Julie sues over jabs A mass polio vaccination in Finland (1985) resulted in a higher incidence of Guillain-Barre (GBS) cases in the first two quarters (16 total) compared to a mean incidence of GBS in the population of 3 cases per quarter during a 6 year surveillance period, 1981-1986. Ten of these were diagnosed within 10 weeks after vaccination with OPV. The Vaccine Safety Committee has acknowledged that OPV causes both paralytic polio and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Health officials had convinced the Chinese to rename the bulk of their polio to Guillaine-Barre Syndrome. This went along without a hitch for some time, until a research team suggested giving it a separate name - Chinese Paralytic Syndrome. This prompted an even closer look at the data. A later study (in Hebei province) found that both the new disorder and the Guillaine-Barre Syndrome was really polio. They came to their conclusion by looking at the trends in polio from 1955-90 and noted that, after mass vaccination started in 1971, reports of polio went down but Guillaine-Barre syndrome increased about 10-fold. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is the name given to a rare acute illness of progressive muscle weakness and respiratory paralysis associated with absent reflexes, which develops over a period of three to four weeks, usually following a viral or other infection. Who gets Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Anyone can get Guillain-Barre Syndrome, but it is more common in men and in older individuals, most frequently in those 50 to 74 years of age. How is Guillain-Barre Syndrome spread? Guillain-Barre Syndrome is not spread from person to person, and it is not clearly understood what causes the illness. In about 50 to 60% of cases, there is a recent history of viral or other infection. What are the symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Symptoms vary greatly in severity from so mild that medical attention is not sought, to severe causing almost total paralysis, which may include respiratory failure. The common initial symptoms are numbness and tingling in the legs. Back pain is a major symptom in about one third of patients. The sensory symptoms are soon followed by ascending weakness in the legs and arms. Other nerves, such as those controlling the eyes, are affected in over half the cases. Reflexes are usually absent or greatly reduced. Progression of the symptoms may continue for up to four weeks. Recovery is often slow, lasting 6 months to two years. Up to 90% of patients reach nearly complete recovery.

These symptoms can increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate and is considered a medical emergency. The patient is often put on a respirator to assist with breathing and is watched closely for problems such as an abnormal heart beat, infections, blood clots, and high or low blood pressure. Most patients, however, recover from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, although some continue to have some degree of weakness. Guillain-Barre syndrome can affect anybody. It can strike at any age and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. The syndrome is rare, however, afflicting only about one person in 100,000. Usually Guillain-Barre occurs a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery or vaccinations will trigger the syndrome. The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to 3 to 4 weeks. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest.

It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It can vary greatly in severity from the mildest case that may not even be brought to the doctors' attention, toa devastating illness with almost complete paralysis that brings a patient close to death. Symptoms of GBS include rapid development of weakness. The arms, legs, breathing muscles and face may become paralyzed. A previously healthy person suddenly develops tingling and numbness primarily in the feet which within a couple of weeks spreads through the body to cause loss of muscle control and feeling throughout the body. Around 5% can lose control of their breathing muscles and require machines to keep them breathing. 70% recover completely, even though it may take a few months to a couple of years. However, around 30% will suffer permanent nerve damage. More than 70% of those who suffer Guillain-Barre disease are infected with an intestinal bacteria called Campylobacter and many others are infected with another bacteria called mycoplasma or a virus called cytomegalovirus. There is no consistently effective treatment, but there is some evidence that some people are helped by taking blood fluid from many people called immunoglobulin that contain antibodies that kill bacteria and viruses.
