Welcome to Northwest Wisconsin!
This is a very special place anytime of the year, but especially during the winter. Fortunately, the region receives early and frequent snowfall, so you can have as much as four and sometimes five months to sample the region’s numerous trail offerings. Whether you are a casual, occasional skier, an active enthusiast, or an avid racer, Northwest Wisconsin has something for you. From easy going and intimate classically groomed trails suitable for the whole family to the most significant Nordic superhighway in the nation, the American Birkebeiner Trail, the depth of choice is almost overwhelming. Northwest Wisconsin is blessed with over a million of acres of public land, primarily in our County and State Forests and the Chequamegon National Forest. Many trail systems are essentially free, but do accept skier donations or request parking fees. Please support these trail systems by donating generously. Fee based trail systems pride themselves on offering a quality skiing experience and your fees will insure that trails are regularly and conscientiously maintained. Good grooming is very necessary and expensive. Your fees and contributions will not only insure that the trails are groomed regularly, but that these trails will continue to exist. Cross country skiers are important to Northwest Wisconsin, but a nearly invisible part of the regional economy when compared to other winter sport enthusiasts. We can all be ambassadors for the sport and help elevate the image and visibility of cross country skiing. When you visit the area, be sure to let the businesses you patronize know that you are a cross country skier and that is the reason you are visiting the region. A little PR will go a long way.

Nordic skiing: About the events
January 19, 2002 Venue: Soldier Hollow Nordic skiing comprises the biathlon and cross-country events.  The biathlon consists of cross-country skiing and shooting. Athletes ski three 2.5-km legs (7.5 km in total) and fire at five targets between each part. They shoot targets that are 10m away using air guns mounted on stands. Each miss of the target is penalized by an increase in the athlete's overall time. A sound system is used to aid visually impaired athletes. The strength of the signal indicates when to shoot.  Cross-country events include freestyle (10 km and 15 km for women, 10 km and 20 km for men), classic (2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km and 15 km for women and 5 km, 15 km and 20 km for men) and relays (3 x 2.5 km for women, and 1 x 2.5 km plus 2 x 5 km for men). Athletes are divided into three categories: sitting, standing and visually-impaired. Source: International Paralympic Committee

Nordic skiing: competition and classifications
January 19, 2002 Here's a look at the Nordic competitions and classifications for the participating athletes:
Cross-country competition
Events: locomotor standing and blind, sit-ski SD= short distance, MD= middle distance, LD= long distance Women's events: SD = 5 km (Classic technique) MD = 10 km (Free technique) LD = 15 km (Free technique) SD = 2.5 km MD = 5 km LD = 10 km Relay = 3 x 2.5 km (Classic) Men's events: SD = 5 km (Classic Technique) MD = 10 km (Free Technique) LD = 20 km (Free Technique) SD = 5 km MD = 10 km LD = 15 km Relay = 1 x 2.5 km + 2 x 5 km   The ranking in all cross-country skiing events is based on the fastest competition times. The starting order is designed to avoid overtaking as much as possible. Usually, the men start before the women. Each class of competitors is divided into two equal-sized subgroups by seeding. Within the subgroup the start order is decided by draw. The recommended start order of the different classes is as follows:   Men: Sit-ski LW10-12 Women: Sit-ski LW10-12 Men: Visually impaired B1-3 Women: Visually impaired B1-3 Men: Standing LW2-9
