http://www.mdkidspage.org/sport.html
State Sport: Jousting The sport of jousting is the official sport of Maryland. Jousters compete by trying to catch a hanging ring on a lance while riding a horse. In 1962, a law was enacted making jousting our State sport. The legislators felt that:
  • jousting was recognized as the oldest, most colorful, traditional equestrian sport known to man and it had been popular in Maryland since colonial days;
  • many people today think of the sport as a real Maryland tradition and it has enthusiastic followers from all over the State of Maryland, as well as from neighboring states;
  • jousting tournaments in Maryland have preserved many of the traditional customs and dignity long associated with the medieval sport and yet the sport has remained untouched by commercialism;
In Maryland, jousting is the sport of charging a horse at full gallop toward 3 suspended rings (hanging from Arches) spaced evenly down a 100 yard track. The rider carries a long, fine tipped lance and attempts to "spear" the rings. The rings range in diameter from 1 3/4" down to 1/4. " This form of jousting is called the "ring tournament" and it is not like earlier forms of the sport where two riders fought against one another in either real or pretend fighting. Today jousting competitions are held throughout Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

  • By: J.J. and John
    In the event of a jousting tournament, each knight would stand 100 yards away from each other with their lances in hand. Then they would charge at each other attempting to knock their opponent off their horse without breaking their lance. If both lances break and the riders don't fall off, their pages would bring them new lances. If they were both knocked off their horse, they would continue the battle with swords on foot until one surrendered. The armor would consist from 14-18 gauge steel depending on the area of where you look. Under the armor would be a mail, or a link of metal links. There was also another type of jousting. . You would try to put your lance through a ring called a joust ring. Squires assisted their knight by having water and an extra sword in case the first sowrd broke. Jousting points

    HISTORY OF JOUSTING
    The first accounts of "Running at the Rings" dates to the days of James I of England demonstrating a knight's extreme skill, since the rings were obviously much smaller to lance than a man. The death of several nobles and at least one king, King Henry II of France in 1559, brought about the demise of the man-to-man type of jousting. It was also during this time that gunpowder was introduced into Europe from the Orient. Guns made warfare by horse-mounted lancers obsolete overnight. Although the precise evolution of ring jousting is not known, history does provide us with many well-documented great tournaments throughout the next several centuries. Cecil Calvert, Lord Baltimore, of the "colonies" is reported to have been the first to introduce jousting here. Jousting in Europe has declined whereas Americans, on the other hand, have built interest steadily. Let's follow the evolution of the sport. The Medieval Tourney
    ...a knight was expected to be gentle and faithful to his lady, fearless in battle and tournament, courteous and merciful to a defeated enemy and honorable in everything. John Hampden, from "The Days of Chivalry"
    Stories from Froissart's Chronicles I vanhoe, Robin Hood, Lancelot, and Joan of Arc the very names ring with chivalry. The question then is "What is Chivalry?". The word comes from chevalerie which derives from cheval , French for horse. And the horse is what set the knight apart. Remember Richard III's cry in Shakespeare, "My kingdom for a horse." The Europeans bred the draft-type horse up in size and strength to carry the ever increasing weight of an armor-bearing knight. Stirrups, which had been brought from the east in about the eighth century, stabilized this armored, lance-bearing warrior astride his gigantic steed. Before stirrups, you clung on as best you could. The shock attack of medieval knights was a weapon of great impact, indeed a military revolution on horseback. The words "tournament" and "joust" are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking "joust" describes single combat between two horsemen. "Tournament" refers to mounted combat between parties of knights, but also is used to refer to the whole proceeding. The first written tournament guidelines are usually credited to a Frenchman named Geoffroi de Purelli in 1066. Unfortunately, he was killed at the very tournament for which he made the rules.

    History of Jousting
    One of the better known sports of the Renaissance period was the Tournament of the Horse which often included jousting. Most of the Faires have incorporated these action packed events into their entertainment. You may see dashing Knights clash at full gallop vying for royal favor. Spectators are urged by the Knight’s squires and medieval criers to support their champion. Although the origins are unsure, formalized jousting rose to the height of it’s popularity in Europe during the 1400’s. An off shoot of the war games ("Melees") staged by Knights on horseback and foot soldiers in open fields, jousting was conducted in colorfully decorated area designated by the nobles for spectator viewing. Initially these "jousts" served as a way for Knights to hone their fighting skills during times of peace, but quickly became a money making venture as the winning team could hold the losers for ranson accepting their horses and armor as payment. The numerous deaths spawned by these events led Popes and English Kings to ban jousting. Such bans did little to curtail the events which became a crowd pleasing attraction at market faires and

    [vote for against This requires little in the way of explanation. I'm not sure that you could get off the ground when being towed behind a horse, but that would make the whole thing more authentic. Maybe big soft jousts so as to not really hurt each other. And you'd need those self righting paragliding set ups so as to not come crashing down to terra firma. Or, Hey! that could be the idea, but you're pulled behind boats over water, and you have to try and knock your opponent down. Zircon , Aug 29 2002 QuarterArcades review of Joust! A classis that used to be installed at Treasure Trap. [ Aristotle link This sounds like Chinese Kite Fighting with kites capable of carrying a man. Kites capable of carrying a man exist as people experimented with them for military purposes both in Ancient China and in the west before airplanes were in common use. The jousting element is just a method of the man in a kite seeking to unsettle his airborne opponent - Chinese Kite Fighting tactics could also be used. Aristotle , Aug 29 2002 Given that falling even twenty feet into water entangled in parasail gear is not without peril, I think we have to wait for DisneySpace before we can consider this one.
