The Muscletech American Hercules Strongman Championship The Muscletech American Hercules Strongman Championship was held on Sunday, July 2nd, at Kautz Field in Kokomo, Indiana. The meet was sanctioned by the NSAA and served as a National Qualifier for both the American Showdown to be held on July 22nd at Harrah's Casino in St. Louis, and the American Championship to be held this Fall in Las Vegas. The event proceeds went to Big Brother's Big Sisters. The meet started with 24 competitors and was narrowed down to 12 after the first 3 events. Six of the competitors qualified from the Central USA meet the previous day. The other 18 American's were either invited or considered professional and allowed to compete based on their past meet performance. Brian Neese was the head referee. Magnus Ver Magnuson was present and did some refereeing and color comentary. He kept things loose with his great sense of humor and kept the event moving along smoothly. Farmer's Walk The first event of the day was Farmer's Walk for distance. Competitors carried 330 pounds in each hand over a 60 meter (200 foot) course. The implements could not be set down. Phil Pfister and Brian Schoonveld completed the course (their placing was determined by time). This was an absolutely incredible display of grip strength by both. The handles were not knurled and were 1 3/8 inch diameter (provided by MASTIFF Equipment). This was probably the heaviest farmer's walk ever in the US or in Europe.

Les Strongman Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. Born 1924 in Winnipeg Manitoba, Les Strongman is another player of the post-war era who holds a unique place in the history of British ice hockey, and in particular the Nottingham Panthers. Having joined the police force in Winnipeg after three years active service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was facing a winter of beat-walking in temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius, when a chance meeting with an old hockey-playing friend ended up with him becoming one of twelve players from Winnipeg who formed the first Nottingham Panthers team. As an original member of the 1946 team, Les Strongman spent a total of eight years in the black and white uniform in two different spells. He represented them in the English National and British leagues, as well as icing two seasons as a Wembley Lion. In those ten seasons, Les Strongman was three times a championship winner, twice with the Panthers, once with the Lions. Les Strongman was one of the most instantly recognisable players of his day, due in part to him wearing a helmet, before this became a mandatory part of the game. Strongman donned his famous white helmet following a fractured skull injury sustained in 1950. Many people of the time thought it would be career ending, but it was soon reported that “the rangy Winnipeg-born forward made a remarkable recovery and was soon back on the ice.”

Srongman Exercises, Strongman Injuries How to train like Magnus, How not to lift a tire by Thomas Incledon A few weeks ago, we posted an article called From Lab Geek to Strongman by Thomas Incledon. In it, Tom outlined his preparation for his first big strongman contest including his diet, supplementation and training regimen. He fared pretty well for a rookie, coming in 15th out of 27 competitors. Since he greatly increased his strength and added several pounds of muscle, many of you asked for some explanations about the oddball exercises he used to prepare for his competition. In the first half of this article, Tom hooks us up with the details. So if you've ever wanted to learn how to do wall marches or clean holds, read on. In the second half, Tom takes us through every athlete's worst nightmare: a career threatening injury. Those Crazy Exercises In my lifting career, I've trained as a powerlifter, an Olympic weightlifter, and a bodybuilder. Training as a strongman, however, provided its own unique set of challenges. I had to prepare for events that were tough to simulate in the gym. These were "real world" tests of strength and I had to build as much functional strength as possible to tackle them. Even though I used these exercises to prepare for strongman contests, I feel anyone can benefit from them, especially if you're an athlete who must perform in an unpredictable environment, e.g. wrestling, football, etc. Even if your only goal is to look good, I challenge you to throw a few of these exercises into your usual routine for the sake of variety and novelty.
