This increased pressure damages the optic nerve causing partial vision loss , with blindness as a possible, eventual outcome. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness in the United States. There are four major types of glaucoma: All four types are characterized by increased pressure within the eyeball, and therefore all of them can cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. Increased pressure occurs when the fluid within the eye (called aqueous humor), which is produced continuously, does not drain properly. The pressure pushes on the junction of the optic nerve and the retina at the back of the eye. This reduces the blood supply to the optic nerve, which carries vision from the eye to the brain. This loss of blood supply causes the individual nerve cells to progressively die. As the optic nerve deteriorates, blind spots develop in the field of vision.

This can result in decreased peripheral vision and, eventually, blindness. Glaucoma is similar to ocular hypertension but with accompanying optic nerve damage and vision loss. Glaucoma affects an estimated 3 million Americans, with 120,000 blind due to the condition. Elsewhere in the world, treatment is less available, and glaucoma ranks as a leading cause of blindness just about everywhere. Even if people with glaucoma do not become blind, vision can be severely impaired. There are two major types of glaucoma, chronic or primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and acute closed-angle glaucoma. There are other variations, such as congenital glaucoma, pigmentary glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

The study, by ophthalmologist Keith Green at the Medical College of Georgia, found the medical benefits of smoking marijuana are slight and relief is temporary. "Glaucoma is a 24-hour-a-day disease, 365 days-a-year disease and you cannot get away from it," he said. The battle over legalizing marijuana for medical purposes has been smoldering for over 30 years. But the issue has been recently fueled by voters in five states Alaska, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Washington who passed laws legalizing the drug to ease the symptoms of certain diseases such as glaucoma, AIDS and cancer. Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is caused by an abnormal increase of fluid pressure in the eye which leads to the gradual loss of vision.
