Maybe your hunt doesn't do it quite this way, but this page should give you a general idea of what "proper" means for foxhunting attire and appointments. Perhaps I'll also get around to illustrating some of this stuff sometime. Enjoy a few dozen of the scores of foxhunting cartoons that could be found in "Punch" magazine since the mid 19thC. Important Information!
Anyone interested in the future of foxhunting should check this out. As you may be aware, foxhunting is under serious attack in Great Britain, and its fate there could have worldwide repercussions. There has been a lot of misinformation spread by those who seek to ban it, so here's how to get the real scoop. The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has taken over responsibility from the Home Office for the policy on hunting with dogs. Their website has vital information and links about the current status of the Hunting Bill 2003 as well as the Consultation hearing transcripts and submitted papers. Also, the Open Directory now has a subcategory devoted to the status of the Hunting Bill, which will continue to be updated with all the latest developments. No, foxhunting isn't just an obsolete British tradition, although the sport did originate in Great Britain. But when the colonists came over here to escape the tyrannies of Bad King George, foxhunting was one of the old country traditions they just couldn't do without. It's been going strong on this side of the pond since 1650, when Colonel Robert Brooke brought hounds to Maryland from England. In fact, George Washington (father of our country, the guy on the dollar bill) was an avid foxhunter after he outgrew cutting down cherry trees. It's sort of ironic to think of him wearing a scarlet coat while his soldiers referred to the enemy soldiers as "Redcoats." Speaking of those scarlet coats, did you ever wonder why some people call them pink (or Pinque)? Jim Reeds did, and did some

AMERICAN FOXHUNTING
I NTRODUCTION
Foxhunting is the sport of mounted riders chasing wild quarry with a pack of hounds. It is a union of humans and animals in the beauty of nature's setting. Man is an observer mounted on a horse, the vehicle that allows him to follow and observe the hounds as they hunt the fox. The scenario unwinds before the foxhunters eyes and ears with the sound of the huntsman's hunting horn as hounds give chase. The fox or coyote maneuvers, circles and runs through the country cunningly evading the hounds. The music of hounds in "full cry" is laced with the sound of the horn echoing off the woodlands and hills as they pursue the quarry across plains or through woods, fields, creeks, marshes and over rock walls and fences. A crescendo o f sounds and sights that thrill you beyond imagination play out in front of you and your horse until the fox goes to ground or hounds lose the scent and the hunt is over. One can compare it to a theatrical production with mother nature the conductor and the hounds in full cry, accompanied by the hunting horn, the orchestra. Man is the audience privileged to watch, as hounds and fox or coyote, the actors, unveil the plot with never ever the same act repeated twice. Back to Top HISTORY On one occasion while congress was in session, hounds ran near the capital. Many congressmen ran outside to watch hounds and some jumped on their horses and joined the chase. The earliest established foxhound club was the Montreal Hunt in Canada 1826. In the United States, the Piedmont Foxhounds were established in Virginia in 1840. Both packs continue very successfully to this day.

Someone else observed that foxhunting involved a lot of the attributes of a religion, outwardly at least.
Another fellow suggested that if foxhunting declared itself a religion, it would have tax-exempt status and would get official "hate-crime" protection from anti-hunting harassment.
That's how the idea of a Church of Foxhunting was born; and since all good religions need a set of immutable laws, we have these. Whether they were divinely inspired or not, well... I guess that's a matter of faith, but there's nothing written in stone, here.

Foxhunting on the Web
This is a partial list of websites for hunts and related organizations, consisting mainly of the sites that were around when I eagerly started this page. Now I'm about ready to pass the torch. How many lists of hunt websites does the web need? Maybe just one , if it's easy to find and frequently updated. When I first started this page in 1995 or so, there wasn't much hunting information on the web, and I boldly set out to find and link to it all. As the web grew and more hunt sites appeared, keeping track of them became more difficult. But other more energetic (or not yet burned-out) foxhunting webspinners have taken up the task, with similar pages of their own. Since they're doing such a good job, instead of trying to duplicate their effort, I think I'll just link to them and slow down a little. I may still update this page from time to time, if I see a site I really like or have a personal connection to, but I'm no longer trying to maintain a complete list. Check some of the other sites listed here if this one doesn't have what you're looking for.

Article 8 March 2001 Printer-friendly version On foxhunting by Roger Scruton
New Labour has prepared a bill on hunting consisting of three options, ranging from a ban to self-regulation. The hand of the government can be discerned in the option that prescribes a ban - which will create a totalitarian regime of policing, with powers to enter and search without a warrant, to confiscate animals and equipment, and to place the onus of proof on the accused.
It will ensure that hundreds of thousands of law-abiding people will be turned overnight into criminals. This novel departure in English legal history can be explained - but it cannot be justified. The explanation is simple: bigotry. This bigotry has been fuelled by class prejudice, by historical resentments, by the fanaticism of the 'animal rights' movement, and by a wilful refusal to study the facts. And although the government commissioned its own inquiry into hunting with dogs (1), it seems to have taken no interest in the result. In fact, the commission of inquiry, under Lord Burns, produces no evidence that could conceivably support a ban on hunting, and a great amount of evidence to show that a ban would be oppressive and unjust: a gross act of contempt towards a rooted and traditional way of life on which many people depend not only for their recreation but for the social web which sustains them. The fact is explicitly recognised by the Burns report, which also supports the conclusion that up to 8000 jobs depend directly on hunting.

This is a personal view and may not coincide with the views of organisations which support Foxhunting. Click on the links to see more detail.
Who is Foxman?
I am a pensioner who has foxhunted for over 60 years. My jobs as an engineer for 45 years taught me to respect logical argument rather than emotions.
Why a site on Foxhunting?
The case against foxhunting seems to me to be based on emotion. Therefore, I would like to put before those who bother to visit this site a few of the logical reasons why I support Foxhunting. I am encouraged to do this by the fact that over several years three senior "officers" of the League against Cruel Sports have resigned from this well meaning but misguided organisation after learning a lot about hunting. Eventually, they became convinced that logic supported the case for hunting as preferable to other methods of controlling numbers. I feel, therefore, that all you Surfers deserve to be given the facts. You can then come to a logical view on this contentious subject.
Why I support Foxhunting
Foxhunting's primary purpose is fun . It gives great pleasure to many people from all backgrounds and income levels. It is an important part of the social fabric of many parts of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK). But fun is not its only purpose. Foxhunting also helps control the fox population where required by the owners of property that

SPECIAL REPORTS Working Parents Investor's Centre NI_AD('BottomLeft'); Politics December 03, 2002 Labour rebellion looms as foxhunting Bill is unveiled By Melissa Kite and Valerie Elliott A LONG-awaited Bill to ban foxhunting will be unveiled today amid anger from MPs that it holds out an olive branch to huntsmen. Alun Michael, the Rural Affairs Minister, will publish legislation that bans hunting with hounds in all areas of England and Wales but sets up a tribunal to which local hunts can apply for a licence to continue the bloodsport. They must pass a double test of “utility and cruelty”, proving that there is a need in terms of pest control and that their hunt will be humane. Staghunting and hare coursing will be banned outright. But the Government appears to have bowed to the countryside lobby by deciding to keep the new licensing regime outside the criminal courts and by allowing foxhunting to be policed by a civil tribunal system.

Michael Portillo.Category Regional Europe News and Media 1999......Article for The Scotsman on foxhunting, 27 July 1999. Author Michael Portillo. Sheaimed to convert the election into a referendum on foxhunting.
http://www.michaelportillo.co.uk/archive/articles/Foxhunting.htm
Article for The Scotsman on foxhunting, 27 July 1999 Author: Michael Portillo The answer is that Mr Blair committed his party to abolition on Question Time. Far be it from me as a "wholly out-of-touch-Tory" to question the judgement of a Prime Minister who must have tested the proposition with many focus groups, but I suspect he’s made a miscalculation. If the policy announcement was designed to win Eddisbury, it failed. There was also some hubris in his visit to the constituency, as though the very magnanimity of his fleeting appearance in Cheshire were expected to clinch victory. Opinion polls on foxhunting may not be wholly reliable. It’s clearly a minority interest, and is widely opposed. But some people probably respond to pollsters according to what they think is politically correct. The violence of the hunt saboteurs may even have intimidated some into giving what seems a "safe" answer. In any case, the argument has some distance to run yet, even if the Scottish parliament is able to move faster on abolition than that at Westminster. Crucially, Labour has crossed an important line in wishing to convert disapproving opinion into legislation. Its much-vaunted defence of minorities applies only to groups of which it approves. Labour believes that even if a majority in this country disapproves of gay sex at age 16, legislation must provide freedom for homosexuals. Many Conservatives agree. On the issue of abortion, many Labour and Tory politicians believe women should be free to choose. But when it comes to foxhunting, Labour will end the freedom of the minority to placate the sensitivities of a supposed majority.
