Hurling, Ireland
Hurling isn't what the Irish do when they've had too much Guinness (well, not always). It's actually a mad kind of aerial hockey invented to make the English feel embarrassed about tiggy-touchwood soccer. If you haven't had the twisted pleasure of seeing this example of man's inhumanity to man, head to the Emerald Isle - but keep your head down. This 15-century-old activity pulls no punches. A hurling match is perhaps the fastest spectator sport in the world (with only ice hockey matching it for up-close frenzy). From a distance it resembles a roaming pack-fight between men with thin pale legs and names like Liam and Sean. At ground level it's much more frightening, a kind of 15-a-side escape from the asylum. Hurling is rapid, breakneck and rambunctious. The game moves too fast for the novice to understand anything but the most basic rules, but you can start by imagining an egg-and-spoon race with a pack of enormous angry stick-wielding roosters charging the leader. The aim is to hurtle a pellet-hard ball called a sliotar into goals using a stick with a paddle at its end ( hurley ). The players balance the sliotar on their hurley and then run, hit or bounce it forward, sometimes with all limbs attached.

OUR VIEW
Welcome to Causeway Hurling Club's latest web site if you haven't been with us in some time you will soon see the immense change and we hope improvements that have taken place in the last number of weeks. We will continue in our attempts to improve the site over time hope fully adding new articles and information regularly. Also I promise my attempt to update the site more often will be redoubled many of you have commented on the lack of updates. Let me also point out at this point that anyone is welcome to e-mail me an article or even just a couple of lines which you would like to have added to the site. One of the reasons for the site initially was to allow people all over the world to get a view of what is happening in North Kerry and in particular the Hurling interests and it has been my pleasure to both view the guest book which I might add continues to expand and also to receive many e-mails concerning the site. For those I am indeed grateful, I have had the pleasure of receiving e-mails from all corners of the world America, England and of course Ireland being the most frequent callers. For all the words of support I thank you and as always hope that you keep in touch regularly.
The site is very much under reconstruction and will I'm sure take some time to get to an acceptable standard. The many links, which you will find throughout the site, will come online shortly and hopefully make your navigation that much easier... Thank you once again for calling

Carrickmore Minors fall in Ulster final...
The Minor Hurlers of Carrickmore saw their glorious run of form in the provincial stage end at the Ulster League final stage on Sunday when they fell to Ballycran (Down) at Corrigan Park in Belfast. An impressive win over Antrim champions, Loughgiel, in the semi-final suggested that an historic win was on the cards but the Down side took the honours on a 2-8 to 1-7 scoreline. The Eire Og's will now be concentrating their efforts on the Ulster Minor Club championship, having overcome Dungannon in the Tyrone final a fortnight ago, and will no doubt go into that competition as one of the chief contenders. More to follow... Carrickmore fall to Keady in Ulster Shield FInal...

hurling, However, in hurling, the ball or 'sliotar' is about 25cm in circumferenceand can only be moved across the pitch using the 'hurley' stick.
http://sportsvl.com/ball/hurling.htm
Hurling T his one of the traditional Gaelic sports, played mainly in Ireland. Irish mythology has tales of legendary heroes who were expert hurlers. The modern game has several similarities to Gaelic football, with the same number of players (15), similar goals and scoring. However, in hurling, the ball or 'sliotar' is about 25cm in circumference and can only be moved across the pitch using the 'hurley' stick. The latter is about 1m long, ending with an 8cm, curved blade. The sliotar can be taken off the hurley, prior to hitting it, but cannot be picked up by hand from the ground. Points are scored when the sliotar is hurled between the posts, scoring 1 point above the cross bar or 3 points into the net below the crossbar ...... more detail...
The sport is still controlled by the Gaelic Athletic Association . There are limited associations outside Ireland, but South Australia and North America have active hurling responsibilities and give links to clubs

Ireland beat Wales by a single point in the most dramatic fashion to keep their Grand Slam hopes alive, thanks to the steely nerve of Ronan O'Gara. Stephen Jones had given the hosts a two-point lead in second half injury-time with a drop goal, but immediately after the restart, substitute O'Gara kicked a drop of his own from 40 yards. With a single point in it, there was still time for Jones to have another attempt blocked down by Denis Hickie, and Ireland took victory. Offaly end Cork's run
