Hatchmere Lake

Nat Grid Reference SJ553722 Hatchmere Lake which is located near Delamere Forest in Cheshire has been used for leisure activities by thousands of people from all over the North West for generations. The Lake is particularly popular with families with young children who come to enjoy the water and picnic on a patch of grass verge. It was one of two traditional summer outing sites in the Frodsham area for many years. The popularity of the lake has declined in recent years not least following an unsuccessful attempt by the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, who bought it with the aid of a National Lottery grant, to turn it into an exclusive fishing lake. The Trust's attitude towards bathing in the lake is demonstrated by an outstanding display of 'Danger' signs believed to be the best in the UK.
Swimming is from a sandy bay just by the Carriers Inn pub in Norley. There is a gentle slope ideal for children (who must be supervised at all times). Water temperature can be over 20C in July and August. The bay can be affected by algae scum during late summer but this is not necessarily blue-green or toxic. Take the Department of Health advice and avoid contact with the scum and the water close to it.
Hanmer Mere
Nat Grid Reference SJ454390 The mere is by Hanmer village, Shropshire, about 10 Kilometres west of Whitchurch on the A539 Whitchurch to Ruabon Road.

First, a quick overview of Umbra and Ted:
BELOW:
On left are more details on Umbra and Ted background and on right (gray bar) links of significance to marathon (over 10 miles, primarily!) solo and professional swims and swimmers....
..Umbra, born about June, 1990 and found six months later as an unclaimed stray, was adopted by Ted Erikson and Diane Richards. Of sleek body and short all black hair, her lineage is unknown, but even as a puppy she exhibited a Labrador's love of water and a Greyhound's love of running. Umbra began swimming tandem with Erikson in Lake Michigan during the summer of 1991, establishing a benchmark of a 32-minute mile. Over the summer of 1992, Umbra decreased her mile time to 28.5 minutes and covered distances up to three miles while pacing Nial Funchion, who went on to complete an English Channel crossing that year. Umbra has pioneered canine swimming with four 'first' records filed with the Guinness Book of World Records * A round trip Peace River crossing in Port Charlotte, Fl on 3/9/94 (2.4 miles,65 min.)
*An open water Lake Michigan swim in Chicago, IL on 7/10/94 (2.7 miles, 72 min.)

Open-water swimming at Clearwater Beach
By TERRY TOMALIN, Times Outdoors Writer Everybody needs a good place to swim. This beach, with its well-marked, 2-mile-long "safe bathing area," is a great place for a workout. Lifeguards (full-time, year-round professionals) watch the water from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. But the best time for a long swim is the morning or evening when there are no crowds. You can swim by yourself or join one of two organized groups that meet each week on the beach. Steve Strange, founder of the "Strange Man Biathlon," leads a group that meets every Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Pier 60. Ron Collins, the first man to swim the length of Tampa Bay, leads another group that meets at the same place on Sundays at 8 a.m. All are welcome. Multisport Coaching WELCOME!
by Karen Dehmel
You take off your shoes to test the water temperature. It looks clear and inviting, but is it warm enough yet to take the plunge? A quick dab at the water with your big toe... brrrrrr! No way, not quite yet. But soon enough it will be time to hit the open water for triathlon training and competition. For me, swimming in open water gives me a sense of freedom. I truly look forward to it! Gone are the confines of the tiled, walled box filled with chlorinated water. A grid of lane lines forces us to swim in a straight line. With no where else to look, we stare at the black line on the bottom or the ceiling with paint chips curling back, preparing to fall like leaves off a tree. Lap after lap after lap. Turn after turn after turn, after turn. The boundaries can make training monotonous. I'm psyched when my open-water training and competition days are in sight! But that means making adjustments in my training techniques. Swimming in the pool is good preparation for open-water swimming from a fitness perspective, but let's face it, its hard to swim straight without guidance from lane lines or a black line. There isn't a tiled bottom to stand on if you need to catch your breath, and a pace clock to measure your progress. This is foreign territory! For those of you who are relatively new to open-water swimming, here are a few tips:
