GOLLY'S GAME Among its many distinctions, Newtonmore is the home to one of the finest shinty teams in Scotland. The game was once used as a battle training exercise by Celtic warriors- it's probably Golly's game. Because of the large number of shinty players hereabouts, the golf club is alleged to have the largest proportion of left-handers in the country. And not many people know that...

Shinty in Munich
Shinty is Scotland's national sport. The game has sometimes been described as 'hockey without rules' but the lack of restrictions in shinty results in a hard, fast and skil ful game with a big enjoyment factor.
In the Middle Ages Shinty games were already played in the Highlands. In Ireland a similar sport "Hurling" was played. Later the hockey sport was derived from shinty and hurling by introduction of additional rules.

Shinty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Shinty , officially known as camanachd , is a team sport played with sticks and a ball. Played almost exclusively in the Scottish Highlands , the sport was derived from the game of hurling
Game
The objective of the game is to play a small ball in a goal, or hail , erected at the ends of a 160-yard-long pitch. The ball is played using the caman , a stick of about 3 1/2 ft in length. Unlike the hurling caman, it has no blade. A team consists of 12 players, with one goalkeeper. A match is played over two halves of 45 minutes. With the exception of the keeper, no player is allowed to play the ball with his hands.
History
Gaelic invaders from Ireland brought the sport of hurling to Scotland, where the game was played as such until the

100 YEARS OF SHINTY
Shinty has been present at Edinburgh University from as early as the 1850s. The first mention of the Club in 'Student' was made in 1891, when it was reported that a meeting was held regarding the formation of a University Shinty Club. A match was then played at Inverleith Park between teams representing Arts and Medicine. In the early days, fixtures were scarce and without doubt matches against Edinburgh Camanachd and Aberdeen University ensured survival. But in 1899, the Club was admitted into the Camanachd Association and regular entry into the Association's Challenge Cup began. With these foundations in place, prominent teams and players emerged over the years. The period between 1927 and 1936 is regarded as the most successful in the Club's history - the Littlejohn Vase was held for six years in succession and the Club enjoyed a series of very good cup runs in South competitions. After World War Two, the Club's revival is attributed to Archie Lamont, and it is at this point that the Committee decided that the "Club should no longer be limited to hard living, hard drinking, Gaelic speaking Highlanders", perhaps reflecting the reduction in the aforementioned than anything else.

http://www.allesoverballen.com/engels/SHINTY.html
SHINTY BALLS Shinty is an old Gaelic Scottish ball game, originating form the Celts. They called it camanachd , the "sport of the curved stick", a game designed to exercise warriors. The first official rules of the game were presented by the Glasgow Celtic Society in 1879.  The game is played with two teams of 12, and takes 2 x 45 minutes. Both sides of the field have a goal. Each player has a curved stick, a caman . The ball is made of stitched leather and has a diameter of 7.5 to 8 inches, and weighs 2.5 to 3 ounces. Only the goal keeper can touch the ball with his hands. The other players can only use the stick to hit, push or stop the ball. A variant of shinty is played in Ireland. It's called hurling there. Amended rules exist, so that both hurling- and shinty-players can play together! What a sport!  Shinty is a popular game for Scottish youth too.
