Following Kubrick's unfortunate passing, Spielberg, who had prior been collaborating ideas with him concerning "A.I.," decided to make it his next directorial effort, both as a movie that he was passionate and excited about, and as a loving tribute to one of the great masters of the cinema. The end result of the long, arduous, 25-year journey of "A.I." is a science-fiction film filled with endless imagination and wonder; a mature, almost devastating fairy tale; and a thought-provoking rumination on the importance of love, and determined hope, in one's life. The movie is, indeed, a Spielberg production, although it does feature an icy, somehow bleak, emotional core that is certainly Kubrickian in spirit, and undoubtedly intentional. Using the approach of differing styles of moviemaking (with Spielberg more of a wide-eyed optimist) turns out to work extraordinarily well in this film's case, as the picture is deeply touching and effective without being maudlin, and occasionally sterile without coming off as cold-hearted.

Dates: Friday 27 April and Saturday 28 April 2001
Workshop Presentations
Workshop Programme
Programme.
Workshop Background
The application of multiple-valued logic (MVL) to (i) reasoning, and to (ii) learning, represents a slowly-burgeoning area of research work. This workshop aims at significantly strengthening these applications of MVL. We are aiming at enhancing the role of MVL in data mining and in artificial intelligence. A range of speakers will deal with theoretical aspects of MVL, and applications to reasoning (in artificial intelligence) and to learning (in data mining). Clustering and classification are at the core of many of these methods and applications. The opening morning session will consist of tutorials, aimed at PhD research students and young researchers.

75. AI-Trader : Tradingsystems For US Stocks Based On Artificial Intelligence
artificial intelligence trading systems for US stocks. Daily buy / sell overview.
http://www.ai-trader.com
Tradingsystems for many stocks! A tradingsystem gives you a system to trade a stock. To trade a stock means to buy and sell this stock according to the underlying tradingsystem. Many traders use tradingsystems in order to beat the stock market. Using a tradingsystem for a stock doesn't guarantee big profit, but can help to increase the profit without a tradingsystem. Of course, trading stocks with a tradingsystem is no guarantee to make big profits. Tradingsystems based on artificial intelligence bring a new perspective in trading stocks. Artificial intelligence is used at AI-Trader to form a tradingsystem for stocks. Each tradingsystem is unique, whcih means a tradingsystem for stock A is completely different from a tradingsystem for stock B. Now enjoy our fine tradingsystems based on artificial intelligence at AI-Trader!

80. Searle's Chinese Room Argument: Entry
A detailed review by Larry Hauser of Searle's arguments against artificial intelligence. Features an extensively annotated bibliography.
http://host.uniroma3.it/progetti/kant/field/chinese.html
Searle's Chinese
Room Argument Version 2.0
John Searle's ( ) thought experiment and associated ( ) argument is one of the best known and widely credited counters to claims of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e., to claims that computers do or at least can (roughly, someday will) think. According to Searle's original presentation, the argument is based on two truths: brains cause minds , and syntax doesn't suffice for semantics . Its target, Searle dubs "strong AI": "according to strong AI," according to Searle, "the computer is not merely a tool in the study of the mind, rather the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states" ( , p. 417). Searle contrasts "strong AI" to "weak AI". According to weak AI, according to Searle, computers just simulate thought, their seeming understanding isn't real (just as-if) understanding, their seeming calculation as-if calculation, etc.; nevertheless, computer simulation is useful for studying the mind (as for studying the weather and other things).
