Footy in Seattle
(last updated March 2002)
Initially, the Seattle Football Club was formed on Grand Final Day 1998 (September) after a discussion between a few Australian’s that lived in Seattle and wanted to bring the excitement of Australian Rules Football to the Pacific Northwest. Over the following three months the club recruited heavily resulting in over 40 people on our member list. On December 13, 1998, after a short introduction for the uninitiated, the first game with 7 players per side was played on a shortened field. After the Christmas break a social gathering was held where an official committee was elected and the Seattle Jets was decided upon as our team name. A second game was played in late February with 8 new players deciding to pull on the boots. In mid March we changed our name to the "Geelong Football Club of Seattle" upon gaining sponsorship from the associated professional club located in Australia. A few weeks later 13 players made the trip down to Santa Cruz for the Anzac tournament to play our first games against other clubs. After winning our first two games and surprising a lot of people with our skill level, we were beaten by a slim margin in the championship game by last years National runner-ups; all in all a great performance for our first outing. After a short rest period we began training for the National Championships to be held in October in Cincinnatti, Ohio. With 22 players and 2 coaching staff making the 2000 mile journey, we fared well against class competition. We missed out on a finals berth by one game after losing to the eventual winners, Boston, ending the tournament with 3 wins and 1 loss, good enough for third in the country.

Page 3 Australian Rules Football takes hold in Western Pennsylvania Sunday, May 12, 2002 By Lori Shontz, Post-Gazette Sports Writer When Mel Eperthener told his college buddies he was going to spend a semester abroad in Australia, they couldn't stop laughing. They would sit around and watch ESPN until all hours of the morning to catch the latest re-broadcast of Australian Rules Football from the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Grounds and tease, "That's where you're going? Where all those maniacs are playing that game?" Justin Valley has the ball knocked away from him by Scott Magee at a Wallabies practice. (Peter Diana, Post-Gazette photos) Well, of course it was. It was a no-brainer. Tired of winter weather and afraid his German skills weren't good enough to fulfill the requirements of an international studies major at Allegheny College (a semester studying at a foreign university), Eperthener found the warmest possible English-speaking place. Brisbane, Australia.

A Brief History Of Australian Football
The origin of this distinctive game is not clear, though a game vaguely resembling football was played in Melbourne as early as the 1840's. One theory is that it originated from an Aboriginal game, whilst others believe it may have been modelled on Gaelic Football. Historians such as Geoffrey Blainey have disputed the latter theory on the grounds that there is evidence that the Australian game predates the Irish one. Blainey believes that Australian Rules Football was a colonial Australian invention which blended Soccer and Rugby and added some nuances of its own. Whatever its origins, Australian Football has evolved dramatically during the course of its history and is still seeing innovations introduced on a regular basis. During the 1850's a few football teams formed in Victoria , originally to keep cricketers fit during the off season. The

Wednesday, 07/31/02 Australian rules football team sees success in Nashville By CHIP CIRILLO Staff Writer Australia's favorite sport is establishing a foothold on in Music City, thanks to the Nashville Kangaroos. The Kangaroos play Australian rules football, a sport the Aussies have been in love with for about 150 years. Those were the days when gold was discovered Down Under, doubling the country's population. Nashville is 7-0 heading into Saturday's match at fourth-ranked Kansas City, and the Kangaroos are ranked No. 2 in the 36-team U.S. Australian Rules Football League. The team, which has been around for five years, has turned Elmington Park in front of West End Middle School into its ''footy'' grounds. It's become sort of a home away from home for Australians who have moved to Nashville. ''In Nashville it's becoming huge,'' Kangaroos President Shane Clohesy said. ''Nowadays a bad day for us is about 200 people in the bleachers here in Elmington. A good day would be 500 to 600 and it's growing

In 1996, Australian Rules Football marked its 100th anniversary, a milestone befitting this most unique game originating in the city of Melbourne and its surrounding country towns. Featuring fast play-on action, with a high level of hand control and kicking skills, and of course perhaps the most spectacular marking (i.e., catching) of any ball sports, it has quickly become the national game in Australia, and is spreading to neighboring countries in the Pacific (and most recently, London, England). Ultimate AFL (Australian Football League) provides an excellent entry point into related news, history and imagery. One of the oldest teams in this league, the Geelong Football Club boasts arguably the best player who has ever played the game Gary Ablett (shown taking a "mark" at left). League activity commences in the southern autumn, sometime toward the end of March.
