The members of Racewalk West invite you to come in and enjoy our site. We have a wide variety of skills and talents and we're more than willing to share them with you.
The title of this page describes the two basic rules of Racewalking. The rules were put in place to assure that all competitors would proceed by means of a "fair" walk.
There must be continuous contact with the ground, no "flight" phase as you see in running. The walker must also maintain a straight leg from the time the foot touches the ground until the hip passes over the foot, this gives us our characteristic wiggle.
And there you have it. That's all the rules you need to know, the rest is technique, strength and endurance.
What are you waiting for, give it a try!

racewalking Brief History During this decade it is possible that the National Postal One Hour racewalking championship was born.
    http://www.erofit.com/rwalkHistRules.html
    RACEWALKING - Brief History
The sport of racewalking has its' inception in England, as do many of our sports (fishing, hunting, boxing, rowing, horse racing and trotting). It was first known as pedestrianism, dating back to 1589 when Robert Carey walked from London to Berwick to win a large wager. Competitive walking can be traced to the late 16th century or early 17th century. Professional pedestrianism had very few rules. The mode of movement was defined as "fair heel and toe". Pedestrians of the 18th century raced against time, at the turn of the 19th century man was racing against man. By 1820, walking contests began in America. Celebrity walkers would draw crowds of 25,000 from town to town. Both men and women competed in long distance events for money. During this decade it is possible that the "National Postal One Hour" racewalking championship was born. Athletic clubs arrived in America in the 1860s. Young men with leisure time developed a concern for their sedentary lifestyle. College students of the 1870s began to develop an interest in track and field events. Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IAA) was organized in 1876. The modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896. Due to the increased interest in racewalking, the event was placed on the program in the 1908 Olympic Games in London. The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was formed in 1913 to regulate and supervise amateur athletics including racewalking. Racewalking for women received official status when the women's 10Km was included in the 1992 Olympic Games. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the women's distance was increased to 20Km.

My Racewalking web pages that where located at: www.monmouth.com/~csheller/racewalking/ have been "finally" removed. I will be revising them and they will be hosted right here with my curtsheller.com and jazzguitarresources.com web sites. They will be a smaller, more streamlined version. Some people might be wonder what I've been up to in the past 4-5 years. Well its been hectic since moving back to PA from good old Asbury Park, NJ. I've been thru a few contract programming jobs and yet another downsizing. So I've made the plunge and have become a full time musician. I'm balancing the music gig with teaching guitar and bass (60+ students), started a publishing company and recording. Check out my new CD at curtsheller.com

    Racewalking - Slogans
Here is a collection of race walking slogans as heard on the Racewalk List . It started to get out of hand but I'll list them anyway. Now mysite won't pass any of the parental filtering software ;-(. It started out as a way to get the High School kids interedted in race walking and the type of t-shirts with slogs that are typicially seen at cross-country meets. Enjoy! And, if you would like a slogan added e-mail and and I'll add it.
    Potential Slogans for Racewalking
From Dave McGovern - The latest salvo: T-shirt slogans for high school racewalkers:
  • Do you like to puke? Try racewalking!
  • Racewalking: It's harder than runningbut people laugh at you anyway.
  • Racewalking: The "Injury Free Sport!" (Except for chronic tendonitis, hamstring pulls, inguinal hernias, sciatica, etc., etc., etc.)
  • Racewalking: Do it wrong and we throw your a** out!
