Hunting with Ferrets (Ferreting)
The Ferret, a relative of the European Polecat, has a long history of being used for hunting Rabbits. With the Rabbit population increasing rapidly in most parts of the UK, the need for control becomes greater.
Ferreting is an efficient and important service of controlling the rabbit population, which has been enjoyed as a sport for many centuries by people from many diverse backgrounds and age groups. It is sometimes the only method available for Rabbit control, as it can be used in areas such as banks and verges adjacent to footpaths and roads.
The Ferreter spreads purse nets over all the holes of a warren. The net has a ring at either end, through which a draw cord is threaded. The draw cord has a peg attached for pushing into the ground. A Ferret is then entered into the warren. The Ferreter is listening and watching continually while waiting for a rabbit to bolt into a net. Immediately this occurs the Ferreter humanely dispatches the rabbit and resets the net.

Field Sports
by Jo Woodward Ferrets as pets is a relatively new concept and it is only in the last 10 - 20 years that ferrets as house pets has caught on. Ferrets as working companions, however, is a relationship dating back centuries. Ferreting is a field sport, and the differences between field sports and blood sports are myriad. Blood sports involve an animal being transported to an enclosed area with no means of escape, whereas in field sports the animals are hunted in their natural habitat with every chance of escape. Any ferreter will tell you about the rabbits that have slipped through nets or used undiscovered bolt holes. "How the B**!!Y H**L did he get out?" is a question often hissed through clenched teeth. The rabbit is a pest species. The damage done to agriculture alone cost millions of pounds every year. More sad is to see keen gardeners whose hard work is slowly destroyed by rabbits, or young trees planted as part of the new forest schemes stripped bare of bark and succumbing to disease. It should be noted that the law (N.F.W.S: Pests Act 1954, Section 1) requires people to deal with pest species living on their land or be held responsible for the damage perpetrated by the pests. British Rail learned this law the hard way. The question of how to control rabbits has five answers gassing, snaring, shooting, myxomatosis or ferreting.

CountrysportsIreland countrysportsireland.com FERRETS Characteristics Personalities Housing Handling ... Ferreting in Ireland Characteristics Ferrets, also known as 'Fitchet', are mammals belonging to the genus Mustela of the weasel family (Mustelidae). The common (or pet) ferret is a domesticated form of the 'European Polecat', which it resembles in both size and habit. Wild members of its family include mink, badgers, otters and the endangered American Black-Footed Ferret. The main difference between the common ferret and the polecat is in the colour of its fur and eyes; usually yellowish white fur and pinkish red eyes, however some common ferrets do have brown coloured coats. The two main colour groups are greyhound (white or albino) and polecat. There will be colour differences within the polecat category which include silvery-grey to chocolate, cinnamon and champagne shades. The common ferret is also slightly smaller than the polecat, weighing on average about 1kg and with a length of, on average 45-50cm, including its tail, which averages about 12-13cm. Ferrets will gain weight during the autumn for winter and will start loosing weight again during the spring for summer. They have a full winter coat and a lighter summer coat. Distinguishing mask markings or colour may vary from seasons to season.

Tony Andrews is the new Chief Executive of the Scottish Countryside Alliance. He spent over 26 years as a director of the British Council, latterly as Director of the British Council in Germany. His career has also included spells in Russia, Brazil, Oman, Nigeria and Yugoslavia where he worked in different roles, including export promotion, education, democratic and social development, the arts and science and technology. Before joining the British Council he worked briefly as a land agent in Brechin, Angus. He and his wife now live in Angus and, as a proprietor of salmon and sea trout fishing on the South Esk, he has a personal interest in country sports and the welfare of communities supporting them.
With the Wild Mammals (Scotland) Act banning hunting with dogs in its traditional form and, with Land Reform at the top of the political agenda, I asked Tony where the Scottish Countryside Alliance (SCA) stands on some of the most important issues affecting the countryside. Clare Valentine talked to Tony Andrews at the SCA's office in Ingliston.

17. Ferreting In Ireland
Ferrets ferreting In Ireland Irish Field Sports Home Page. The art of ferretingin Ireland is something that is handed down from generation to generation.
http://www.irishfieldsports.com/ferreting.htm
Irish Field Sports Home Page Ferrets - A Brief History T he domesticated ferret now used in Ireland is descended from the European polecat. It has been used as a working animal here for a number of centuries, with its main function historically being the control of pest species such as rats and rabbits. It is thought that the Romans introduced rabbits to Britain, perhaps to supplement their rations. The probability of a domesticated polecat being used to hunt rabbit burrows shortly after that time is highly likely. In North Africa there are records of a ferret like animal being used to hunt rabbits circa 60 BC So the ferret, whilst a newcomer to the British Isles, is a very old working animal. The art of ferreting in Ireland is something that is handed down from generation to generation. Many Irish sportsmen and women owe their introduction to field and country sports to that first ferret that was given to them as a boy or girl. Rabbits - The Main Quarry Rabbits are undoubtedly the main quarry of the Irish ferreter and, indeed, have been for as long as memories go back. During the years between the First and Second World Wars, most country boys owned a ferret or two and supplemented the family income by netting rabbits for the local butcher. Land laws in Ireland were never been as draconian as on the British mainland, so the farmer or estate owner loosing a few rabbits a week to a local lad was not a major issue.
