Strap on a pair of lightweight aluminum snowshoes and you'll quickly see why snowshoeing has become one of the fastest-growing winter sports. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. People are using snowshoes for a variety of activities everything from hiking into pristine wilderness and aerobic conditioing to pure recreation with family and friends. They're using snowshoes for discovery and adventure, whether in far-off mountains or their own backyard. Even though snowshoeing is easy to learn, it can still seem intimidating to first-timers. First-timers can be overwhelmed by new technological advances and the variety of equipment choices. This guide is designed to give you some basic information that will help you get started snowshoeing the right way. Skip to: Gear Up
Before renting or purchasing equipment, ask yourself a few questions: How much do you think you'll be snowshoeing? Will you be snowshoeing only on a vacation or also near where you live? Determining your projected commitment level will help you decide whether to rent or to buy equipment.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing has seen an explosion in popularity lately and it isn’t hard to figure out why. Snowshoeing can be an incredible physical workout, or it can be a perfect relaxing stroll through the snow-hushed woods. Its also not an expensive sport. And, being portable, snowshoeing can be an individual thing or it can be an event for the whole family. For a good introduction, try Snowshoeing 100 from the fine people at GORP. Then check out GORP’s Tips for Snowshoers. REI helps you pick the correct snowshoe in How to Choose Snowshoes. Backpacker Magazine has a great examination of snowshoes in Snowshoe Anatomy Atlas Snowshoe Company has some good Tips and Tricks for Snowshoeing. We also recommend Your Guide to Snowshoeing from Snowlink. Choosing the Right Snowshoe from Backpacker Magazine has a chart to help you select the right snowshoe. How to Buy Snowshoes is a good article from Oshman’s.

Snowshoeing/X-C Skiing One of the great advantages of Summit County is the almost endless system of trails back into the National Forests. These offer excellent opportunities for escaping the crowds of the ski areas and getting away from it all. Just strap on a pair of Snowshoes, or Cross Country Skis (both are available from the ski rental store in Frisco) and head out on your own adventure into Summit County's backcountry. There are some awesome views on offer as well as many abandoned mining camps and equipment scattered about the region, leftovers from the turn of the century history of the county. Trails are to be found throughout the county, usually with parking lots at the trailheads. Explore wooded glades of Lodgepole Pine and Aspen or traverse open summer meadows and take in the breathtaking scenery that all too many people miss with the headlong dash for the ski slopes. The best part of taking in all this mountain majesty is that its FREE. There are no charges for utilising these trails, the only fees being applicable to the groomed trails of the various Nordic Ski Centers.

Make sure that each new step is sufficiently above the last one to avoid collapse. Descending Try to keep your knees bent slightly, lean back, and keep your weight on your heels in order to maintain control. Heel cleats are the key to an easy descent.
