What is Autocross? Getting Started DSM Autocross Tech Required Reading ... Autocross Links What is Autocross? Autocross is a motorsport that consists of individual timed runs through a course laid out (using traffic cones) on a concrete or asphalt surface. The object is to drive through the course as fast as possible without missing any gates or hitting any cones. While autocross events typically involve lower speeds than other motorsports (60 - 70MPH) the number of driver inputs per second is comparable to Formula One. Much like drag racing, autocross has a low cost of entry. Most sanctioning bodies only require a car in good mechanical shape, and an approved helmet. There is usually a class for every car manufactured, so that cars of like type compete against each other. The largest autocross sanctioning body is the SCCA . The SCCA holds the largest amateur autocross event in the world (The National Championship in Topeka, KS every fall) and also sanctions a professional series called ProSolo In SCCA-speak, "autocross" is known as

http://www.motorsportireland.com/html/autocross.html
There are two types of Autocross events; those held on a grass surface and those that take place on a loose surface; e.g. dirt tracks or quarries. In either case, a circuit is laid out and cars compete individually "against the clock". If the circuit is long enough cars may be started at intervals so that more than one car is on the track at any one time. However, as the event is "against the clock", no passing is allowed. A competitor will usually get four to six attempts to set his or her best time and the result is decided: by the total time taken in loose surface events, or by the best time for any one run for grass surface events. TYPE OF VEHICLES: In grass events there are generally two types of cars catered for i.e. specials and saloons. These are further sub-divided into classes by reference to the engine size of the car. Almost anything goes in the way of car preparation although, you may only use one engine! Also, the regulations handicap cars that have a turbo charged engine or four wheel drive. Loose surface events are generally contested by Rally Cars of one type or another and the same freedom to modify the car exists as in grass events. There is a National Championship for grass events and this takes place from April to September each year.

FL STATE AUTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
SEE OUR RESULTS FROM THIS YEAR'S BAY BOTTOM CRAWL Without a doubt, autocrossing is one of the most fun driving events a driver can have in a car! Here is one of the few events where a driver's ability is more important than the car's ability. For those of you who do not know what autocrossing is, imagine a large obstacle course where drivers are challenged to maneuver their cars around cones in an abandoned parking lot or airport runway. Speeds can reach 100 mph and 5 mph, all on the same course. And to really mix it up, each cone that you hit is a 2-second penalty. What all this means is a lot of turning, a lot of braking and a lot of cones, and all while keeping your Stang from spinning. The real test in autocrossing is NOT how fast your car can go, but how smooth you are. There is a lot more to autocrossing that just putting the hammer down and getting through your gears. Here, you have to think about accelerating, braking, downshifting, turning-in, tracking-out, upshifting, holding on and avoiding cones! One thing is for sure, you will definitely come away a much better driver every time you autocross. For you road racers and drag racers, autocrossing can greatly improve your times For those of you who are experienced autocrossers and have yet to experience the Bay Bottom Crawl , you are missing one of the greatest events we participate in all year. Held on an abandoned road on a deserted island off Sugarloaf Key, Bay Bottom is an extremely high speed autocross with a lake on one side and the intra-coastal waterway on the other side. In other words, of you go off course, you go into the water WITH YOU CAR!!! For more information on this GREAT event, click

NASA-Virginia's Mid-Atlantic Autocross Championship (MAAC) 2002 Schedule:
- Nov. 17: MAAC #3, VMP Autocross, or Solo II racing to our friends in the Sports Car Club of America , is the ultimate entry level sports car competition. Set up in parking lots or on airstrips with orange cones, the courses are made to test both driver and vehicle one-at-a-time against the clock. Different car classes and categories keep competition close between similar machines. Speeds don't even reach triple digits, but the challenge is great and the thrills are unique! There is simply no better way to learn to race in your street car, or show others how to race in your race car! Currently, NASA-Virginia uses the SCCA Solo II classing system of stock, street touring, street prepared, prepared and modified classes. In addition, we offer a Super Street Modified class, which is a catch all class for modified two-seaters and sedans/coupes that do not meet the SM rules. We also have a pay-out class, ProKhana, which is an entry-limited heat where the top cars (determined by PAX index) receive cash rewards. For questions or comments about the upcoming season

Autocross is a great way to exercise your driving skills in a safe environment. For anyone that would like assistance, there will be instructors available to work with you. Each autocross has a different and unique course design and will, hopefully, provide you with a fun driving experience. All PCA members are welcome to attend the autocrosses. You may want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a lawn chair and something to eat. If you’d rather buy food at the event, you can chip in some money and place orders for submarine sandwiches.
