    85. The Skittles War
The skittles War By Brenda High I remember watching TV. No one really knowshow the skittles war got started, or who slung the first Skittle.

    The Skittles War
By Brenda High I remember the day when Skittles became a part of my heart and a sweet memory of a "war" that my son, Jared, once fought. It all started innocently with a couple of large bags of Skittles bought at Costco for Jared's thirteenth birthday party. Skittles was Jared's favorite candy. A bag of Skittles was opened and placed in a bowl on the table in the basement, commonly called the 'dungeon'. I avoid the basement on a normal day. (There are three bedrooms down there and as long as I don't spend time wandering around looking at the mess the kids are making and what needs to be cleaned, I'm stress-free.) The 'dungeon' is a place where fun activities, TV, parties, and computer games are played. A second bag of skittles was strategically placed by the bookcase in front of the TV. This made it possible for handfuls of Skittles to be popped in the mouth while laying in a bean bag and watching TV. No one really knows how the Skittles war got started, or who slung the first Skittle. It's rumored that someone found a way to fling a Skittle, by way of rubber band, towards an unsuspecting party goer. Although the first Skittle was harmlessly and lightly flicked, no one expected the rampage that would soon follow. War was declared within seconds!

Skittles Not unlike tenpin bowling, skittles is a simple game that's terrific for children. You can make a fantastic colourful, textured set of skittles from a few old plastic soft drink bottles. More Craft >>
    Search FACT SHEETS >>

Wash your bottles and lids in warm, soapy water, removing any labels. Let them dry thoroughly.
Weight each bottle with a cup of sand for stability. Use a funnel to avoid spills. Replace the top tightly.
Next, apply a base coat to the plastic bottles in your chosen acrylic paint and coat the top in a contrasting colour. We used country blue for the bottles and primary yellow for the tops.
While the bottles are drying (about 20 minutes), trace out some basic shapes onto your coloured felt. You can use cookie cutters, coins and a ruler. Cut out the shapes. Our design consisted of yellow stars (eight for each bottle), white circles (eight for each bottle) to go in the centre of the stars and purple stripes (five for each bottle).
Once the bottles are dry, start sticking on the felt shapes, starting with the purple stripes. Working on one at a time, lay them flat and brush on the glue, making sure it's applied thinly and evenly. Too much glue will soak into the felt, leaving a mark. Now glue on the yellow stars and white centres.

Brick Skittles. Because some people used nine-pins as a gambling game, authorities thought to stamp out the evil by making the game unlawful. But after the law against nine-pins was passed the proprietors of the bowling alleys hung out signs "Ten-pins played here," and as the law said nothing about ten-pins the authorities were unable to interfere. Ten-pins thus became the American game. At first all games with balls and pins as bowls and skittles were out-door games and played on smooth, level grass-plots similar to the old Bowling Green in New York City.

    British Skittles
British skittles is a game allied in character to bowls. In the last century skittles was a fashionable game. An old print of 1786 represents a skittle-alley of that period. The alley is fringed with poplars, and has at one end a summer-house. Here three gentlemen in cocked hats read the news and partake of refreshments. More refreshments are carried by a waiter. Old-fashioned "dudes" in cocked hats look on, while a friend rolls a ball at the pins. The moral is :

    100. A Long Throw Since Skittles
A long throw since skittles game was born. One day one of my chums turnedup with a book showing pub skittles as played in England.

A long throw since skittles game was born From Harry Foy's Book 'Growing up in Portadown in the Thirties and Forties'
One day one of my chums turned up with a book showing pub skittles as played in England. We decided to have our own version and we went to the "dump" which in those days was Bridge Street South. The only thing we could find were old brass bedends. We then went to McClement's, the monumental sculptors, in Francis Street, who used a lot of piping for grave surrounds. They gave us end cuttings of galvanised piping which we used as throwers. We marked out a square on the ground in the entry and placed a brass bedend in each corner and one in the middle. The object was to knock the bed ends out of the ring with the galvanised pipe throwers. The game of skittles was born.
Later, on the way home from school, we found wooden blocks outside Mason's shop in Thomas Street. Harry Mason gave us a bagful of these circular blocks which were used in rolls of linoleum. So the game was improved, this time using wood instead of iron. At that time there were large numbers of men unemployed so they joined in the game. Eventually special skittles were manufactured on a lathe. A cement square for a pitch was laid and competitions started in earnest. Other areas followed suit and then a skittle league was formed. The team in Marley Street was called "Regal View". Years, later, the skittles final was broadcast by the BBC.
