62. Telegraph | News | Blair Faces Revolt Over Registered Foxhunting
George Jones and Charles Clover. Tony Blair was facing open revolt in the Labour Party last night over a compromise proposal to allow foxhunting under certain conditions. Labour MPs described as a fudge the new Hunting Bill which would outlaw hare coursing and stag hunting in England and Wales but would let foxhunting continue if it were given the goahead by an independent registrar. Ratting and rabbiting with dogs would also be allowed.

Hunting
Go to hunts in Scotland info. page HOUNDS
Hounds are bred for stamina not speed, a fox can easily out run any hound but only over a short distance. A pack of hounds is anything up to about 40 hounds. (20 couples in hounds in hunting trems). The hunt will have more hounds than what they take out day to day, but these are kept so that any hounds injured/killed etc... can be rested or replaced by the extra hounds. Usually no feed is given to the hounds the day before the hunt in ordeer to heighten their sensibilities. The average hound's hunting life is about 5 years. An 'old' hound will either be killed off, donated/sold to a mink hunt or maybe used to breed from. It has been known for slaughtered hounds to have been fed back to the rest of the pack.

If there were even 25% more foxes about at lambing time in the College Valley area the problem of lamb losses could be very serious for the local hill farmers whose income is already down to a poverty stricken level. All are in agreement, including the government, that fox populations need to be controlled and managed.
Is foxhunting humane?
Yes, it is the most acceptable and humane way of keeping the fox population in natural balance. There is an increasing amount of hard scientific research to support this (references) . The fox is a wonderful animal and hunting people are the last people to want to see the fox population culled by less humane methods. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons came to the following conclusion on hunting: "As members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons we submit therefore that hunting by hounds is the most natural and humane way of controlling the population of all four quarry species, fox, deer, hare and mink, in the countryside.

SPECIAL REPORTS Working Parents Investor's Centre NI_AD('BottomLeft'); Leading articles May 02, 2001 Leading article The global good How May Day protesters might next year help the poor Soggy weather and a determined, well-rehearsed police operation muted yesterday’s “anti-globalisation” protests in London and other cities. Violence was mostly averted, even if thousands were hugely inconvenienced and the bill ran to millions of pounds. Hardcore anarchists were outnumbered, as they always are in street protests, by young people milling rather aimlessly through the capital. In so far as they had any idea why they were there, most would say they were making an altruistic gesture of defiance, a challenge to wealth and power on behalf of the world’s downtrodden and the health of the planet. “Overthrow capitalism and replace it with something nice” read one banner. Insults were hurled at any of the following targets — banks and big corporations, free markets and free trade, car owners and capitalists, economic growth and, of course, the police. Very few of these protesters could define globalisation, the progressive and still uneven lowering of geographical, financial and technological barriers thanks to faster and cheaper communications and freer trade. They take it to be a new form of exploitation that entrenches privilege, the greed of the already too rich. They would deny indignantly that they are enemies of the poor, not the rich. But that is the sad truth.

But legislators, most from Prime Minister Tony Blair's ruling Labor Party, said they would press for a blanket ban later in the bill's passage through Parliament. "We must support this bill ... tonight because we need a bill to amend," said former Labor minister Tony Banks, who is spearheading the push for a total ban. Rural Affairs Minister Alun Michael strove for support for his plans. He won this time but faces tougher battles ahead. "Some have wrongly suggested that this bill is a compromise pulled out of thin air, others that it is a vindictive attack on a beleaguered minority. It is neither," he told Parliament. UNDER SIEGE The hunting lobby was out in force on the streets of London on Monday. Thousands besieged Parliament, blowing whistles and hunting horns and letting off fireworks.

We are very interested in preserving field sports "I've heard that foxhunting in Ireland is not for the faint of heart. What do you recommend?" Foxhunting in Ireland is pretty hairy! I would recommend you go on our preseason tours, late September, and October, if you want the feel of foxhunting without the "thrills and spills." Our trainers can arrange for us to go "out" with the hunt staff on a private basis. You can watch the young hounds work and see some beautiful countryside. The weather is mild at that time of year too! The other option would be to come on our spring Cross Country training tour where you will learn what to expect out foxhunting (lots of ditches and banks) in a safe, controlled environment. Many people start out that way; then go foxhunting on their next trip.

http://www.lakestay.co.uk/foxy.html
Foxhunting in the Lake District Whatever the ethics or politics of the matter there is a long tradition of foxhunting in the Lakes. But unlike the southern gentry style of hunting the Lakeland packs are not an upper crust social event. The packs hunt on foot and many of the participants are local fell farmers who resent what they see as the depradation of their spring lambs by foxes.
One Wasdale farmer lost 50 lambs and although some losses would have been sickly examples, the farmers are quick to get the fell packs out to trace the scent of any offending foxes.
The most famous huntsman of course being John Peel from Caldbeck. The song D'ye Ken John Peel is almost the Cumbrian national anthem. (Follow this link to a web page featuring the song..complete with MP3 version) Peel was born in 1776 at Caldbeck and typical of the day he was one of 13 children. He eloped to marry his true love at Gretna Green. He became somewhat obsessed with hunting, forming his own pack He became so famous for the number of kills and the success of his pack that 3,000 turned out for his funeral. The song became the adopted anthem of the Border Regiment.

SPECIAL REPORTS Working Parents Investor's Centre NI_AD('BottomLeft'); Thunderer November 07, 2002 Forget foxhunting, what about the halal butchery? by anthony browne I don’t really care for foxhunters. Despite growing up in the countryside surrounded by foxes, I rarely met those who kill them for fun. I don’t believe their spin about its economic importance. I am against cruelty to animals, and all things being equal I would support a ban. But all things are not equal — just the opposite. And it has turned me into a sympathiser for those fighting off hunt-hating Labour MPs, who are waging a campaign in hypocrisy, intellectual fraud and blatant class war. They are so awash in their own dismal multicultural propaganda they don’t even realise what hypocrites they are. That hypocrisy has a name: it is halal butchery, when modern painkilling techniques are not used. And before I am accused of Islamophobia, it has a another name, shechita (or Jewish ritual slaughter).

Foxhunting must stop
Wednesday December 11, 2002 The Guardian
You say in your leader (December 4) that foxhunting should take its proper subordinate position in our public debate. Yet MPs on both sides say they get more letters on this issue than on any other. And I, like many millions of citizens, feel deeply offended that this barbaric cruelty is allowed to continue for as long as it has. I was brought up in the country. I can recall our chickens being killed by a fox. I have no love of foxes and believe they should be culled, but surely they should be killed properly? Chasing an animal for pleasure until it is totally exhausted and then ripping it to shreds is cruel. Hunting continues to offend many millions, because many of us sincerely believe that this barbaric cruelty has no place in a civilised society.
