Introduction to Australian Rules Football
What is Australian Rules Football ?
Australian Rules Football (also "Aussie Rules" or "footy") is a physical contact sport. It is a form of football with roots traceable from early forms of Rugby and Gaelic football, but it is uniquely Australian. Its rules were codified in 1858, and probably predate all other modern forms of football, such as American, Canadian, Rugby Union and League, Association (Soccer) and Gaelic football. Today it is a multi-million dollar business, with a National Competition and numerous smaller leagues. Interest in the game is generally at an all time high within Australia, yet despite this, some parts of Australia are still lukewarm in support of their team in the AFL, and the game has yet to take a firm hold overseas.

Where is Aussie Rules played ?

What is the Australian Football League ?
The Australian Football League or AFL is the national league for Australian Rules Football in Australia. It consists of 16 clubs that compete in a regular competition. The AFL is also used sometimes to denote the AFL Commission.

How did the AFL start ?
Eight clubs formed the Victorian Football League on 2 Oct 1896. These clubs (Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda) formed the basis of the league, with further teams joining in later years. By 1925 Victoria boasted a 12 team competition widely acknowledged as the strongest state league in Australia. Known as the VFL it remained in this format until 1982, when the South Melbourne Football Club relocated to Sydney,NSW. A new era of expansion came as more teams were admitted, however, these teams were from other states than Victoria. The VFL changed its name in 1990 to become the Australian Football League (AFL).

Why did the VFL admit interstate teams and expand ?

Wildcats
The Wildcats were founded in 1990, as you can see on the history page , and since then have grown from strength to strength to become the largest club in the UK, with not just one team but three. The Wildcats are the club's 'first' team and play in the BARFL London Premiership. The rules of the premiership league mean that only nine players on the field can be Australian, the other nine must be EU's (European Union). The Wildcats are very fortunate to have some of the league's best EU players, which in this league can make all the difference.

home Australian Rules Football Australian and Global sites Australian football started as a variation on the various football games as played in the English Public (private) schools during the 1850s. The person who did the most to establish Australian football was Tom W. Wills. Melbourne born, he was sent to England at age 14 where he attended Rugby School in the Midlands. The game was initially planned to be simpler than the complicated Rugby game, and of less "vigour and roughness" of Rugby and the other school games. Only 3 of the 10 original rules were taken from Rugby ...from the Early History of Australian Football
The sport is now played in many countries. The IAFC was formed in 1995 to bring together the people, organisations, clubs and leagues who play or are involved with Australian Football internationally. A full list of controlling organisations and teams can be found on the International Australian Football Council site. The Blues became the 7th team to join the United States Australian FootballAssociation, now the United States Australian Football League.
http://www.bluesfooty.com/history.html
History Through a mutual acquaintance, Sam Ingram and Dave Nicholls met up in early 1997. As the two discussed their past over a few beers, they inevitably found out they were both born and bred in Melbourne, one week apart and barracked for Carlton and Collingwood. After discussing what they missed about Australia, the two decided it would be a great idea to form a footy team - and so the St Louis Blues were born. The Blues became the 7th team to join the United States Australian Football Association, now the United States Australian Football League. As the two began to work on the details, they encountered many difficulties not faced in Australia. The first problem was the ground. A football oval is twice the size of an American football field and open space is not easy to find in St. Louis. Eventually, a ground was located that could accommodate a game. The next problem was players. Americans typically had no clue what footy was. But the two were determined, so the word was spread as they endeavored to grow the club. The first training was at McNair Park with five blokes, two Aussies and three Americans. After a sustained recruiting effort where "every man and his dog" was asked to play, the club finally garnered enough players to field a team. In June, 1997, the club held its first official game against Kansas City, winning a thriller by four points.
