Worst sports movies ever
Page 2 staff All this week, we've focused on the best that sports movies have to offer the 20 best films , the 10 best actors , the 10 best actresses and the 10 most moving moments "The Fan" wastes the talents of Robert De Niro, left, and Wesley Snipes which is hard to do. Today, however, it's time to scrape the bottom of the barrel. There have been plenty of awful sports films, but only a select few can make Page 2's list of the 10 worst movies of all-time. Check out our list and then vote in the poll at right to finger the worst offender of all-time. 1. "The Fan" (1996)
Is this how it went? ... You were a young screenwriter. Moments before a big pitch meeting with the studio muckety-mucks you had nothing to sell them. Your mind was a blank. You shouldn't have gone out drinking the night before. You scrambled around your windowless jail cell of an office, looking for a scrap, a hint of an idea, when you came across a treatment you wrote as a college freshman. You skimmed over it, and it was brutal clumsy, obvious, totally implausible but it was all you had. So you went to the meeting ready to pitch the sorry idea, figuring maybe, maybe it would buy you some time. You made the pitch, sweat pouring down your forehead, certain you were about to get canned. And then, and you still don't quite understand how or why, they liked it. Heck, they loved it. They talked De Niro. Someone said Snipes. Twenty minutes later the thing was in pre-production. ... That's how it happened, right? And if you could take it all back you would, right?

The Longest Yard
If you're part of a new generation that only knows about the Loni split, the lame toupee and the even lamer Evening Shade , you may not believe this, but Burt Reynolds was once a man. Here, Reynolds plays a former star pro quarterback turned inmate. Once inside, he finds himself under the corrupt lock and key of Eddie Albert 's evil Warden Hazena big football fan who seems to hire his guards based on their football prowess. Of course, Hazen wants a team of prison patsies for his guard squad to beat up on. As the rebellious Reynolds slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates, he's pressured by the warden into organizing team con, whose roster is deeply divided by race and other differences. The warden, however, underestimates Reynolds' ability to rally the troops.
RealVideo
QuickTime Don't Know The resulting game is easily the best football scene ever shotand full of violence, with severely injured cons and screws alike giddily cheering their respective teams as they listen to the game by radio from their hospital beds.

There is crying in sports movies
By Eric Neel
Page 2 columnist There were probably others, but these are the times I remember: "Brian's Song" is the ultimate tearjerker in the sports movie genre. I cried when Rocky lost. I fell apart during a TV movie of the John and Joey Cappelletti story called "Something for Joey." Cried watching the remake of "The Champ." I was 11, and my dad was with me. My parents had been divorced for a few years, and he was in town visiting my sister and me for the weekend. All I really remember is the end of the movie. Billy Flynn (Jon Voight) dies in a fight. He's laying on a table in the locker room and and his son T.J. (Ricky Schroder) is sobbing and calling out to him, "Champ! Champ!" I looked at Billy and T.J., I looked at my Dad in the dark sitting next to me, and maybe I thought about him leaving again soon or about the fact that he would die some day, too, and I lost it. I cried through the credits, and we stayed in our seats after the lights came up for what I think of now as several minutes; me blubbering and shaking, Dad wrapping his arms around me and holding on, steady and soft. I didn't see "Brian's Song" until years after it came out. I watched it with my best friend David, on a 12-inch black-and-white television. I was at his house for a sleepover, it was a late-night broadcast, and we snuck into the kitchen when it was over to get glasses of Hawaiian Punch, tears streaming down our faces.

Syrupy clichés one reason most sports movies are stinkers
All you need to know about sports movies are two things: 1) All of them have the same plot. 2) Most of them are about boxing. The plot, basically described as Rocky's Bad News Hoosiers, is about the lovable loser who triumphs in the end. If there is a love story involved, the champ also gets the girl. If not, there is redemption of some other sort, usually for some old, worn-out person. Boxing predominates because it is cheap and obvious. Hey, is it easier to have two guys fight or 22 of them play football? Boxing also has many "characters" who hold spit buckets and talk colorfully. Once upon a time this might have been justified, but Hollywood hasn't caught on that boxing really appeals to only a small segment of the population nowadays, and so it keeps on turning out boxing movies that get more dreadful, even as the potential audience diminishes.

The Bottom Line Here are some of the best sports movies ever, enjoy!
This is a review of my all time favorite sports movies, I will try to include movies about different sports, and hopefully some that you have never seen. I hope you enjoy the review.
(Victory) The first of my selections is the movie Victory which is the only movie about Soccer on my list, and actually its the only good soccer movie I have ever seen.
This is the story of Allied prisoners of War during World War Two who for a soccer team and challenge the Germans to a match as a plot to escape from the POW camp. The film features Micheal Caine, and Sylvester Stallone, as well as a number of real professional Soccer players including the Great Pele (Brazil) Bobby Moore (England) and Osvaldo Ardiles (Argentina). If you like soccer you will love this movie, and even if you are not a huge soccer fan you should enjoy the inspirational ending.
(Hoosiers) This is my pick for the best serious Basketball movie ever. Gene Hackman stars as a Highschool basketball coach in Indiana, trying to get his team to play his style of ball, while coming in conflict with players, and parents. Great basketball scenes in this one.

Home Sports Movies A League of Their Own

A fictionalized (but reportedly accurate) version of the first year of the All American girls Professional Baseball League. With Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna and Geena Davis as star players, the League is in great hands. When women's baseball comes back, you can bet there won't be "charm school" to go along with spring training! Annie O
When the high school basketball coach sees Annie playing hoops with her two brothers, he's impressed. Since there's no girls' basketball team at Washington High School, he suggests that Annie go out for the boys varsity team. The same one her brother is on. It takes the team a little while to get used to its new member but Annie "Sure shot" Rojas never seems to miss. The movie's a little predictable but it's fun, and the good news is that the next year the school gets a girls varsity team! In the Game
In the Game" documents a year in the life of Stanford's women's basketball team. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the sweat and tears that it took for these women to go from the bottom of the league to the absolute top. Coached by Tara VanDerveer who went on to coach the gold-medal-winning Olympic team, the intensity of these players is exciting and as close as you'll get without being there. Pat and Mike
This 1952 romantic comedy stars Katherine Hepburn as the all-around athlete Pat Pembertona woman who was ahead of her time. Spencer Tracy plays her promoter and manager. Katherine Hepburn performs all the athletic features herself, and the film features legendary pre athletes like Babe Didrickson and Betty Hicks on the golf course, and Alice Marble and Gussie Moran on the tennis courts.

welwyn garden city, uk - Thursday, June 20, 2002 at 13:23:17 (EDT) I think "Quarterback Princess" is the best girl's sports movie because it shows the obstacles women have to overcome in the early eighties. The protagonist is Helen Hunt (I think) and she is awesome and feminine and a kickass quarterback on a highschool male football team. I think it is a true story too. My grandmother was a quarterback too...back in the day!
