41. VermontVacation.com | Vermont Recreation | Snowshoeing
snowshoers to trek almost anywhere with ease. So come try snowshoeingin its ideal state. It's invigorating exercise, a perfect activity
http://www.vermontvacation.com/recreation/snowshoeing.asp
nowshoeing has been a way of life in the Green Mountains for well over a century, long before the sport became fashionable again. We've got countless ways to make tracks into the snowy wilderness, whether it's a nature trek, a climb or a winter workout you're looking for.
Best of all, when you strap on showshoes in Vermont, you step into a spectacular landscape that seems to have been made just for the sport, all while enjoying one of the healthiest forms of winter exercise.
For starters, Vermont has dozens of king-of-the-mountain climbs: easy, accessible peaks offering stunning winter vistas, and a bunch of rugged 4,000-footers where experienced snowshoers can find the remote solitude and breathtaking beauty of a winter mountaintop. If you want to look for wildlife or explore the tranquility of our snowy forests and fields, we've got untold miles of old logging roads and forest paths, frozen lakes and bogs, nature trails and recreation paths. No matter where you are in Vermont, a great trek is just a few steps away. Plus, Vermont's Green Mountain Club sponsors sociable treks throughout the state and climbs all winter on parts of the Long Trail, which runs the length of Vermont across the high mountains. If you've never tried snow- shoeing but want to get started, that's easy too. Cross country ski centers, alpine ski resorts, sport shops and inns all over Vermont rent snowshoes or offer guided walks that introduce this ancient form of winter travel - on light, modern shoes that make it a breeze. And everywhere all winter, you'll find all kinds of exciting opportunities, from moonlight hikes to tours on mountain ridgelines, snowshoe races and bird-watching expeditions.

Jackson Hole Skiing
Snowshoe Tours In 1806, mountain man John Colter wandered south through a wintry Jackson Hole in search of beaver pelts. According to most historians, he was the first white man to see the west’s most famous valley. On his feet, he probably wore snowshoes. Two hundred years later, snowshoes are still one of the easiest means of traveling across Jackson Hole’s wild winter landscape. If you can walk, you can snowshoe, and therefore enjoy all that Wyoming’s snowy backcountry has to offer. Whether you’d like to rent a pair of snowshoes for an afternoon walk in the woods, or prefer a multi-day, fully catered exploration led by knowledgeable naturalists, Jackson Hole’s outfitters, guide services, and lodges are sure to get you off on the right foot.

snowshoeing Frequently Asked Snowshoeing Questions
Individuals and families looking for a great way to enjoy snow sports without making a huge investment need look no farther than their shoes-snowshoes that is. Snowshoeing has been one of the fastest-growing snow sports of the 1990's.
With its easy accessibility and inexpensive equipment, it's no wonder so many people are finding out how much fun hiking through the winter woods, or across a snowy parking lot, can be.
There are three main snowshoe markets and shoes developed to suit each one: recreational hiking; advanced mountaineering; and snowshoe racing or sport. The recreational hiking market is the fastest growing, but snowshoe manufacturers also continue to build upon their high-performance shoes.
Although snowshoes have been a mode of transportation for thousands of years, only recently has snowshoeing become popular as an on-snow recreation activity. Because the sport is so new, you probably have lots of questions about getting started and getting off on the right foot.

General Information
The Boulder Ranger District has excellent snowshoeing, from easy beginner trips to long, advanced trips. The snowshoe season generally runs from December to April, but it varies a great deal depending on the snowfall. In early snow years, there can be fine snowshoeing in November; in late snow years the base may remain thin and rocky until February. March and April are usually the heaviest snow months. By mid April the snow generally becomes slushy and poor, but snowshoeing is more forgiving of poor snow than skiing and can continue into June, expecially for those willing to carry snowshoes the first mile or two.

Tips from Tubbs Snowshoes:
What to Wear:
Snowshoe Safety:

A day pack for essentials including ample water and food supply is highly recommended for anything other than short walks. Emergency first aid supplies are always a good idea. Hikers should advise the Recreation Center, as well as friends or family, as to destination and estimated time of return, and check with the local weather service or Hawk staff before setting out. Also be sure to have a trail map with you. It is not recommended to trek alone or to begin your trek late in the day if you are unfamiliar with Hawk's trail network.
General Information:
  • Be aware of the weather forecast and sunset times.
