Guess who I saw at Indoor-Cricket . . .
In 1984 I umpired a game at the Australian National Indoor-Cricket championships. It was in Perth, Western Australia, at the Lord's Indoor-Cricket Centre in Subiaco. It was the Grand Final of the National Indoor Cricket Open Championships. The favourites, New South Wales, were taking on a team of young upstarts from Victoria. In an outstanding game, the young upstarts won by one run. Despite losing the Grand Final, N.S.W. had in their midst two young players of exceptional ability. They were twins. Their names were Mark and Steve ... Mark and Steve Waugh. They are perhaps Indoor-Cricket's most famous sons. Other former Australian Test players have had significant involvement with Indoor-Cricket. Dougie Walters, Max Walker, Dennis Lillee and Bruce Yardley were involved in the early formative years of the game, and Roger Woolley is still active, playing for Tasmania in the National Masters Championships. Bruce Reid is another recent Test Player heavily involved in the game, running a centre in Ballajura, Western Australia; playing in the Western Australian State League, and representing Western Australia in National Championships (including as playing coach in 1996).

Three weeks into the new season, the race for the championship is beginning to hot up as all four teams have recorded a victory. Aston are top of the table by vitue of more runs scored thus far.
The performacne of the season so far has been a magnificent all-round display by Azmat. He claimed a hatrick in the most unlikeliest of situations against Aston and then scored heavily with the bat.
The matches have been played in the best possible atmosphere with excellent relationships between the players. A minutes silence was observed a couple of weeks ago in respect of Ben Holliake's tradgic death.

National University Indoor Finals
Tuesday, 6th March, Trent Bridge Indoor Cricket Centre, Nottingham As we'd beaten them twice in the Southern tournament, we had high hopes, and these proved to be founded as we restricted them to a total of 35 runs from 8 overs. After a bit of a stutter at the beginning (we lost our opening pair very quickly), we passed their total in the space of 5 overs. Our next match was against Loughborough, who we faced knowing that a victory would more or less guarantee a spot in the final. Again, we fielded first, and bowled them out within 7 overs (some sharp fielding from Felicity A in particular resulting in 4 run-outs) for a total of 61. However, a batting collapse saw us skittled out for 25 as we chased this achievable target. Loughborough : 61 all out (7 overs) Oxford : 25 all out (5 overs) Loughborough win by 36 runs Our final match in the group stage was against Durham, who were fielding two England junior internationals and had swept all before them thus far. We put in the best bowling performance of all of Durham's opponents ... but all that this achieved was to bring back Caroline Atkins (now a member of the England senior squad!), who'd retired earlier having reached 20 - she batted with a runner, as per the rules, and we conceded 21 runs off the final over. This left us chasing a total of 72, and again we suffered a batting collapse - all out for 28 off 7 overs. Oh well. Durham : 72-5 (8 overs) Oxford : 28 all out (7 overs) Durham win by 44 runs

Re: Kingston Indoor Cricket Club (Mr.C.J Cairns) appeal against refusal to approve an application for an On-Premises License. Decision: 30 August 1993 History of the Appeal to the Tribunal 1 On the 22 September, 1992, Mr Cyril Idris Cairns made application for the issue of an On-premises license pursuant to Division 4 of Part 4 of the Liquor Act 1992 (the Act) in respect of premises in which is operated the Kingston Indoor Cricket Centre. 2. During the period in which the application was advertised as being open to inspection two objections were lodged to the proposal, one by the Logan City Council and the other in the form of a petition signed by residents in the vicinity of the Cricket Centre. . As required by the Act, an Objection Conference was held on 19 January, 1993, and this was attended by a representative of the Logan City Council and representatives of the petitioner objectors. 4. The Objection Conference revealed the fact that the applicant did not have the necessary town planning approval from the Local City Council for the proposed extended use of the premises.

http://home.wanadoo.nl/mail.dougout/rw3/indoorcricket.html
Explanation and rules Indoor Cricket
The court
Indoor cricket is played on a court measuring approx. 30 metres long by 10 metres wide: The legside-wide lines are to be positioned 45 cms from the middle stump. The offside-wide lines are to be positioned 90 cms from the middle stump.
Batting Each team has eight players. In batting, the eight players are divided into four pairs and each pair has to face four overs. From each ball the batsman can score runs by hitting into the walls, where different zones are designated in accordance with the diagram above.
They may also score runs by running between the batting crease an running (non-striker) crease. The scoring is accumulative, so if a player hits a ball into the side wall for one run, and they and their partner run a single, they have scored two runs off that delivery. However, if the batsman is dismissed by any method, the batting team loses five runs. The batting pair must face out their four overs, regardless of how many times they are dismissed. Thus, at the end of the sixteen overs, the team may have a negative score! A batsman incurs a five run penalty by:
  • Being bowled (bails must be dislodged) Being caught (even when off the wall first, except when a six is scored)
