Lewis Publishing Movie Store Sports Movies Sports movies often represent the best of the human condition. Frequently dealing with overcoming adversity, they offer inspiration and hope. Many of these films are also available in DVD format.
    A League of Their Own
(1992) Based on the real-life Woman's Baseball League of the 1940's, this is a funny and heart-warming story of a little-know part of Americana. Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnel, and Madonna.
DVD Version The Babe (1992) A poignant, if often unflattering look at the life of Babe Ruth. John Goodman turns in a good performance of the Sultan of Swat. Also starring Kelly McGillis.
    Cobb
(1994) Another stark look at a baseball legend, Ty Cobb. Cobb was notorious on and off the field, and Tommy Lee Jones plays this ascerbic character to the hilt. Also starring Robert Wuhl.
    Eight Men Out
(1988) The story of the infamous Chicago "Black Sox", accused of cheating in the 1919 World Series. Well acted drama. Starring John Cusack, Clifton James.
    Field of Dreams
(1989) A very popular, feel-good film. An Iowa farmer builds a ball field in the middle of his corn field, and they come to play. Oh boy, do they come to play. Starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan.

    The Longest Yard
If you're part of a new generation that only knows about the Loni split, the lame toupee and the even lamer Evening Shade , you may not believe this, but Burt Reynolds was once a man. Here, Reynolds plays a former star pro quarterback turned inmate. Once inside, he finds himself under the corrupt lock and key of Eddie Albert 's evil Warden Hazena big football fan who seems to hire his guards based on their football prowess. Of course, Hazen wants a team of prison patsies for his guard squad to beat up on. As the rebellious Reynolds slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates, he's pressured by the warden into organizing team con, whose roster is deeply divided by race and other differences. The warden, however, underestimates Reynolds' ability to rally the troops. RealVideo QuickTime Don't Know The resulting game is easily the best football scene ever shotand full of violence, with severely injured cons and screws alike giddily cheering their respective teams as they listen to the game by radio from their hospital beds.

    My Fav Sports Movies
If you have looked around my website, you probably noticed that I like sports and movies. Since the beginning of film, movie-makers have used the world of sports as a supplier of stories. Athletics are full of great characters, dramatic moments, great highs and lows, and other elements that work on film. Plus, movies about sports come with a potentially large audience. Of course not all movies about athletics are wonderful works of art. Many have been major stinkeroos. Below are some of my personal favorites. Feel free to drop me a line with comments or suggestions.
    Football
Football should be a great provider of stories for movies. It is the most watched sport in the U.S., and one of the more violent. There have been quite a few football movies, dating back to the silent era and up to today. However my favorite is:
    North Dallas Forty
Based on Peter Gent's (a former pro wide receiver) novel, this film stars Nick Nolte as Phil Elliot, an iconoclastic receiver fighting the powers that be. No other football film has more accurately portrayed the pain pro football players go through, as well as the methods players will use to be able to play (drugs and more drugs). NDF also shines in its depiction of the attitude that the front office (owners, coaches) have towards the players. As Nolte's character puts it, "They're the team, we're the equipment."

Excellent (Must see) Good Average Keep watching ESPN
    Auto Racing
Days of Thunder From the engine roar and fever pitch of professional stock car racing, Days of Thunder explodes with the most spectacular racing action captured on film. Tom Cruise plays race car driver Cole Trickle, whose talent and ambition are surpassed by his burning need to win. Discovered by businessman Tim Daland (Randy Quaid), Cole is teamed with legendary crew chief and car-builder Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall) to race for the Winston Cup at the Daytona 500. A fiery crash nearly ends Cole's career and he must turn to a beautiful doctor (Nicole Kidman) to regain his nerve and the true courage needed to race, to win and to live. Review: This picture features excellent racing footage and will blow the surround sound out of any room. The plot is good but does lag at times. The lag times are made up by great racing action. The film also features several NASCAR racers. If you like racing, its worth a look!
