Urinary incontinence is common in many disease states and is found among women after childbirth and in the elderly. Voluntary control of either the detrusor, the muscle of the bladder wall, or the urethral sphincter is lost, leading to the often embarrassing and unpleasant condition. Increased urination frequency is a common side effect of prostate problems and certain antihypertensives. The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Advisory Board (Bethesda, MD) estimates that 13 million people in the United States suffer from urinary incontinence, resulting in an annual direct cost of several billion dollars. Although many centers are investigating medical solutions to bladder dysfunction, muscle instability, reduced bladder-sphincter coordination, and absent and exaggerated reflexes, current drugs have little effect or undesirable side effects. Recently, however, Nobuyuki Tanaka and colleagues at Kissei Pharmaceuticals in Nagano (Japan) developed a novel assay based on an isolated ferret detrusor to estimate agonistic activity of several ritodrine derivatives (

Do you suspect that one of your employees is milking a supposedly work-related injury for all it's worth? There are many ways to identify possible workers' compensation fraud, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which is prosecuting employees for this transgression in record numbers this year. The NICB, funded by insurers, works with police departments to investigate property-casualty insurance fraud. Consider it a red flag if the injured worker: Reports that the accident occurred in the early morning, especially on a Monday. It may be a sports-related or weekend injury claimed as having happened at work. Says the injury occurred in an area where he or she wouldn't normally be (especially if it's a high-risk area), or if no one witnessed the accident. Is facing financial pressures or anticipates disruption in pay due to an impending strike or looming layoffs. Has a history of short-term employment or lied on the original job application. Changes doctors several times while undergoing treatment for the injury.

THE SIDEBAR column discusses the effect of the Uniform Commercial Code 2B on library professionals. Says that the issue that gets the most attention involves the fact that the proposed code would legitimize the so-called shrink-wrap license. Adds that the code appears to have been written by information producers with no input from consumers or information brokers. Wonders where the concept of mutual assent has gone, when now all terms and conditions must be spelled out and agreed to well in advance of services rendered. Adds that consumer groups want such terms brought to the attention of the consumer, much like the insurance waivers on car rental forms. Explains some of the terms and conditions found on the LEXIS-NEXIS Web pages. Includes one sidebar. Microcomputer Abstracts

"Computers are the scapegoats of the modern age," said systems administrator David Young. "Computers never do bad things to people. But people often do really bad things to computers." Help for those poor, beleaguered boxes is now available. Two new security programs use what science knows about humans' physical and psychological makeup to protect computers from people.

    On Ferreting Out Fraud
We envy universities who have antifraud squads in the sciences. Our university not only slipped badly in past AsiaWeek surveys of Asian universities (mercifully when AsiaWeek folded up, the annual ranking stopped), but has been struggling with shortsighted, stopgap, and ineffective solutions to shore up its merit system in academic appointments, promotions and grant of tenure, and research capabilities. Instead of actively seeking research funding, we make do with smaller and smaller slices of the funding pie. Research outputs end up as "technical reports" which are woefully inadequately peer reviewed. Undergraduate students working on their theses supplant research assistants, an alarming trend because the overwhelming majority of such students are merely passing through on their way to medical schools; they devote only about five months or less on thesis work, at the same time [they] attend to other undergraduate courses. Thus, the technical reports that are turned in and comply with financial support hardly have any chance of getting published in prestigious journals. Gray literature is approaching a critical mass. Some data appear not only insufficient but likewise extrapolated, and thus fraudulent. Worse, there have been instances of undergraduate theses turning up as "publications" of the faculty advisers! Just as outrageous have been occasions when such theses are passed off as professorial chair lectures.

A ferret is an animal famed for finding things. On the Internet, the word is about to mean the same thing.
A company called FerretSoft at http://www.ferretsoft.com/ is giving away some of the best search programs I've seen, all under the Ferret name. Advertisers get space in a display area at the top of each program, so you don't have to pay a cent support them. (Ad-free versions may be available later, but Vironix says it would charge for them.)
NetFerret is the suite of search programs WebFerret, NewsFerret, IRCFerret, EmailFerret and, soon-to-be-added, FileFerret available in separate downloads from the Web site. The Ferret programs currently available run only on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, but Vironix says it is working on versions for the Mac and other systems.
WebFerret will no doubt be the most popular in the suite, because it handles Web-page searching better than any other searcher you can find. It uses the latest multithreading techniques in Windows 95 (and its big brother, NT 4.0) to send search criteria to many search engines at the same time. (Versions for lesser systems may not be able to handle multiple searches in quite the same way.)
