Marathons I have run
Here are the marathons and other races of similar (or greater) distance or difficulty that I have run. I have included the Tararua Mountain Race in the category of runs that are a similar distance and much greater difficulty than a standard road marathon. Distance is said to be about 40km, but approximately 2,200m of aggregate elevation gain over mountainous terrain make it extremely difficult. Race Reports Aurora Marathon 2 June 2001 A very picturesque marathon run through Upper Hutt. I was using this marathon as a training run for a possible future ultra. I recorded a time of 4:16:09, and crossed the finish line feeling fresh. Great Forest Marathon 6 April 2001 An off-road marathon run in very pleasant surroundings at Waitarere Beach. My first time walking a marathon, I recorded a time of 5:04:26. Rotorua Marathon 28 April 2001 A new PB of 3:15:51. I had a fantastic race, passing a large number of runners over the last 15km. Had enough in reserve that the last 2km were the fastest in the race.

T HE M ESSIER M ARATHON
Messier Marathon is a term describing the attempt to find as many Messier objects as possible in one night. Depending on the location of the observer, and season, there is a different number of them visible, as they are not evenly distributed in the celestial sphere. There are heavily crowded regions in the sky, especially the Virgo Cluster and the region around the Galactic Center , while other regions are virtually empty of them. In particular, there are no Messier objects at all at Right Ascensions 21:40 to 23:20, and only the very northern is between RA 21:40 and 0:40. This chance effect leads, at considerably low northern latitudes on Earth (best around 25 degrees North), to the chance to observe all 110 Messier objects in one night! This opportunity occurs once every year, around mid- to end-March; the best time to try is of course when the Moon is near its new phase. For the upcoming years until 2039, we give best Messier Marathon dates here Note: Most Messier Marathoners accept NGC 5866 as M102, either in account of

Training tips Fuelling a marathon Warning: marathon risks Serious dangers Video : the London Marathon Quiz : test your marathon trivia Vote : could you go the whole way? Timeline of events Key Points It's a long, long way. The modern marathon is run over 26.2 miles or 42.195 km The marathon is the only discipline in athletics to have become a popular participation sport After 20 miles many inexperienced runners 'hit the wall' , an infamous experience suffered when their bodies have run out of fuel Some people find it easier to 'marathon' than others. This is partly due to their genes Born to marathon? Some people are better adapted to marathon running than others. This might be by virtue of their build, physiology or mental approach. There is one crucial feature marathon runners must have to stand a chance of competing at the highest level. The right kind of muscles. Marathon muscles There are two different kinds of fibre in muscle:
  • 'Slow twitch' fibres - these contract slowly but they can keep going for a long time 'Fast twitch' fibres - these contract quickly but are rapidly worn out
'Slow twitch' fibres are the key to successful marathon running. If a person has a preponderance of fast-twitch muscles there is no chance of him or her becoming a world-class marathoner. They might however make an ideal sprinter. The marathon runner needs to have a large proportion of slow twitch fibres in their muscles. This characteristic is largely inherited but there is some evidence that training can make a small difference to the proportions of the different fibre types. Findings suggest that a marathon runner must avoid any sprint training at distances less than 100m. Likewise sprinters must never engage in endurance exercise.
