Campaigners fear jobs will be lost
A series of public hearings on the future of foxhunting have been announced by Rural Affairs minister Alun Michael. The hearings will allow those for and against a ban to put their cases forward and are likely to be held in September. A joint statement from pro and anti-hunting campaigners and the Middle Way Group, which is calling for restrictions rather than a ban, said the hearings would "explore the key issues in a focused way". It added that they would draw on "expert evidence" leading to "legislation based on clear principles". Opinion divided A 15 July deadline has been imposed on those wanting to contribute to the debate. An inquiry into the future of hunting was carried out by Lord Burns two years ago but a Government Bill to outlaw the practice failed when the General Election was called in the spring of 2001. Mr Michael said more consultation was needed at the end of last month.

Georgette Heyer Fox-Hunting Assheson Smith was one of the leading huntsmen of his day - even Napoleon had heard of and admired him. He was obviously a tough customer; literally throwing himself and horse over every fence, and fearing nothing. He was known for cramming his fences, ie pushing the horse at the fence, and was a role model for all the Corinthians and young bucks. Obviously the equivalent of today's fast driver, a menace to all else on the road (or field). The Melton Men were members of the hunts that met at various meets in Leicestershire (roughly the middle of England) which included the Quorn, the Belvoir, the Pytchley.
Although fox hunting has declined, an annual hunt is still held on New Year's Day in Melton Market Place. Three hunts have territories which intersect at Melton Mowbray: Quorn, Cottesmore and Belvoir. The hunting season runs from November to March. The town is hoping to have a complete museum devoted to hunting and its role in the country. Displays are already available for viewing in the Carnegie Museum. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/foxman/index.htm

For the two hundred executives and CEOs of major corporate clients of Equant, attending a week of marketing presentations in Chantilly, Virginia, it was an unusual evening’s entertainment. For the Blue Ridge Hunt, it was an opportunity to explain foxhunting to a worldly group of individuals who knew nothing about the sport. It turned out to be a resounding success for all. Ten, small, well-appointed buses, at intervals of several minute each, turned into the avenue and drove slowly between the manicured boxwoods toward the broad front steps of the estate. Flanking the steps were a pair of riders astride well-groomed hunters and two Masters on foot, all in formal hunting attire. The passengers disembarked and were welcomed and engaged in conversation by the foxhunters. They were offered cocktails and canapes by the catering staff, and after all had arrived, they were escorted through the mansion to the terrace behind, where, across the expanse of rolling lawn, hounds were paraded by the Blue Ridge huntsman. Suddenly a whipper-in “halloaed”; the gone away sounded; huntsman and hounds galloped a large circle; and the quarry was “marked to ground” under a foot bridge where hounds enthusiastically discovered the kibble that had been dropped there earlier.

FOXHUNTING SHEET MUSIC DIGITAL COLLECTION "Foxhunting and music are as inseparable as bread and butter," wrote Alexander Mackay-Smith in The Songs of Foxhunting (1974). ". . . There is something about a day in the saddle behind a pack of foxhounds which impels those enjoying it to gather after the hunt, to eat, to drink, to be merry and to sing." Given the 300-plus year history of foxhunting songs and their importance to the sport, we have posted a sampling of images from our collection of original hunting sheet music. Donated by Warder H. Cadbury in 1998, this collection contains 34 pieces of music, dating from 1798 to 1914 and all published in America. Click on the underlined listing below that you wish to view. The Foxhunting in the UK.
Some months ago I wrote an article about foxhunting in the UK, based on hearsay - mostly from the USENET group talk.politics.animals. Today, the 20.12 1997, after several enjoying e-mails about my wit, and my intelligence (amongst other things), I've done some more researching, and rewritten the article.
In Britain, the foxhunting has been one of the hottest huntingissues for years. Some probably wonder why I, a Norwegian hunter mind. Some probably feel I'd better keep my nose out of other peoples ... well, anyways. This page is dedicated to the Uk foxhunting, and I'll try to give you a description of the hunt and my opinions about it.
The Hunt.
The foxhunting in the UK is by some called a tradition, by others a blood sport. The hunt has for decades been a symbol of wealth and power, an upper class thing. Nowadays, the hunt has become more and more a thing for the average british, and even the number of women is increasing. Hunters dressed in red follow the dog pack over hills and ridges, blowing horns and smacking their whips, the traditional way to control the pack. The hunt usually ends as most hunts - the fox gets away. But sometimes, the fox either gets caught by the dogs and killed, or get dug out of a hole where it has found shelter, and is killed by one of the hunters.
Remember that as I am a Norwegian, I may have failed to mention some of the things that happens in this hunt, however I think this is a correct image of it. Some of my information has also come directly from the "hands of the enemy" (antis), and that's why I'm a bit nervous about publishing this.

James Blitz, political editor. Interviewed on Sky News's Sunday with Adam Boulton programme, Mr Michael was asked whether, ultimately, the government would invoke the Parliament Act. He said What we want to do is have the bill scrutinised and improved, but at the end of the day, if it came to that, we have made it clear, there is a manifesto commitment, that we will enable parliament to reach a conclusion on this.

Introduction
Introduction Paragraph 3 - The Minister in his letter and guidance notes dated 31 May 2002, states that he is looking for information and evidence on the subject of hunting with dogs. This we supply below, formatted according to the paragraphs defined in the guidance notes and also in more detail in the enclosed booklet, A Veterinary Opinion on Hunting with Hounds. The information and evidence we provide is essentially new since although it was submitted originally to the Burns Inquiry and was published on the Inquiry's web site, it has been substantially updated since the Inquiry and much of it is evidence or professional opinion that has not previously been in the public domain. Although the Minister will be aware from my letter of 12 March this year that an earlier version has been on our web site since September 2001 at: www.vets-for-hunting.co.uk

FOXHUNTING....
There are over 200 foxhunts in Britain, each hunting 2 to 4 times a week. The main season is from November until late March, although some carry on until the start of May. All hunts also 'cub hunt' (hunt young fox cubs as training for new hounds) for 2/3 months before the start of the main season. The hunt itself will gather in late morning, although an 'earth stopper' will have been out at dawn to block up any known fox earths, drains and badger setts, so that foxes returning from a night's foraging will be exposed above ground. The huntsman will lead the hounds to a wood or covert where there is a known earth. The hounds are sent into the wood to flush out any foxes. As all underground escape routes are blocked, the fox is forced to run to escape the hounds. Riders positioned around the wood will 'holloa' to let the huntsman know the direction the fox has run. Foxhounds are bred to be slower than foxes, but have far better stamina. Thus, the fox will initially out-pace the hounds, but tire quicker, allowing the hounds to eventually catch up with it. It is almost always an older, experienced hound who will catch a fox on the run, snapping at any part of the fox to slow it down. The rest of the pack then catches up and the fox is torn to pieces. If the fox manages to find refuge in an un-blocked earth, the hunt employ terriermen who will put their terriers down the earth to force the fox into the open to be re-hunted, or attack the fox underground while the men dig down through the soil to catch the terrified animal. Once they have dug out the fox, the terriermen are supposed to shoot it, but many will simply give it a blow with a spade. It is not unheard of (although against fox hunting rules) for the fox to be thrown alive to the waiting hounds.
