Extractions: What is Lewy body disease? This sheet tells you about a condition called Lewy body disease which is a cause of dementia very similar to Alzheimer's disease. It differs both in the precise nature of the symptoms and in the damage that is found in the brain after death. There is no cure or treatment specifically for Lewy body disease. However, other drugs may help with some of the symptoms. Lewy body disease is a dementia which is caused by damage in the brain. It is similar to Alzheimer's disease, but symptoms are typically different on close examination, with different signs found in the brain after death. The cause is unknown. Lewy body disease has relatively recently been accepted as a separate disease in its own right. The disease gets its name because of the deposits which are found in the brain after death (named after the doctor who first wrote about them). Lewy bodies are round deposits which contain damaged nerve cells. They are probably formed as the cells try to protect themselves from attack. It is increasingly important to diagnose such conditions accurately as new drugs are developed which may be more effective in some types of dementia than in others.

Extractions: December, 2002 Download this factsheet Dementia is a broad term for the deterioration of brain function which results in loss of memory, reduced language skills and behavioural and emotional problems. Alzheimers disease is the most common type of dementia it accounts for more than half the estimated 500,000 to 700,000 cases in the UK. Alzheimers disease is rare before the age of 60 but the risk of developing it increases with age. Around a quarter of people over 80 have the disease. When the brain is functioning normally, it exchanges signals from other parts of the body, and other parts of the brain, across the gaps (synapses) between nerve cells. These signals in the form of countless electrical impulses are essential for brain activity such as language and problem solving. They are also involved in controlling motor functions, such as instructing muscles when and how to work. Alzheimers disease is the result of the destruction of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain. These nerve cells cannot be replaced, so a person with Alzheimers disease gets progressively worse as more cells are destroyed.

Extractions: Vascular Dementia Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia, accounting for about 20 per cent of all cases by itself and up to another 20 per cent in combination with Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers disease alone accounts for about 50 per cent. It usually affects people between the ages of 60 and 75 and is slightly more common in men than women. Vascular dementia is a term for dementia associated with problems in the circulation of blood to the brain (cerebrovascular disease). It encompasses a wide range of diseases or disorders, the principal feature of which is loss of intellectual abilities. Unlike with most forms of Alzheimers disease, the cause of vascular dementia is known. If blood vessels in the brain burst (cerebral haemorrhage), if arteries blocked by plaque formation or clots (thrombosis or embolism), or if there is insufficient blood flow to parts of the brain (ischaemia) brain tissue will die. This is often called a stroke. It is thought that about a fifth of people who have strokes will develop problems involving their mental abilities including dementia. The risk factors for vascular dementia are those associated with all forms of stroke, the most significant of which is high blood pressure (hypertension). Brain tissue may also die due to disease in the blood vessels. Following is an overview of types of vascular dementia, causes, diagnosis and progression. However, it is important to note that unlike with most Alzheimers cases, vascular dementia can be very difficult to distinguish from other forms of dementia and many researchers still do not agree on the various types of vascular dementia.

Extractions: STAGES OF ALZHEIMERS: (Caregiver's Guide) For the elderly over age 85, about 47% suffer from Alzheimers and is the commonest reason for someone to be admitted to a nursing home. The disease does not discriminate between races, but it appears to affect more women than men simply for the reason that they tend to live longer. There are three stages to Alzheimer's. In the first stage, lasting two to four years, there are subtle changes- lack of "spark", lack of energy and a zest for life, lack of humor, decreased interest in family life, friends sports and other favorite pastimes. The personality change may become a caricature of the previous personality- the extrovert becomes a bombastic showoff; the introvert becomes reclusive. The first stage shows a loss of short term memory though past memories may remain unaffected. Toward the end of this stage, the person may not be able to hold a job, carry out most daily tasks or organize time and dates. The middle stage may last several years and is characterized by extreme confusion and difficulty in coping with new situation since long term memory fails and is gradually erased from the mind. The patient will still recognize familiar faces and perhaps latch on to one or two in a last grasp to retain some sanity. Many functions must be given up- driving most obviously. The patients may babble since they lose track of not only other conversations, but their own. Wandering and getting lost are frequent. Sundowning, a phenomenon associated with extreme restlessness, agitation and wandering may become a daily occurrence at about four in the afternoon.
