asian Studies by completing 18 hours of specified courses in Anthropology, Geography, History, World Literature, Political Science, and Chinese or Japanese language. Students are also required to complete the Asian Studies colloquium which is offered annually.
