How It Works
Walking the Course
Scoring
The first time a refusal occurs, the penalty is three faults; six faults are given for the second, and the third constitutes elimination. A penalty of four faults is incurred each time a fence is knocked down and the penalty for the horse touching the water at a water jump is also four faults.
Penalties can also be incurred for exceeding the time allowed to complete the course. The winner is the horse and rider combination with the fewest jumping and time penalties.
Frequently, several horses complete the course without penalty and advance to a jump-off over a shortened course. In the jump-off, the same scoring rules apply, except that in the case of equal faults, the horse with the fastest time will be declared the winner. Regulations Governing Show Jumping
International show jumping competitions are governed by the Federation Equestre Internationale, which sets forth rules and regulations.

(New York: Atheneum, 1987) Practice builds skill and confidence A number of equestrian sports include jumping.
If you’re thinking of jumping over jumps and other obstacles in an indoor or outdoor arena, then you’re probably interested in show jumping
If you see your horse vaulting over streams and sliding down banks, leaping over hedges and natural obstacles, then the sport for you is cross-country riding. More about Jumping

What other choices do I have among riding sports? And where do I find more information about horses? A sport related to cross-country riding but with a slightly different objective is fox hunting . You’ve probably seen movies or pictures of a foxhunt in the British countryside, with riders going “off to the hounds” in pursuit of the quarry. The interesting challenge of this hunt is that the fox sets the course. The rider may get a jolting surprise when jumping an innocuous-looking barricade only to land

An Overview
"World-class equestrians - and those who follow equestrian competition
at its highest level - are passionate about their sport. But they have to
be. Because competition is about becoming the best - and in the case of
equestrian sport, not just the best athlete, but the optimum union of horse
and human - facing challenges that human athletes could not cope with alone."
The United States Equestrian Team is the non-profit organization, which selects, trains, equips, finances and promotes equestrians of the highest possible standard to represent our country in major international competition, including the Olympics Games and the World Championships. In doing so, the USET seeks out and nurtures the development of talented athletes -riders, drivers and horses - and provides the support and guidance they need to help them attain their fullest potential. Athletes representing the USET have achieved outstanding success over the last four decades. By winning World Championships in Show Jumping, Eventing, Endurance Riding and Combined Driving, the USET has positioned itself among the world's elite equestrian powers. An impressive 27 Olympic and 61 Pan American Games Medals in Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing give US equestrians a record of which the entire country can be proud.
