THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
WASHINGTON With a fight-to-the-death determination reflective of their controversial pastime, Utah breeders of game fowl say they are not inclined to abandon their hobby in the face of a new federal crackdown on cockfighting.
In May, a provision in the new federal farm bill will make interstate transportation or export of roosters used for cockfighting illegal. The measure closes a loophole in the 1976 Animal Welfare Act that allowed gamecock breeders to ship their birds to states or countries where chicken fighting is legal. Cockfighting has been illegal in Utah since 1888. New Mexico and Louisiana are the only states where it is legal to pit roosters against each other in mortal combat for entertainment or wagering.
After Congress convenes Tuesday, some Western senators plan to introduce legislation that increases the punishment to a felony for transporting or exporting animals for fighting.

Rant
One of the great advantages of working for a major metropolitan newspaper is that you get to read reams of bad writing. Conspiracy theorists, angry taxpayers, survivalist End-of-The-Civilized-World diatribes; it's just like the Internet, only we get ink on our hands. I was sitting around mulling the state of the world with my pal, Clark Kent, ( "What's up with the cape, dude? Doesn't the cloth make a noise like a flag snapping in a gale wind when you fly? That would drive me nuts." ) when this little rant ejected from the fax machine: "The State of California should legalize animal Cockfighting. The reason should be that the California State Athletic Commission is legalizing Human Cockfighting in sixty to ninety days. Governor Gray Davis Bill Lockyear, has approved this and Consumer Affairs. If human Cockfighting is allowed, then so shouls animal Cockfighting be allowed. Here we have a State where a seatbelt is required if you drive a care and helmet if you ride a bicycle or motorcycle but if two human beings go into a cage and pound each others heads in and tax revenue can be obtained then this is legal. More BLOODMONEY for the State of California. The State could also tax animal Cockfights in the same manner. They could tax the trainers, the referees; also the cutmen for the Cocks. This will also bring great tax money or BLOODMONEY for Governor Gray Davis and Consumer Affairs.Write your congressman to get this approved. It should go through because Human Cockfighting is going to be allowed."

From The Phoenix New Times, Oct 8-14, 1998: ...Working the crowd is Citizens Against Cockfighting campaign manager Jamie Massey, who's worked for nine years to outlaw the sport in Arizona. Massey says he's been to one cockfight in his life. "The crowd was terrifying," he says. "Just the absolute glee and the expression on their faces when a bird scored a hit. That's what I despise about cockfighting: the mentality it represents. My idea of nice competition is a game of Scrabble. I don't understand people who like to gamble on a fight to the death, and I don't think they should be allowed to do it." "Cockfighting brings out the worst side of human nature, the barbaric side." And my subsequent response, printed in the October 22 issue. As the #1 ranked Scrabble player in Arizona, I feel forced to respond to Jamie Massey's flip comments [NT 10/8/98, p31] dismissing Scrabble as a genteel alternative to cockfighting. At least on this end, there is no vicarious avian schadenfreude. The emotional and intellectual blood spilt on the board is ours, and it's real baby. A steel blade in the head would seem like an old friend compared to the horror of a naked Q pasted to your rack while your opponent inflicts death by a thousand cuts. Inquirer News Service SURE, there are many cockfighting groups promoting the authentic Filipino sport of sabong , but the National Cockers Association council is a breed apart: Big Dome owner Jorge "Nene" Araneta, three-time Rizal Gov. Ito Ynares, back-to-back Cocker of the Year Narciso "Jun" Santiago, respected lawyer and former PBA Commissioner Rudy Salud, Pampanga's pride Jun Jingco, engineer Pacifico Berin, reigning Cocker of the Year Gerry Fevidal, Rep. Claude Bautista, Louie Cua and Philip Chiongbian of the famous Chiongbian clan.
And its record will speak for itself.
Through the years, the pioneer organization has not only been hosting quality derbies at the world-class Araneta Coliseum, but has been setting aside a substantial share of its earnings from cockfighting events held at the Big Dome to help the less fortunate members of the community,
including the funding of scholarships grants to deserving students. For this year alone, the NCA has sent six scholars to Miriam Academy for Computer Science and three others to the University of the Philippines-Los Baños.

Inquirer News Service
ON June 18, 20 and 22, the second and final leg of the annual World Slasher 8-Cock Derby returns with a big bang, bigger and better than ever since it was launched in 1969 at the landmark Araneta Coliseum.
Billed as the "Olympics of Cockfighting," a widely accepted term which I coined with the backing of my former editor, the late Louie Beltran, a true-blue " sabungero " himself, this year’s grand event will feature an international field of respected cocker-breeders. They will come from the United States, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Guam and Hawaii.
Confirmed entries are American Roger Roberts, a 62-year-old electrical engineer from Atlanta, Georgia, who won the first leg last together with the formidable tandem of Filipino Tony Trebol and Rioichi Saito of Japan; many-time US Cocker of the Year Dan Gray of Louisiana, veteran campaigner Ray Alexander of Alabama, Chuck Berty of Oklahoma, Tom Cooper and Jeff Hudspeth of Cedar-Creek, Oregon’s Brad Padgett and Bobby Jones.
On the other hand, the Philippines will be bannered by former world champions dapper Jorge "Nene" Araneta, two time Cocker of the Year, Jun Santiago of the awesome Thunderbird Firefly Group, Pampanga’s popular Jun and Rudy Jingco, Rep. Rudy Albano of Mulawin fame, Danding Cojuangco, Peping Ricafort of PTK Yucatan, hotelier Biboy Enriquez of Bullrun Firebird, Mario Villamor, a past COTY winner; longtime partners Peping Cojuangco and Esting Teopaco of Cat Stingers and Eddie and Bomboy Araneta of Liza Galore.

Agents from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Department, along with personnel from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the NYPD, executed a search warrant on Saturday, January 18, at a cockfighting location in the Bronx. The raid resulted in the arrest of 137 people, the seizure of $40,000 in cash, 38 fighting roosters and a Dodge van used to transport spectators to the location. The execution of the warrant at 3400 Park Avenue, followed a 9-month investigation conducted by HLE and included the use of surveillance and undercover personnel. Twenty-eight of the suspects arrested were involved in running the operation and were charged with prohibition of animal fighting, a felony under the Agriculture and Markets Law and promoting gambling and criminal facilitation. The 109 spectators were charged with misdemeanor counts of animal fighting and issued summonses for future court dates. Seven of the spectators had outstanding criminal court warrants and were taken into custody by the NYPD’s Bronx Warrant Squad.

this strange archipelago Cockfighting:
the ritual
spilling of blood
Cockfights are not just for entertainment, and serve a ceremonial purpose also. Usually, only three rounds may be carried out for the purposes of ritually spilling blood, an important appeasement of the demons that accompanies Hindu temple festivals. In addition, when it has been determined that certain grounds are unclean and in need of some sort of purification, cockfights are regularly held at ceremonies both in temples and in family house compounds. The ritual does not accompany every Balinese temple festival or religious ceremony, however, but only when a purification ceremony is required. The blood is an offering to the hungry forces of evil, the butas and kalas. The Balinese call cockfights tabuh rah - the spilling of blood. At the appointed hour, a white-clad pemangku, a lay priest, advances to the center of the arena and presents offerings on the ground to the butas and kalas, chanting over them, ringing his bell (in Balinese called bajra), and finally pouring rice wine on the ground. Then he makes similar offerings to the gods in a shrine built up on the ground at a corner of the arena. Blood is on the way, although the actual fighting is still yet to come.

Brimley Supports Cockfighting
PHOENIX (AP)-Wilford Brimley thinks banning cockfighting isn't the right thing to do. The grandfatherly actor and oatmeal pithchman attended a weekend rally in Phoenix to voice opposition to Proposition 201, an Arizona cockfighting ban expected to pass Tuesday. Passage could lead to more laws restricting use of animals, like prohibiting the use of dogs for hunting, Brimley said. "My saddle horses are my friends," said Brimley, 64. "My dogs are my friends. Once an idea like this gets started, I don't know where it's going to end." Brimley's concern was unfounded, said Kim Hicks of the Arizona Humane Society. "This isn't about anything except cockfighting," Mrs. Hicks said. "We have no intention of telling Mr. Brimley what he can or can't do with his dog." Cockfighting is legal in Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Louisiana. Missouri voters will also consider a ban Tuesday. Brimley, who lives in Utah, says he visits Arizona to attend cockfights. Return to Wilford Brimley World

Activists ask Congress to put an end to, well, er, cockfighting Pushing to end cockfighting , animal rights activists want Congress to close a loophole in a federal law that allows fighting roosters to be transported from state to state. ``Animal fighting is a bloody spectacle and has no place in a civilized society,'' Wayne Pacelle, senior vice president of the Humane Society of the United States, said Tuesday. ``It's important the Congress take a public stand against these practices.'' Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., a veterinarian, is introducing legislation at the request of the Humane Society that would close a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act that allows birds to be shipped across state lines if cockfighting is legal in the state receiving the animals. New Mexico, Louisiana and Oklahoma are the only states where cockfighting is still legal. Missouri and Arizona voters banned the practice this past November. The Humane Society said cockfighting still takes place, however, in many states where it is banned.

COCKFIGHTING in Indonesia

If cocks have been keeping you awake ever since you arrived in Indonesia, this is your chance to see them killing each other. In the past, the gambling connected with cockfighting frequently brought economic ruin to many families, a man addicted to the habit sometimes wagering a whole month's income on the outcome of a match. Cock-crazy rajas in the early part of this century lost whole fortunes, palaces, and even wives by playing the cocks. Because of the gambling, the Dutch forbade the sport (in 1926). They found it equally as difficult to suppress them as the provincial government does today. Given the fact that 90% of Indonesians are Muslim, a religion which prohibits gambling, it's no wonder that the central government in Jakarta banned public cockfights on Bali in 1981 to prevent moral decay and the squandering of valuable cash resources. Though unofficial, unauthorized cockfights (tajen) are illegal, fighting is still allowed at religious events (tabuh rah). In essence, the cocks are sacrifices to the devil. Hungry evil spirits (bhuta and kala) are especially fond of the blood of fighting cocks because their temperaments are similar. The Balinese the blood offering satisfies the spirits and assures a good harvest. In these purification rites, called tabuh rah (pouring blood), cockfights are not only allowed, they're required. The fights usually coincide with temple ceremonies, and the village council must alert the police. Three to five rounds are allowed in which betting is legal; all other rounds and bets are illegal. If you're lucky enough to see a match at a temple, it may last for three days.

75. Anti-Cockfighting Bill
Anticockfighting Bill Introduced in Congress. Oklahoma State RepresentativeCharles Gray has introduced legislation to ban cockfighting specifically.
http://www.awionline.org/farm/cockfigh.htm
Anti-Cockfighting Bill Introduced in Congress Colorado Senator Wayne Allard and Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson have introduced legislation to eliminate a loophole in the federal Animal Welfare Act which allows fighting birds to be shipped from states where cockfighting is illegal to states where the cruel "sport" is still allowed, Only three states permit this inhumane, bloody activity: New Mexico, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
Currently, law enforcement officers have a difficult time cracking down on illegal cockfights in the 47 states where it is banned. When confronted, cockfighters merely claim that the fighting birds in their possession are destined for shipment to a legal cockfighting state. Prosecution of these unscrupulous cockfighters would be facilitated if the Allard bill (S. 345) and the Peterson bill (H.R. 1275) become law. Cockfighting is a centuries-old bloodsport in which two or more specially hired roosters are forced into a pit to fight surrounded by gambling onlookers. Often, one or both birds die as a result of the fight because their feet are fitted with razor sharp steel knives. The birds may end up with punctured wings, broken bones and pierced eyes. Even the battle's "winner" may ultimately die from injuries sustained in the fight. And birds that survive but are deemed unfit to fight again are either killed by their owner or simply thrown in a garbage can to suffer and die.

New Street Inns and Cockfighting Twelve large inns catered for the trade in the Cornmarket in olden times, and four of them were in New Street. They were the Greyhound (later called the Old Greyhound), the New Greyhound, the Swan, and the Pheasant. The Old Greyhound was the prinicpal place of departure for Carrier carts. No less than nine carts left the Greyhound for outlying places on Saturday afternoons, around 4 o'clock. It must have been a very busy place, for there were carriers at the other inns too. As with other inns around, there was great storage space, and stabling for a large number of horses. In the early 19th century the trade was so brisk that the New Greyhound was opened almost next door. The Swan, now called The Swan with Two Nicks, dates as an inn from 1764. The building however, dates at least from 1551, when an Edward Elcox, a clothier, had a lease of it. In 1780, it was known as the Little Swan, and in 1826, we know there was stabling for 40 horses. In 1865, the veterans of the Battle of Waterloo held a 50 years anniversay of the great battle at the inn. The Pheasant, now called The Old Pheasant, was a somewhat superior inn, for it had a bowling green at the back which was reserved for members of the Corporation. It was made in 1787, and gave the name to Bowling Green Walk. There was at that time little or no building outside the Walls, in Blockhouse Fields. The Pheasant also, with the Star and Garter in Foregate Street, was the principal inn for cock fighting, with ample accommodation for spectators, and it is said, for 80 horses.

Cockfighting and Dogfighting - Workshop on Blood "Sports" The scenes and sounds on the dogfighting video are disturbing and shocking: dogs tearing each other's flesh, and blood splattering across the pen in which they are fighting. A dog collapses from wounds and exhaustion while his owner urges him to "get up and fight." The cockfighting video is equally disturbing, showing cocks with razor sharp spurs attached to their legs, cutting each other to shreds in a bloody fight within a small pen. These are videos that you would rather not see and would like to forget, but if you are working in the field of law enforcement, you don't have that luxury. Investigating blood sports is your job. "Animal fighting is growing rapidly in this country. One of the indicators is the number of magazines devoted to it. In the 1970s, there were four, now there are fourteen international magazines about animal fighting," said Eric Sakach, presenter from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). He, along with Scott Giacoppo from the Massachusetts SPCA (MSPCA), and Bob Conflitti, Senior Assistant District Attorney at the Orange County District Attorney's office, presented a powerful and disturbing array of information on animal fighting. The HSUS invited NYSHA to co-sponsor the workshops which were held in Rochester and Newburgh in August. Sakach, a recognized expert on animal fighting, spent years as an undercover HSUS investigator for blood sports. He exposed and testified against animal fighting rings around the country.
