Human Factors and Ergonomics
Human factors is the science devoted to the interaction of people and equipment. In medicine, the objective is to improve human performance and reduce the likelihood of human error and patient injury. Repeated use errors are often blamed exclusively on the user - instead of poor design or instructions - so that the need for human factors has been previously unrecognized until recently by FDA. On November 29, 1999, the National Academy of Sciences issued a report on medical error, "To Err is Human," which includes this stunning fact: In hospitals alone, medical errors of all kinds kill between 44,000 and 98,000 people a year, more than the number killed by highway accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS. It makes good business sense for a company to establish an effective human factors engineering program for their products not only because of the FDAs compliance policies but because it is good for the bottom line.
Our consulant is a Certified Professional Ergonomist and a registered Professional Engineer who has a number of biomedical equipment patents and an extensive list of scientific publications in biomedical research. JASA Consulting has a track record of "designing it right the first time."

Program Focus
Students acquire competence in research methods, the operation of sophisticated analytical equipment, and computer methods for investigating environmental design problems. They may conduct empirical research in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Research laboratories . These facilities are well equipped with computers, "state-of-the-art" analytical instrumentation to measure a variety of indoor environmental conditions, and a video-computer motion analysis system. Students also conduct research in field settings (e.g., workplace, housing, health care settings). They may focus research on issue areas (e.g., lighting, indoor air quality); on user groups (e.g., ergonomic design for the elderly, children, or handicapped); or on developing human factors tools (e.g., developing computer programs or workplace evaluation methods). Interested students may have an opportunity to work on collaborative projects with companies through the university's Industrial Extension Service. Opportunities for summer internships and for international exchanges may be available.

    Human systems
provides customized familiarization and technical training in Human Factors and Ergonomics for managers, project teams and professional groups. Executive Briefings
For the busy executive who wants to know how Human Factors can add value or reduce risks in his or her business, HSI can provide a customized Executive Briefing lasting about two hours. At the end of this, an executive group will understand what Human Factors can do and how it can been applied in different occupational contexts. Drawing on project examples, the presentation reviews how the systematic application of Human Factors within a company can:
    • Play a part to improve health and safety, Make better use of human resources, Make for better procurement decisions, Provide a more effective and less frustrating working environment.
    Professional Familiarization
For professional groups such as industrial engineers and occupational health and safety specialists, or multi-disciplinary teams for engineering, software or product development projects, HSI provides one to two day familiarization courses to explain the role of Human Factors during the development cycle. This familiarization outlines the contribution of Human Factors at different stages in development, and describes methods and guidelines appropriate to the interests of the group.

    About HFES...
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is the principal professional association in the United States that is concerned with the study of human characteristics and capabilities and with the application of that knowledge to the design of products, systems, and environments that people use. Since its formation in 1957, HFES has promoted the discovery and exchange of human factors and ergonomics knowledge, as well as education and training of students and practitioners. HFES, like similar organizations around the world, is a member of the International Ergonomics Association. The student chapter at NC State University has several functions. One is to promote the field of human factors/ergonomics as an active, interesting career choice for students. This is facilitated by membership drives, meetings, and presentations to undergraduate classes. In addition, the student chapter strives to keep members abreast of what is happening in the field, what the latest research
challenges are, and where career opportunities may be found.
