About Swimming - Training for Open Water Swims

A look at training for open water events. Against the Tide Against the Tide is a one-mile, open water fundraising swim to benefit the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. There are events for participation and for competition. In long distance swimming, there are four essential requirements: swim the distance, withstand the cold, survive general conditions, and maintain a good pace. Variables are always changing such as water temperature, air temperature, currents, river speed, wind, waves, not to mention a possible two hundred bodies starting at the same time and trying to get to the same end point. In as minimal words as possible (I talked for an hour and a half to a group in a hotel conference room on this topic and I still could have discussed the finer points of open water swimming), here are a few pointers, which help alleviate some of your race morning anxieties. Know how to swim correctly.
Proper stroke technique can only help. The more efficient you are in the water, the less energy you use to get to a certain point at the same rate of perceived effort. Find a coach or a master's swim program to learn, and watch, correct swim technique. It is also good to get videotaped to see yourself swim and thus give you a visual. The main principles I stress for the freestyle stroke are:
  • Balanced head position - the head dictates the rest of the stroke.

at Herbert Lehman College Open Water Swimming I was flattered to be asked to write an article about my open water swimming techniques. I enjoy encouraging Masters to continually learn and strive to be better swimmers, but at the same time I have been ambivalent about sharing any personal open water secrets. Well, here it is. 3 weeks prior to the swim I am asking myself the following questions during practice:
  • How is my form? Are my hips rolling? Am I getting an equal roll and stretch on both arms? What is my kick doing? 2 beat? Is each leg/foot giving equal propulsion? What breathing pattern is best for me?
During the swim practices I practice that breathing pattern that I can comfortably handle. I also do interval training sets or sets which are equal to the time I expect to be in the water for the race. (For example, if I was expecting to do a 45-minute race, I might do 10 x 200 on 3:00, followed by a set of 10 x 100 on 1:25.) These longer sets increase my physical and mental endurance. On the day of the swim I give these suggestions:
  • Eat a meal 2-3 hours before the race.

by Hazen Kent
A few weeks ago, a question was posted on the TNO forum regarding open water tips and techniques. Upon answering the post, I realized there was absolutely no information on the Tri-Newbies site regarding this subject! Yikes! What was I thinking? So here goes… Please understand, I am not trying to add to anyone’s existing fears of swimming in open waters. But for me to say, "swimming in the open water is a piece of cake. You have nothing to worry about" would be a lie. It can be a wonderful experience but you must be aware of your surroundings and practice safe swimming. Below we will discuss some tips and suggestions for training and racing in the open water that may help you focus less on your trepidations and more on your performance!

The swim in a triathlon can be like a washing machine of arms and legs, and, as a result, most people experience some level of anxiety over open-water mass starts. Whether you're a pro trying to figure out how to get on the fastest feet and pick the best line, or a tri-rookie trying to steer clear of the melee and find some clear water, there are a few pointers you should keep in mind. Most triathletes do the vast majority of their swim mileage in a pool and spend comparatively little time training in a lake, ocean or pond. The pool is ideal for keeping track of split times, pacing and mileage, and allows you to do interval and speed work that can't be done as effectively in open water. However, sometimes the speed you develop in the pool doesn't seem to transfer to race day. Your prime rival who swims in your wake during pool workouts can lead you out of the water by minutes in a race. Sabotaging your competitor before the race is one way to insure victory, but we prefer to leave those evil deeds to the figure skaters. Instead, we will look at a few easy, and legal, ways to bring up the level of your open water swim. Pacing and Starts
Pacing and starts in triathlons differ from pool swimming and racing. In swim clubs, you are taught to go out conservatively during a 1500 and even- or negative-split it. In a tri however, there are no lane ropes, no personal space, and getting boxed in by slower swimmers can leave you far behind your goal.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 24. FOUNDED in 1999 by an accomplished swimmer and avid open-water fan named Robert C. Placak, the RCP Tiburon Mile is an oddity in swimming: It draws the world’s best swimmers; it pays lucrative cash prizes; and it attracts lots of publicity.
This Sunday’s race, which runs a nautical mile between Angel Island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay and affluent Tiburon across the water from San Francisco, boasts no fewer than eight Olympians from the 2000 Sydney Games, including gold medalists Brooke Bennett, Tom Malchow, and Scott Goldblatt.
In addition, three open water world champions are scheduled to compete. In effect, that makes the 2002 Tiburon Mile one of the first true head-to-head match- ups between the world’s best pool swimmers and the best ocean swimmers.
For an open water event, the prize money is simply astounding. The male and female winners walk away with $10,000 each. (Second place claims $2,000 and third places earns $1,000).

The Open Water Swimming Rules in Part IV of the FINA Handbook shall apply to Masters Open Water Swimming with the following exceptions. MOWS 1 Masters Open Water Swimming events will normally be up to 5 km with a maximum distance, under favourable circumstances, of 10 km (over 50 years age groups), and 15 km (under 50 years age groups). Favourable circumstances are defined as a high water temperature with no adverse conditions. No Masters open water events should be held in water less than an average of 18° Centigrade. Paddle boards/canoes at a minimum 10 to 1 swimmer to escort ratio with a backup of powered craft at a minimum 20 to 1 ratio should be provided. For distances over 5 km, an escort paddle board/canoe should be provided for each swimmer with a power boat back up ratio of 15 to 1. All paddle board/canoe escorts should be fit and trained in close support techniques for supporting an unconscious swimmer until a rescue craft can attend. Powered craft should not be allowed in close proximity to swimmers. They must remain clear of the course ready to render assistance if required.

Queensland Swimming
KEEPING QUEENSLAND SWIMMING NUMBER ONE

Queensland Swimming would like to thank its supporters.
You are here:
Open water swimming is often regarded as the most difficult of swimming events. Not only does the swimmer need speed and endurance, but he/she also needs to be able to navigate the course and battle the elements. Swimming conditions are dictated by geography and weather and therefore can change quickly, even during the race. Race times vary from approximately 1 hour, up to 5 hours depending on the length of the race. Distances range from five kilometres (minimum) to 25 kilometres.
Open water swimmers need to be more than just good swimmers, they also need to possess mental toughness and determination. Many discomforts may have to be endured – cold, rough water, wind, aquatic plant and marine life, to name a few. Athletes also have to coordinate drink and nourishment breaks in the longer events. It takes a special athlete to take up the challenge of open water swimming. However, the sense of achievement in finishing a race is satisfying, and of course the thrill of racing and the joy of success are strong motivating factors.
The State Open Water Championships are held annually in February or March. For more information contact Queensland Swimming.
