painting here (and larger here-43K ) shows the outside of the Royal Tennis Court and Hampton Court Palace. Originally the court was built by Henry VIII in about 1530. As a young, handsome, athletic man Henry was passionately addicted to sport, and particularly to tennis. Legend has it that he heard of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn as he played tennis at Hampton Court Palace. During the 17th century various improvements were made to the court. One of the first acts of Charles II after his restoration in 1660 was to order the extensive refitting of the Tudor Tennis Court. This included the laying of a new tile floor, the remodelling of the galleries and repairs to the roof. At the same time, new nets, curtains and velvet cushions for the spectator's seats were provided. The interlaced initials above the net on the wall opposite the corridors (reproduced above right ) are however not those of Charles but of William and Mary (1689-1702). Since the end of the 17th century the court has undergone little alteration. However progress is not incompatible with history: in 1975 sodium halide lighting was installed making the court the best lit in Great Britain and possibly anywhere.

http://www.calpoly.edu/~dlord/tennis.html
T UDOR T ENNIS C OURT Note the daylighting features of the Tudor tennis court at Hampton Court palace, Southwest London. The location of the windows, the splayed cornice and reflective ceiling are an effective combination for bringing in satisfactory daylight for playing the game. The origins of tennis can be traced to a 12th-13th-century French handball game called jeu de paume ("game of the palm"), from which was derived a complex indoor racket-and-ball game: real (royal) tennis. This ancient game is still played to a limited degree and is usually called real tennis in Britain, court tennis in the United States, and royal tennis in Australia. Real tennis is now played at fewer than 30 courts in the world. The court at Hampton Court palace, where Henry VIII played, is still used occasionally. [Henry VIII, king of England (1509-47), presided over the beginnings of the English Renaissance and the English Reformation.] Real tennis is played on an indoor court with four irregularly sized walls, using pear-shaped, lopsided rackets to hit cloth balls that are much harder than those used in lawn tennis. Roofs to the court slope over a net that is 1.5 m (5 feet) high at its sides and 0.9 m (3 feet) in the middle. The construction of this type of court is complex and difficult, and the declining number of players discourages the building of new courts. The world real tennis championship is decided by challenge match, in which a player challenges the champion to defend his title. Pierre Etchebaster held the world title from 1938 to 1954, when he retired at the age of 61.

"KING OF GAMES, GAME OF KINGS" Real Tennis as it is called in Britain, Royal Tennis as it is called in Australia, Court Tennis as it is called in the States, Jeu de Paume as it is called in France or Tennis as it is properly known, is the oldest of all the racket games, and unlike most of the others, such as squash or lawn tennis, it is a product of evolution rather than pure invention. The game started to form into something recognisable in the 11th century. It started as hand ball, played by monks around the cloisters of monasteries in Italy and France, much as schoolchildren do in any appropriate corner of their school, and rules varied to suit local whims and conditions. Gradually, as monks travelled to other monasteries, the more enjoyable rules were more generally adopted, the more bizarre rules abandoned and people started to add features to their courtyards that improved the pastime, and demolish or modify others that detracted from it. The monks enjoyed the game so much that the Pope banned the playing of it, and by the 14th century the game had spread from cloister to castle and become a game of the nobility.

A ROYAL TENNIS COURT JK GILLON Edinburgh's Royal Tennis Court was in a covered building just outside the gates of Holyrood Palace. Royal or Real Tennis originated in France. It is considered the oldest and most difficult of all ball games and was a fashionable amusement in the 16th and 17th centuries in Scotland. It is much more elaborate than modern tennis. Play involves hitting a ball with racquets both over a net and against the walls of the court.
The Duke of Albany, later James VII of Scotland, was among the players in the Royal Tennis court. The Royal Tennis Court is also connected with early Scottish theatre. In the latter part of the 16th century, several theatrical companies performed in a temporary theatre at the Royal Tennis Court. In 1601, an English company of actors, headed by a Laurence Fletcher, 'comedian to his Majestie', appeared at the Royal Tennis Court. Among Fletcher's company was William Shakespeare. It is generally agreed that he visited Scotland at this time and sketched out a plan for Macbeth.
Members of the Royal Family, including the future Queen Anne, took part in some of the many plays. The last recorded theatrical presentation at the Royal Tennis Court was in 1714 when Macbeth was performed 'in the presence of a brilliant array of Scottish Nobles, after an archery competition'.

The present court was constructed for Charles I in 1625. Tennis began in 12th century France, visitors are told, and they discover how important "real" or "royal" tennis has been in the life of the monarchy. Henry VIII is said to have heard the news of Queen Anne Boleyn's execution while playing a game here and Charles II ordered the court be refurbished after the restoration of the monarchy in England. Thanks to Charles the spectators' seats have velvet cushions. Play still takes place here. If a game is in progress when visitors attend they are welcome to watch. The popularity of the game has declined somewhat. France boasted 1,800 courts in the 13th century. Today it has just three. Britain has 26. Nevertheless, Hampton Court is building a second court to cope with increased demand and six new courts have been built since 1990 - reflecting a resurgence in the game's popularity in the UK.
