Extractions: (carte de visite photos by Chas. Eisenmann) The albino family, the Lucasies were obtained in Holland by Phineas Barnum during a visit to Amsterdam in 1857. He brought them back to America where they became one of his most popular exhibits. Barnum billed them as being of black Madagascan lineage and that their pink eyes stayed wide open while they slept! The Lucasies were managed by long time Barnum employee Dr. Oscar Kohn. Along with other "living curiosites" in Barnum's employ they appeared in his American Museum on Broadway and offered life story pamphlets for sale along with their 15 cent carte de visite photographs such as those above. Extractions: Laura K. Windsor, O.D. The Low Vision Centers of Indiana Albinism is a set of inherited disorders that result from the inability of the body to produce melanin pigment. Melanin is dark pigment that protects our tissues from ultraviolet radiation. The process of forming melanin in the body takes many steps and may be affected by genes on six different chromosomes. Due to the many genetic variations causing this condition many different forms of albinism may occur. The most severe form of albinism presents with little or no pigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes. These individuals present with white/platinum hair, pink skin and often a pinkish eye color. Other forms of albinism may affect only the eyes. These individuals will present with many of the eye and vision problems related to albinism, but have normal skin and hair pigmentation. Effects of Albinism : Patients with albinism have reduced visual acuity primarily from an underdevelopment of the center of the retina. The macula is where the best vision is located and it contains a very sensitive area called the foveal pit. The pit fails to develop in albinism and causes mild to moderate reduction of central vision. Photophobia: The melanin pigment absorbs stray light and protects our eyes and skin from ultraviolet light. This pigment coats most of the internal layer of the eye allowing light to enter only through the pupil, and the pigment in the retina normally absorbs stray light. Failure of the eye to develop pigmentation in albinism results in extreme light sensitivity.

Extractions: Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a genetic metabolic disorder which causes albinism, visual impairment, a platelet dysfunction with prolonged bleeding, and progressive symptoms including pulmonary fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease and kidney disease. The severity of HPS ranges from very mild with few symptoms to severe and disabling. Since HPS is an autosomal recessive disorder, both parents are expected to be carriers of the abnormal gene. The type of albinism in HPS is a tyrosinase-positive form, which means that individuals may present with varied amounts of pigmentation. Some persons may have very light hair and fair features, while others may have dark hair and appear to have ocular albinism. The visual impairment inherent in HPS persons is a result of the lack of pigment during eye development. This results in decreased acuity and frequently to legal blindness, photophobia (light sensitivity), strabismus (crossed eyes), and nystagmus (involuntary movement of the eyes). Platelets are a part of blood which helps clotting. In HPS, the platelets do not function properly. For platelets to work, they must have dense bodies on them, much like chips on a chocolate chip cookie. These chips are filled with chemicals, which when released, cause the platelets to clump and stick together. The platelets of individuals with HPS do not have these dense bodies. Without them, HPS platelets do not work, causing poor clotting or a bleeding tendency.

The main subdivisions of albinism include oculocutaneous, ocular, and albinoidism (absence of pigment in localized areas; the pigment in the skin, hair and eyes is less than normal but does not affect the individual as severely as the oculocutaneous or ocular types). The literature reports as many as 20 variants of oculocutaneous albinism alone. Oculocutaneous as well as ocular albinos exhibit similar ocular and visual dysfunction. The oculocutaneous albino patient manifests reduced acuity, photophobia, strabismus, significant refractive error with astigmatism, transillumination of the iris and globe, nystagmus, blonde fundus with visible choroidal vasculature, and macular hypoplasia. A super-normal EOG and ERG is also present. Transillumination of the iris and globe results from insufficient uveal pigmentation and poor development of the retinal pigment epithelium. This leads to a funduscopic picture of a blond fundus with extensive areas of hypopigmentation and clearly visible underlying choroidal vasculature. The pigment of the RPE acts as a sink for incoming light. When the RPE is underdeveloped, light scatters within the eye, producing the subjective complaint of photophobia.

Det är inte helt korrekt utan det är mycket mer komplext. Syftet med den här sidan är att vare sig du inte vet någonting om albinism, eller kan mycket, ska lära dig något nytt. Dessutom vill jag skapa ett engagemang bland personer med anknytning till albinism, men det ska jag återkomma till senare. Först en generell förklaring av albinism Albinism är "en genetisk betingelse" som innebär att den påverkade individen har ett fel i genen som tillverkar pigment (melanin) i hud, hår och ögon. Det är detta som gör att hud och hår hos en person med albinism är mycket ljust. Även synen påverkas eftersom det behövs pigment i näthinnan och gula fläcken för full syn. Usch, jag har så svårt för att sätta ord på det här. Självfallet kan jag stapla upp en massa medicinska termer, men skulle det säga mer? Läs istället min personliga syn på det hela, där jag ska försöka att sätta ord på det jag själv känner. Den stora skillnaden dem emellan är att personer med OCA saknar pigmenti både hud, hår och ögon medan personer med OA bara saknar det i ögonen. Därefter finns det en rad med undergrupper som är uppdelade efter var i genen det har gått snett. Idag har 60 olika mutationer av tyrosinasgenen blivit identifierade i en person med OCA 1. En typ av mutationer är så kallade "null" (värdelösa) mutationer. De producerar ett inaktivt enzym eller inget alls. Dessa "null"-mutationer leder till att produktionen av tyrosinasenzym inte fungerar. Det blir ett stopp i ledet för tillverkandet av melanin i och med att de två första kritiska omvandlingarna från tyrosin via dopa till dopaquinone inte görs och därför bildas inget pigment. En annan typ kallas "leaky" (läckande) mutationer. I detta fall bildas en liten mängd tyrosinasenzym vars aktivitet bara uppgår till cirka 1 - 10 procent av den normala aktiviteten. En liten mängd melanin bildas alltså. Mängden varierar från minimal till nästan normal mängd hos olika individer

Extractions: The word "albinism" refers to a group of inherited conditions. People with albinism have little or no pigment in their eyes, skin, or hair. They have inherited genes that do not make the usual amounts of a pigment called melanin. One person in 17,000 has some type of albinism. Albinism affects people from all races. Most children with albinism are born to parents who have normal hair and eye color for their ethnic backgrounds. There are two major catagories of albinism. Oculocutaneous (pronounced Ock-you-low-kew-Tain-ee-us) albinism involves the eyes, hair, and skin. Ocular albinism involves primarily the eye. People with ocular albinism may have slight lightening of hair and skin colors as well, compared to other family members. At present researchers have defined 10 different types of oculocutaneous albinism, and five types of ocular albinism, on the basis of their appearance by clinical examination. Newer laboratory research studying DNA has shown that there are numerous types of changes in the genes of those with albinism, including within families. Therefore, it is likely that the current system for naming types of albinism will change as research progresses. The most common types of oculocutaneous albinism are called "ty-negative" and "ty-positive". Persons with ty-neg albinism have no melanin pigmentation, and more difficulty with vision. Those with ty-pos albinism have very slight pigmentation, and generally less severe visual difficulties.

Pigment is the colouring agent in cells, which gives the normal skin, eyes, feathers and hair their typical colour. Instead of the normal colour the skin of a complete albino had a pale, milk-white or pink complexion. The hairs are light blond or yellowish. The eyes are red, for the blood shows through the irises. In principle, albinism occurs in all species. Albino mice and ferrets exist, and less common, albino ravens, elephants and horses. Albino rabbits, pigeons and cats are often kept as pets. Even among insects exist albinos. Albinism occurs most with species that live in caves or in deep sea. On the picture you see a blind crayfish. Human albinos have light blond hair, a pink skin and grey-blue or red eyes. They are lucifugous, because the skin is oversensitive to sunlight. The skin is more sensitive to several disorders than the normal skin.It is peculiar that among races that have more pigment by nature, exist more albinos. The most frequent albinos are met with African negroes and South American Indians.
