Nelly is a former colleague of mine. She is a quiet, industrious person and no doubt a devoted Christian. Every day she would bring her lunch to eat in the office and spend her lunch time reading a Christian devotional magazine. We were assigned to different work teams and did not know each other very well. However, during a casual conversation one day when we walked together after work, Nelly told me about her magazine. She gave me a back issue of the magazine to read, even though I was not a Christian. Soon after, I was transferred to my current department and never had contact with Nelly again. But I continue to read the devotional guide. I think it is a wonderful channel for Christians from all around the world to share their witness and, more importantly, to support and encourage one another.

    Introduction
Gay and lesbian studies is the examination, analysis and interpretation of the phenomenon characterized by romantic and affectional preference by individuals for others of the same sex. It is by nature cross-disciplinary, covering a wide range of intellectual bases: literature, history, religion, psychology, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, medicine, law, fine arts, and others. Despite the presence of large numbers of homosexuals in New York City and other urban centers in the United States and throughout the world, their history has often been neglected or marginalized, a testimony to the inhibiting factors of legal restrictions on certain forms of sexual conduct, the lack of organization among gay men and lesbians, and the unwillingness of the larger society to recognize the value and merit of different forms of erotic and affectional expression. These difficulties notwithstanding, certain individuals in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Western societies, such as Karl Ulrichs and Magnus Hirschfeld in Germany and Edward Carpenter and John Addington Symonds in Britain, began to conceive of themselves as belonging to a discrete group possessing a distinct identity; that this insight was revolutionary is underscored by the fact that no name existed for this body of people who shared similar sexual longings and desires. The term "uranian" was considered, but it failed to find favor and was replaced by words such as "homosexual" and "homophile," arbitrary constructions which, though workable, have been deemed too clinical in some quarters. By the late twentieth century "gay" and "lesbian" had become the recognized terms in scholarly and popular use.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Program at UCLA is an interdisciplinary program that supports teaching and research on the historical and contemporary experience of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people. It provides an academic home for those who wish to study the intellectual and cultural traditions that have shaped our current understanding of sexuality and gender, as well as for those who wish to challenge such traditions and generate new theoretical paradigms. The program sponsors courses, offers an undergraduate minor, organizes lecture series, facilitates the study of minority sexualities and genders in the broadest interdisciplinary context, and tries to bring together interested students, faculty, and members of the larger Los Angeles community. Program Scope
The Human Sexuality Studies Program, inaugurated in 1981 and now serving over 3,000 students annually, provides knowledge about the processes and variations in sexual functions and reproduction; intimate relationships; sexual and gender role development and behavior; and the psychological, social, cultural, historical and ethical contexts of human sexuality. Faculty are drawn primarily from the Colleges of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Health and Human Services, Humanities, and Science and Engineering. In addition to the two undergraduate minors and the MA degree, the program offers several clusters of related upper-division courses in General Education. Both minors consist of a minimum of 24 units of undergraduate study. With proper advising it is possible to use these courses to fulfill some undergraduate major, minor, and General Education requirements. The Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Studies minor meets several course requirements for the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Perspectives GE Segment III cluster. Written declaration of the pursuit of either minor is not necessary prior to enrollment in courses you intend to use toward either minor.

Welcome to the most complete Internet Resource on gay and bisexual male suicide problems, related issues, and a little known concept related to youth suicide. The evidence indicates that homosexually oriented males account for more than half of male youth suicide problems, but mainstream suicidologists generally continue to ignore this aspect of the problem. Information about lesbian youth suicide problems is included, as is other generally unrecognized factors possibly associated with youth suicide problems. It is hoped that your exploration of the site lead to positive outcomes for the ongoing victims of the traditional Better be Dead Than Gay social ideology. Unfortunately, many professionals have had a history of abusing, harming and/or ignoring these young individuals

This new edition identifies and classifies over 4500 monographs and serials in the University of Chicago Library collections that deal primarily with gay and lesbian themes, or some 1700 entries more than the 1998 edition. This 60% increase in citations in four years reflects the vigor of research and publication that continues to characterize gay and lesbian studies. Sexuality is a very extensive subject, of which sexual orientation and homosexuality are only parts. Much of the most important literature on homosexuality is included in works that are part of this more general literature of sexuality, which this Guide does not seek to describe. Hence the reader will not find herein foundation works of sexology by Sigmund Freud, Havelock Ellis, Iwan Bloch, August Forel or Bronislaw Malinkowski, nor major works of the history of sex and sexuality by authors such as Foucault, Gay, or Jacquart and Thomasset. For guidance to this extensive and important literature, readers are referred to Studies in Human Sexuality: A Selected Guide
