The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) This program offers a series of examinations that allow students to demonstrate knowledge in a wide range of subject areas. There are two types of CLEP examinations: Subject exams are considered equivalent to specific courses at Iowa State. General exams are not considered equivalent to specific courses, but some of the General exams can be used to meet core requirements or elective categories. (Before taking a General examination, be sure to check with the college you plan to enter at Iowa State to find out how the credit can be applied to your degree program.) CLEP exams are administered at many locations throughout the country, and at different times of the year. At Iowa State, CLEP exams are administered throughout the year, Monday through Friday. The CLEP exams administered at Iowa State cost $100 each, and you will need to register one week in advance of the test date. For more information, contact Student Counseling Service , 2nd Floor, Student Services Building, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011, telephone (515) 294-0178. A candidate can earn from three to six credits toward a college degree for each exam taken, depending on the subject.
Students who score in the fortieth percentile or above on the national sophomore norms on one or more of the five General Examinations (English with essay-following departmental review, Humanities, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences-History) may be awarded six semester hours of credit in each area passed. In all cases of credit through CLEP and other sources, a maximum of 30 credit hours may be awarded through examination. Purpose
The Bachelor of Individualized Study (BIS) program at JMU participates in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). The tests are now being administered in the BIS office. CLEP is a national program that offers students credit by computer-based examination. This allows students to have the opportunity to obtain recognition for achievement in specific college courses. BIS students are typically non-traditional students and it is important for them to have access to several mechanisms for earning credit. The following policies determine the awarding of credit based on this program:
  • Credit for the same college-level learning may not be acquired by using two different methods. Duplication of credit in the general and subject examinations is not permitted. If an equivalent course is not offered, CLEP will be accepted as elective credit whenever a similar discipline or department is available at the University. The number of such courses will be A000.

    College Credit for Multiple-Choice Tests?
Jan. 21 Over 4 million people have taken CLEP exams to earn college credit since the program was started in 1967. The College Level Examination Program involves a series of standardized tests, 90 minutes each, which cover material taught in introductory level college courses. It awards credit for what you know, not how you learned it.
CLEP Subject Exams correspond to individual courses; for example, the Introductory Sociology CLEP test awards credit for a Sociology class. Covering 30 different subjects, which range from Mathematics to Natural Sciences to History classes, CLEP tests are often used by people who are trying to earn credit for knowledge they already have, or want to reduce the time needed to complete their degree.
Created by the CollegeBoard, who creates the SAT exam taken by college-bound high school students every year, CLEPs are accepted by over 2,900 colleges and universities for 3 credit hours per exam. What's surprising to many is that even prestigious universities such as Harvard and Cornell accept CLEP. The number of exams accepted for credits varies by college, but many traditional colleges award as much as a year's worth of credit for passing scores on CLEP tests. And nontraditional schools typically allow students to apply CLEP to up to two years.
With testing centers available at local colleges nationwide, the American college community has clearly embraced this concept of earning credit by examination. However, where they fall short is awareness; over 200,000 CLEP exams are administered every year, yet the average American has not heard of the CLEP program.
