UNC-Asheville's Andre Smith was named Big South Tournament MVP. The field of 65 will decrease to 64 tonight as the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs take on the Texas Southern Tigers in the NCAA Tournament's opening round game. UNC-Asheville is making its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in any sport in its 17-year history of being a Division I-A institution. Ten days ago, the Bulldogs became the first fifth-seeded team to win the Big South Conference Tournament. They own just a 14-16 overall record, but it is necessary to mention that their non-conference schedule was rated as the 14th toughest in the nation. UNC-Asheville took on Oklahoma, Kansas, UConn, Michigan State, Holy Cross, and East Tennessee during the regular season, all six of which have earned NCAA Tournament bids. Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach has been to the "Big Dance" on several occasions as an assistant coach and once as a player, and he was a part of the 1974 NC State staff that captured the title.
Sixers feel the Heat
The streaking Philadelphia 76ers try to continue their run towards the top of the Atlantic Division this evening, when they head south to take on the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena. Philly owns the best record in the NBA since the All-Star break (14-2), which has helped them pull within one-half game of Atlantic Division-leader New Jersey. The Sixers are also just two games behind Detroit for the lead in the East. The Sixers picked up their biggest victory of the year on Sunday, 92-87, at New Jersey. Philadelphia won the season series with the Nets, 3-1, giving it the advantage if the squads were to finish up in a deadlock.
