Our Mission:
To provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Nearly 800 Athletes Showcased Their Skills at the 2003 Winter Games.
"Rain? What Rain?" That phrase was heard again and again as the athletes skied, skated and scored in the soggy Shawangunk Mountains this past weekend in Ellenville. Photos and results! What is Special Olympics?
I have been doing some surfing lately and I have noticed a few errors people make about Special Olympics.
  • Most people misunderstand who is eligible for Special Olympics. In order to be a Special Olympics athlete, you must be mentally handicapped.
    • Having only an emotional handicap (BD, ED, et al) does not make you eligible.
    • Having only a learning disability does not make you eligible. Albert Einstein, even though he was dyslexic, could not have competed.
    • Having only a physical disability does not make you eligible. You will not see Jean Driscoll compete in a traditional Special Olympics competition.
