    Efficacy of Human Factors
Human Factors is often used interchangeably with User Interface Design or Human-Computer Interface. There is a lot of overlap in these disciplines; however, Human Factors generally refers to hardware design while HCI generally refers to software design. Engineering Psychologist work in both disciplines and the overlap is considered greater than the difference. Optimum Human Factors Design requires a systematic approach to the design process. But, to ensure optimum performance, Usability Testing is required. This empirical testing permits naïve users to provide data about what does work as anticipated and what does not work. Only after the resulting repairs are made can a product be deemed to have a user optimized design. Today all large corporate and military manufacturers team design engineers with Engineering Psychologists to ensure optimum usability. Some of the prime industries relying on Human Factors for design consideration are: High Tech, aircraft, automobile, military, consumer products, and many other companies wanting an edge in the marketplace.

This technology encompasses human machine (hardware ergonomics), human task, (workplace ergonomics) human environment, (human environment ergonomics) and organizational-machine (macro-ergonomics ) interfaces. Practitioners are engaged in developing design specifications, guidelines, methods, and tools. They also apply human-system interface technology to ensure that work systems are compatible with the characteristics of the human who operate, maintain or otherwise interact with them. Their efforts include improving the operability, maintainability, usability, comfort, safety and health characteristics of systems to improve the human and system effectiveness and to reduce the potential of injury and error.

    Human Factors/Ergonomics
Human factors/ergonomics is a broad, long established, internationally recognized scientific discipline and system design profession. Human factors and ergonomics professionals improve safety, comfort, and productivity by developing better operator selection criteria, licensing systems, training, operating procedures, and equipment designs. They do this by taking into account detailed scientific knowledge of human biomechanical, physiological, psychological, and anthropometric characteristics. Knowledge concerning human capabilities and limitations continues to grow as a result of human factors research that has long been supported and/or conducted by the government (e.g., Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, FAA, NASA), industry, and about 65 universities in the United States alone that offer graduate degree programs in human factors and ergonomics. Human factors/ergonomics knowledge is extensively documented in numerous textbooks, scientific journals, design guidelines, and design standards. It has been skillfully applied by human factors and ergonomics practitioners in many practical, real world settings of great diversity, helping people to operate things ranging from hand tools to tractor-trailer rigs to space shuttles more safely and effectively. The principal professional society representing the needs of human factors and ergonomics professionals in the United States is the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of America. The HFES members, representing 47 countries, participate in over 20 technical and professional groups including Forensics, Safety, Consumer Products, Computer Systems, Environmental Design, Industrial Ergonomics, and others. Annual meetings of the HFES include symposia, scientific workshops, panel discussions, and technical paper presentations that are published in the Annual Meeting
