82. Racewalking Rules And Technique
racewalking Rules and Technique. Each time you pull your knee back your legwill straighten under your body just as it will when you're racewalking.
http://www.state.vt.us/gcpfs/RacewalkRules.htm
Racewalking Rules and Technique
Rules: Racewalkers must keep one foot on the ground at all times.
They must keep their knees straight from the movement the heel of the advancing leg hits the ground until that leg passes directly under the body.
Racewalkers must not shuffle, jog or run.
Technique: To get an idea of what racewalking feels like, simply stand in place with your feet together and your arms held by your sides with the elbows bent 90 degrees. Now pump your knees forward and back while keeping your feet flat on the ground with your weight on your heels. Each time you pull your knee back your leg will straighten under your body just as it will when you're racewalking.
Now all you need to do is add some stride length by stepping forward a bit with either foot each time you pump your knees. Just be sure to land on your heels, otherwise your knees will probably bend when your foot hits the ground. Concentrate on taking short quick steps rather than long slow strides. If you do that, you'll have an easier time keeping your knees straight, and you'll expend much less energy.

Just What Is Racewalking Anyway?
By Sara Sheets and Ralph Dehner
Most of you have probably seen men and women walking around town, on local tracks, and at races swinging their hips, straightening their knees, and walking pretty darn fast. Sometimes they may even pass you running. In this inaugural article by the Cincinnati Walking Club, we'd like to give you a little background about racewalking and explain what you're seeing as those walkers go by.
The history of racewalking goes back to at least mid-18th century England, where such contests were part of country fairs and many feats of "pedestrian" endurance were recorded. Although the rules of racewalking were not clearly defined at the time, there was a clear distinction between walking and running. By the middle of the 19th century, the sport had become a professional endeavor in England.
By the late 19th century, walking became an amateur sport in the U.S.; reports suggest that early Ohio activity was centered in Cincinnati, thanks in large part to the walking division in the Thanksgiving Day race, which was first held in 1908.
Also in 1908, racewalking made its debut in the Olympic Games. Internationally, men and women compete at the 20K distance (12.4 miles) and men also compete at the grueling 50K distance (31 miles), making it the longest track and field event in the summer games at almost five miles longer than the Marathon!

Racewalking - How it Works.
Follow Ups Post Followup Athletics FAQ Posted by Ray Smith on January 04, 2001 at 03:29:32: RACEWALKING - HOW IT WORKS Walking, as a competitive sport, is a race between two or more people,
or against time. Most races are held at distances ranging from 1,500 to 50,000 meters.
One and two hour races are also held on the track with each competitor's distance measured. Competitive walkers employ a method of walking which is sometimes
called the "heel-and-toe."
An extended stride lands the foot on the heel and rolls the walker
forward
to put weight quickly on the toes.
The toes act as a "propellant " for the next stride. THE FOOT of advancing leg must contact ground. before the foot of the
trailing leg looses contact with the ground. THE LEG must be straight [not bent at the knee] when the foot of
advancing leg first touches the ground and remain straight until it
reaches mid stride at vertical upright position. Walk judges are spaced around the course. - dependant upon the dimensions of the race. One is elected as Chief Walk Judge and is the spokesperson for the entire judging panel.
