On November 5th, the voters of Oklahoma overwhelming approved State Question 687 to outlaw cockfighting, with 56.2 percent voting "yes" and 43.8 percent voting "no." By approving this measure, Oklahoma becomes the 48th state in the nation to ban cockfighting. Also in that election, voters handily rejected State Question 698, a measure referred to the ballot by the Legislature that would have nearly doubled the number of signatures needed to qualify any animal welfare initiative for the ballot. The vote was 46 percent favoring SQ 698 and 54 percent rejecting it. In all, it was a double-barreled win for animal advocates in Oklahoma on election day. The Oklahoma Coalition Against Cockfighting wishes to thank the people of Oklahoma for adopting the statewide law to rid our state of this form of animal cruelty. They exhibited good judgment and humane sensibility in outlawing cockfighting and maintain the current initiative qualification standards. It was indeed an embarrassment to Oklahoma to be known as one of the last bastions of these cruel gladiatorial spectacles. Special thanks go to Governor Frank Keating, who spoke out in the strongest terms in favor SQ 687 and against SQ 698. Breeding birds for aggressive traits, training them to fight, strapping knives or ice-pick-like gaffs to their legs, and placing them in a pit to fight to injury or death is the very definition of animal cruelty. If it is wrong to fight dogs for amusement, it is also wrong to fight roosters. Do they really strap knives or gaffs to their legs? Yes. The fight is defined by the style of weapon strapped to the combatants' legs, such as a "short-knife" fight, a "long-knife" fight, or a "gaff fight." Cockfighters shave down or cut off the natural spur on the birds' legs and then strap on the knives before the fight. Why are the knives and gaffs used? They enhance the bloodletting, making the fight more entertaining for people who get a kick out of seeing animals hack one another to death. What's more, the weapons make the fights end more quickly; many cockfighting fans would be bored if the fights went on for hours. This also allows pit owners to benefit from greater numbers of roosters entered in cockfight events, which often last three days. I should have expected the "cockfight" would amount to a quick display of two cheerfully bored roosters who could have auditioned for a wholesome children's show. "Genuine cockfights are illegal in Mexico," chastened self-appointed cognoscenti . I should have known that a real cockfight was as likely to take place at the Camino Real as a greased pig contest would be at the Ritz-Carlton. I wanted the blood and gore that nature thrusts upon ordinary surroundings, feeding that perverse fascination many of us derive from encounters with a gruesome car accident that demands impolite staring. The clandestine excitement of the forbidden beckoned. Two decades later, I watched my neighbor Roberto as he handfed chopped fruit, vegetables, and meat to some big chickens he proudly introduced to me as "fighting cocks." Caged separately in spacious pens, these exuberantly plumed and healthy birds didn't look like any roosters I had ever seen, but I took Roberto's word for what they were. Only weeks later did it become apparent why these roosters looked out of the ordinary - their combs and wattles were missing. Sure enough, these really were fighting cocks, and I found myself invited to Sunday's peleas de gallos (cockfights).

The Senate Conservation Committee voted 5-4 against the legislation after hearing nearly three hours of testimony from both sides. "This is an example of the Legislature continuing to ignore the will of the people of New Mexico," said Danielle Bays of Animal Protection Voters. "We will continue to bring this bill before this body until the citizens of this state are heard and respected." Supporters of the bill could introduce a similar measure in the House, but the Senate committee's action makes it unlikely the legislation would succeed during the current session. Louisiana is the only other state where cockfighting is legal. Most proponents of keeping cockfighting legal in New Mexico contend it's part of the state's Hispanic culture and that it provides much-needed income for families in rural areas.

"The senator doesn’t want to tell the people of Louisiana what to do," Allard’s spokesman Sean Conway told the New Orleans Times-Picayune , "but you’ve got breeders shipping roosters all over (the country), not just to Louisiana, and law enforcement people are having a heck of a time cracking down." Of course numerous animal rights groups have endorsed the proposed new law. What has surprised me is the level of support for cockfighting among otherwise level headed animal welfare advocates. A completely unscientific poll conducted on my this site asked people, "Should cockfighting be banned?" Of the 396 people who responded, 131 agreed that it should be banned while 265 said no, cockfighting should not be banned. In discussing this result, it quickly became apparent that the support of cockfighting was actually a rather rigid opposition to animal rights groups. The argument seems to be that if animal rights groups support it, it must be a bad idea. Giving any ground to the animal rights movement or conceding that cockfighting might be abusive would be giving PETA and other groups a victory that can be ill-afforded, according to proponents of this view.
