Language and Linguistics
What is linguistics?
Does it just mean speaking lots of languages? No. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The web document The Field of Linguistics , published by the Linguistic Society of America, provides a brief and up-to-date overview of the different facets of the field. A wider range of information is provided by the Linguist List , which is also the major discussion facility for linguists in the world.
What sorts of jobs do linguists get?
Their understanding of how languages work qualifies linguists for a variety of tasks, including language teaching, speech therapy, computational linguistics, linguistic research, and more. The Linguist List Jobs Index provides a searchable list of recently advertised jobs. Another list, OHayoSensei , provides lists of teaching jobs in Japan.
What's the program like?
At Queen's, Language and Linguistics is a Special Field Concentration which leads to an Honours BA. It includes 14 courses in four modules, plus 5 electives. Click here for details.
