New York Times , December 28, 1997, pp. 1 and 11.) T he minor reflects current critical, theoretical, and methodological developments in several disciplines that focus on lesbian, gay, and bisexual, and transgender issues. Studies in this area are by nature interdisciplinary. The program encourages new cross-disciplinary research in the field for students interested in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. The curriculum addresses such topics as sexual identity and orientation; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender perspectives on the arts; gender, sexuality, and nationality; sexualities and ethnic identities. A minor is a set of courses focused on a single discipline or an interdisciplinary thematic area. There can be no substitution for the courses listed as constituting a minor without approval of the governing department or committee. There is no limit on the number of minors a student can declare. Students must declare the minor(s) before their final degree check before graduation, by completing a petition with the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Student Affairs Office, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Student Affairs Office, or the College of Engineering Student Affairs Office depending on their major. Prior approval by the department or committee offering the minor is required. The minor is noted on the transcript at the time the degree is conferred. For more information about University minors, contact your advisor.

Duke University INTRODUCTION Gay/lesbian/bisexual studies is an emerging, rapidly-growing field of scholarship. The sources listed below offer an entry into this area of inquiry. The list is selective rather than comprehensive, and it covers those sources that focus primarily or even exclusively on various aspects of gay/lesbian/bisexual studies. However, because gay/lesbian/bisexual studies is an interdisciplinary area of research, material relevant to it can be found in a wide range of reference sources which do not have a gay/lesbian/bisexual studies focus. Note that many of the sources referred to herein use the term homosexual interchangeably with gay , which usually refers to men, and lesbian , which usually refers to women. Need Translation? - Click Here for Altavista Translator Welcome to the European Internet Resource on gay and bisexual male suicide problems and related issues. The evidence indicates that homosexually oriented males account for more than half of male youth suicide problems in North America, but mainstream suicidologists have generally ignored this. A similar situation apparently exists in other countries, including the United Kingdom and some (all?) European countries, with some variations to be expected given the socially constructed nature of GLB problems. In addition to the above, the high risk status of other adolescent males must be considered under the concept of "The Homosexuality Factor in Youth Suicide Problems" (Tremblay, 1995). Many other male adolescents are harassed and/or abused in schools and elsewhere (includes being threatened or hurt) because they are presumed to be homosexual. These males are not only "at risk" for suicide problems, but their relative risk increases for the more serious suicide behaviors. The result of a New Zealand study (Longitudinal Sample) is publsihed in the American Journal of Psychiatry, 160(3): 541–546 (March, 2003): "Sexual Orientation and Self-Harm in Men and Women" by Keren Skegg, Shyamala Nada-Raja, Nigel Dickson, Charlotte Paul, and Sheila Williams. Lifetime suicide attempt incidences for young adult males: Heterosexual (6%), Minor Homosexuality (16%), Significant Homosexuality (25%). For females: Heterosexual (9%), Minor Homosexuality (11%), Significant Homosexuality (33%). Link to abstract (Must Locate) at

An important note about health studies of the GLBT community
See also: Researching GLBT Health with PubMed Health studies rarely ask about sexual or gender orientation. Unfortunately, the few that have been interested in sexual orientation have often had serious methodological flaws.

For example, most of the early studies comparing the alcohol and tobacco use of heterosexuals and sexual minorities recruited gay and lesbian participants in bars. Not surprisingly, they found high levels of smoking and drinking among these particular people. Based on these studies, researchers concluded that gay and lesbian people smoke and drink more than the population as a whole. This may or may not be true, but certainly it cannot be proven by studies that recruit subjects in such biased ways. Truly representative studies on the health of the GLBT community are rare and needed. Problems with studying the GLBT community include the following: Defining the population.

Fact Sheets
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Issues
(Taken from the SIECUS Report, Volume 29, Number 4 - April/May 2001) During adolescence, young people form their sexual identity. This SIECUS Fact Sheet reviews research on sexual orientation during adolescence and presents the available statistics on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students. Many of the studies are regional or local. Much of the research focuses on samples of LGBT youth that are disproportionately at risk. Sexual Self-Concept, Orientation, and Identity
  • Sexual self-concept is an individual’s evaluation of his or her sexual feelings and actions
  • Developing a sexual self-concept is a key developmental task of adolescence
  • During adolescence, young people tend to experience their first adult erotic feelings, experiment with sexual behaviors, and develop a strong sense of their own gender identity and sexual orientation
  • Gender identification includes understanding that a person is male or female as well as understanding the roles, values, duties, and responsibilities of being a man or a woman
Sexual Orientation during Adolescence These statistics are from a report written by the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington that describes several other studies:
  • In Seattle, of 8,406 respondents in the ninth to twelfth grades, 4.5 percent of respondents described themselves as gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB). Ninety-one percent described themselves as heterosexual. Another four percent indicated that they were “not sure” of their orientations.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Sexuality and Related Issues
Sexual orientation is an essential human quality. Individuals have the right to accept, acknowledge, and live in accordance with their sexual orientation, be they gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or heterosexual. The legal system should guarantee the civil rights and protection of all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Prejudice and discrimination based on sexual orientation is unconscionable. This annotated bibliography presents a cross section of available resources on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender sexuality and related issues. Readers are encouraged to seek out additional resources in bookstores and libraries and by contacting the organizations listed at the end of this bibliography. While the books listed in this bibliography are not sold or distributed by SIECUS, they are available for use at the Mary S. Calderone Library. For those interested in purchasing any of the resources, the date, price (not including shipping and handling), ISBN (when assigned), and distributor is listed at the end of each annotation. More detailed ordering information is at the end of this bibliography. SIECUS sells and distributes only its own materials. This bibliography was compiled by Amy Levine, M.A., SIECUS librarian; Megan Anderson, SIECUS intern; and Darlene Torres, library assistant.
