Hey! Let's go camping! (sastrugi = a type of old, windblown snow waves) As seen in: Yahoo! Internet Life Jeep News Last Updated: 02/20/02 Why snow? Keeps the mosquitoes away. Reason enough to try winter camping. Plus, the bears are asleep most of the time. Before you head out, make sure you know what you're doing. As in any wilderness pursuit where help is not just a phone call away, you are in charge of your well-being... and in wintertime, the margin for error is very small. So hook up with someone experienced, hire a guide, look for a teacher, because little mistakes add up quickly and before you know it you've got yourself into a very dicey situation. While I'm at it, let me point out that I don't think you can learn to winter camp safely from a book, I don't think you can learn it from a Web site... And as the author of this site, I will tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt: you cannot learn to winter camp safely just from the information on this site (a fact that will become grossly apparent as you explore further). I won't deny that some books have helped me tremendously, but most of this stuff is my personal opinion, and it will serve you only if you have enough experience to be able to assess it from an educated viewpoint, and ignore whatever doesn't work for you. To summarize: if you go out and freeze all your toes off, don't blame me. I promise I won't blame you if I freeze any extremities, either.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoe Introduction
Our family has recently taken up snowshoeing as a winter activity. December of 2000 brought quite a bit of snow to Iowa; it's really been the first time in several years that there has consistently been good snow for sledding, cross-country skiing, and other snow sports. We were recently at a local outdoor store, and spotted some snowshoes. They appealed to us because they are relatively inexpensive, they don't take any special skill (so all members of the family can participate), and we like to get out and walk. Plus, some of the equipment (such as hiking boots and packs) can be used year-round. That was appealing also. Since we're just recreational hikers, we selected recreational snowshoes. A hike for an hour or two is plenty long for us right now, but maybe we'll build up to enjoy the longer hikes. (I'd like to take the family to the glacier at Estes Park in Colorado, but that's another story...) There's plenty of places to hike, so there's plenty of places to snowshoe, too!
Where To Snowshoe
The local conservation board has a natural area named Wickiup Hill . We like to hike there in the summer (except when the mosquitoes are out), so we figured that we'd like to hike there in the winter, too. We need to check out some of the other natural areas.

For some mountain enthusiasts, snowshoes are a critical tool to get to the base of a climb or the top of a slope prior to snowboarding down. For others snowshoeing is an end in itself - providing exercise and enjoyment of the winter wonderland. For those without the inclination for skiing, snowshoes offer an easy, gratifying way to access the snowy backcountry. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Snowshoes have been used in North America for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, and this evolution has provided the present-day user with a wide range of styles to choose from. Some people prefer styles and materials as near as practicable to traditional models. Others prefer the generally lower maintenance and the latitude for experimentation and innovation permitted by high-tech materials and manufacturing processes. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION Traditional - Traditional snowshoes are made with largely organic materials wood and varnished rawhide lacing (babiche). Rawhide is laced onto the wooden frame while wet and shrinks as it dries, providing a very stiff and light deck. Both the frame and the rawhide must be varnished regularly as rawhide can absorb four times its weight in water in wet conditions, causing the shoes to lose tension and gain weight. Wooden snowshoes intended for wet conditions are sometimes made with one-piece decks of neoprene or polyethylene, both of which are virtually maintenance-free.
