(The majority of women with breast cancer will never experience lymphedema but some will) What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema is swelling from the lymph fluid that builds up in the body tissues. In other words, the lymph fluid is not completely circulating through the body and builds up in one of the body tissues. The buildup (swelling) usually occurs in the arm or leg. Why Does Lymphedema occur in breast cancer patients? Lymphedema occurs in breast cancer patients because if the breast is removed, surgeons usually remove groups of lymph nodes and vessels from the underarm. Removing lymph vessels and nodes alters the way fluid drains in the body. In breast cancer patients, the lymphatic system struggles to remove fluid from the arm and breasts. How can lymphedema be treated?

The condition occurs when lymph vessels, which normally carry excess fluid out of the limbs and back into central circulation, have had their flow interrupted. Axillary (underarm) lymph node removal is commonly performed on breast cancer patients to stage or treat their cancer. It was founded and organized by Marianne Lynnworth, Dr.rer.nat., who has primary lymphedema and lipedema. The original purpose of the group has been to supply some personal support and information to lymphedema patients. The complaint most frequently heard from new members is the lack of understanding and empathy by members of the medical profession. Lymphedema is a swelling of some area of the body, usually an arm or leg, resulting from an accumulation of lymph fluid. Lymph, the transparent fluid that is collected from body tissues, is normally removed via the lymphatic system. However, in lymphedema the bodys ability to circulate lymph is compromised for some reason. Instead of the usual transport of proteins, fat, water, and cells from the lymph vessels into the circulatory system where they can be utilized or removed, the lymph fluid accumulates and causes swelling and pain in the limb. The lymphocytes, cells of the immune system which are vital in fighting bacteria, cannot circulate normally and the limb becomes more susceptible to infection. What causes Lymphedema? One type of lymphedema, called primary lymphedema, is a condition that a person may have from birth or may develop it in adolescence or even after age 35. Primary lymphedema appears to be due to some physical defect in the lymphatic vessels or nodes. Another type of lymphedema, one more commonly seen in physicians offices, is called secondary lymphedema. Lymphedema of this type occurs after trauma to an area of the lymphatic system, most commonly from surgery which involves removal of or damage to the lymph nodes. It can also occur after radiation treatments of the lymph nodes. Since surgical removal of the lymph nodes and radiation of the lymph nodes is frequently done in breast, uterine, or prostate cancer treatment, lymphedema sometimes occurs after such a procedure.

Lymphedema is a common complication of cancer and cancer treatment and can result in long-term physical, psychological, and social issues for patients. The lymphatic system collects excess fluid and proteins from the body tissues and carries them back to the bloodstream. Proteins and substances too big to move through the walls of veins can be picked up by the lymphatic vessels because they have thinner walls. Edema may occur when there is an increase in the amount of fluid, proteins, and other substances in the body tissues because of problems in the blood capillaries and veins or a blockage in the lymphatic system.
